Ever since I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier I’ve been a major fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, The Avengers was an incredible film that was really the most epic blockbuster of that time but I didn’t like Thor, I liked Iron Man but I hadn’t really seen his movies, and I hadn’t even watched Captain America: The First Avenger. The Avengers was the first Marvel movie that made me start to actually like this interesting band of superheroes but it wasn’t until 2014 that I was sold on the Marvel brand. Not only did The Winter Soldier come out which was already a virtually impeccable film but they introduced me to another group of superheroes (can they really be called superheroes?) whose movie was the definition of a perfect blockbuster. And they were the Guardians of the Galaxy.

When the movie credits were finished and it said The Guardians of the Galaxy will return I was ecstatic. It was thrilling to know this ragtag band of scoundrels, criminals, and an assassin were not going to be a one time occurrence. It was definitely a little disappointing to know it wasn’t going to come back to the movies until 2017 (yay, it’s 2017 now) but I could wait. Now it’s less than three months until the next Guardians of the Galaxy a.k.a GOTG comes to theaters and I have to admit, I’m not as enthusiastic to see it as I was with the first one and I’ll tell you why.

The Story

Okay I would like you to watch this trailer.

Now I’ve watched all of the trailers since the very first teaser and every one does get better than the last. Unfortunately I came away from this final trailer a little disappointed. Yes it’s easily the best trailer so far and yes, it has made me excited for May 5 to come but there is something unfortunate about this preview of the highly anticipated sequel. I can already tell what the movie’s about and the gist of events that will take place in the movie.

Spoiler Alert!

I’m going to speak about a minor spoiler about this film’s connection to an upcoming Marvel film so if you’d rather be surprised I suggest you to not read any further.

Okay…here we go. Yondu, Nebula,  the new character, Mantis and the rest of the more well-known crew will be in Avengers: Infinity War. Yes, they’re all going to be in it. It’s a great surprise that I’m really excited to see unfold in the next Avengers but it’s kind of something I wished hadn’t been announced until after this next GOTG. I love to watch a movie and the entire time not know if everyone’s going to make it out of the situations. Of course I’m not saying I want anyone in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to die but simply knowing that they’re all going to live kind of destroys that suspenseful factor that I enjoy so much in movies.

Secondly I’ve been watching movies since I was a baby. Most movies run on the same plot so there are a lot of times when I can already predict what the movie is about and what’s going to happen in it just by looking at a trailer. Unfortunately I can already tell the story of this new GOTG just from the trailers which is never a good thing.

I believe the main gist of the film will be focused on the GOTG being a family instead of the ragtag team that they were at the end of the first film. I already foresee a sappy moment where the Guardians will come together in the name of saving the galaxy in a touching scene. This is GOTG we’re talking about however so someone will break up the sentimental scene by saying some sort of sarcastic joke (I’m thinking Rocket or Star-Lord will ruin the moment.)

I also predict that Star-Lord’s father is going to die. Why you might ask. Well here’s the thing, there’s going to have to be a dramatic, slightly heartbreaking moment in this film to make it feel really substantial. Look at the first GOTG. They “killed” off Groot to create a moment in the movie that could make you sad and would really solidify the fact that these characters are truly heroes who would risk their own lives to save the galaxy. What better way to create an intense, possibly tear inducing scene than to have Star-Lord’s father die from some unfortunate event. It would really shake up Chris Pratt’s character and it would definitely be the turning point of the blockbuster. And besides, he’s the only main character in the film that’s not been announced to be in the next Avengers.

There is undoubtedly going to be an epic fighting sequence at the end that’ll deliver some sweet visual effects and some mind-boggling combat but, according to the next Avengers, they’re going to beat the villains so that surprise flew out the window. Now of course I can’t predict every little part of the movie but unfortunately those three predictions cover all of the bases. How everything’s going to go down, I have no idea, but I have a feeling I’ll come away from this movie saying to myself, “I knew it.”

The fact that I feel like I already can tell what the movie is about just from the trailers is very disappointing. When I watched the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers I would’ve never guessed that Quicksilver was going to die or that they were going to introduce an amazing new character like Vision. When I watched the Captain America: Civil War trailers I couldn’t tell exactly what the movie was about except for the fact that it seemed like The Avengers were fighting each other. That was great because when I actually watched the film the movie had me on my toes the entire time. And the end was insane. When Captain America dropped his shield my jaw dropped. Was Steve Rogers really no longer Captain America? Even Doctor Strange was filled with surprises that I would’ve never gleaned from the commercials or trailers.

I still am very excited to see this movie and I have no doubt it’s going to be highly enjoyable. Will it be as entertaining as the first one? I don’t think so. That one was complete perfection. Will it be as terrible a sequel as Avengers: Age of Ultron was? Very unlikely. It’ll be a surprise however if this movie could contend with Marvel films like Civil War or Winter Soldier. That would be a tremendous accomplishment.

I hope after I watch it this May it’ll be much better than I predicted. Unfortunately I have to wait nearly three months to find out. Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed and thank you for reading my post. Have a wonderful weekend!
