It’s less than four months until The Last Jedi comes out and this Star Wars film is rumored to have one of the biggest surprises in Star Wars history. The Empire Strikes Back blew everyone away back in 1980 when it was revealed that the terrifying, evil Darth Vader was actually Luke’s father. It’s one of the most iconic moments in film history and really cemented Star Wars’ place amongst cinema glory. Now it’s 37 years later and all I can ask myself is what does The Last Jedi have in store? Will there be a “No, I am your father” moment as well in this film and if so what could it be? Here are five predictions of what I think might be the biggest shocker in The Last Jedi.
1. Kylo Ren Goes Good
Kylo Ren is an evil person, there is no doubt about that. He rests his helmet in the ashes of his victims (creepy), he’s part of a faction bent on the destruction of millions and millions of innocent lives, and he killed his father, Han Solo, in the most brutal way. Yet even after all of that I’m still not entirely convinced that he’s truly evil.
I’ve been watching Star Wars since before I could remember so I can kind of figure out where the characters’ stories are headed without really knowing what’s going on and everything, at this moment, is pointing him in the direction of turning good. Throughout nearly the entire Force Awakens Kylo Ren was conflicted with his inner tug-of-war between the dark side and the light. Even Snoke could sense the battle between the two forces within Kylo Ren. And then when it was time for him to kill Han he almost didn’t. He was on the cusp of actually turning good. Unfortunately, the dark side of the force prevailed and he did end up murdering his father but even once Han Solo was dead it is written in The Force Awakens novel that Kylo Ren didn’t feel stronger after killing him. He instead felt weakened, which explains why Chewbacca was able to shoot him and he didn’t see it coming. And Leia telling Han that there is still light in Kylo Ren is very reminiscent of when Padme, on her deathbed, told Obi-Wan there was still good in Anakin Skywalker a.k.a Darth Vader. And you see how that turned out. Darth Vader ended up, at the end of Return of the Jedi, turning against his master, Emperor Palpatine, to save Luke from being electrocuted to death.
So yeah, I think Kylo Ren turning good is bound to happen. It would also be a great turning point in Star Wars because Jedi have gone to the dark side but you don’t really have that narrative of a Sith turning good. And yeah Darth Vader changed back to the light side but he died shortly thereafter so that doesn’t count. It would be nice to see Kylo Ren convert to the good side and still be alive for a whole other film. That would be pretty awesome.
And to prove my point even further, Adam Driver this week, in an interview to promote his new movie, Logan Lucky, said that there is an “unexpected” development for Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi. I’m seriously thinking this prediction will come true.
2. Rey Turns To The Dark Side
This is another storyline that The Force Awakens has kind of been slyly setting up. Rey is not an evil person, not in the slightest. She’s tough, she’s benevolent, she’s everything an agent of the Dark Side isn’t. Her one flaw, however, is her temper. She is very quick to anger which is a strong attribute of the Sith. Just think about the way she bested Kylo Ren at the end of The Force Awakens. She defeated him off of pure rage, nothing else. And the way she beat him during her interrogation by exploiting his deepest fears, that’s another classic Sith move. If the theories are correct that she might be a descendant of the super evil Emperor Palpatine then that’s, even more, proof of her turning to the dark side.
Now I don’t think her forsaking the pathway to the light will make her into some murderous yellow-eyed Sith like Anakin became before he transitioned into becoming the Darth Vader we know today. I think whatever reasons she’ll have of going to the dark side will be valid. Judging from the way everything is going, I mean even the teaser poster is seemingly trying to say that her destiny is to become part of the dark side. I’ll just have to wait and see.
3. Luke Is A Villain
Wouldn’t it be flabbergasting to find out that after all of these years and all of that suffering he endured throughout the original trilogy Luke ended up turning to the Dark Side? This would be truly groundbreaking and quite baffling, to say the least. It’s already shocking enough to find out that Luke’s fate was to become some old hermit on a remote planet in the far reaches of the galaxy after one of his pupils, his own nephew, Ben Solo, turned evil. If they made Luke evil, now that would be something else.
The lines he said at the end of the teaser for The Last Jedi are ominous enough. I mean come on, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” There are only two reasons he would say that. Either he’s found some ancient text that explains about the flaws of the Jedi and he wants to prevent the possibility of any more future Jedi ruining the galaxy or…he’s turned evil and wants to eliminate the Jedi once and for all. Only one way to find out, I’ve got to watch the movie on December 15th.
4. Rey and Kylo Ren Join Forces
This is something else I can see totally happening and is another little thread that’s been woven from The Force Awakens. I clearly know Rey despises Kylo Ren and Kylo Ren despises Rey, yet I’m still not totally convinced. When they both first met during the Battle of Takodana Kylo Ren seemed interested in Rey. So interested in fact, that when I watched The Force Awakens for the first time over a year and a half ago I thought they were siblings (that theory has since been squashed). Even Rey conveyed some interest towards him despite him being evil. And whereas Kylo Ren could’ve easily finished Rey off at the edge of the cliff on StarKiller Base he tried to persuade her to join his side as an apprentice. And she could’ve finished him off as well but decided not to.
If Rey and Kylo Ren ended up becoming a team it would be an unprecedented moment in Star Wars. Never has the villain and antagonist become a dynamic duo, and Anakin and Palpatine don’t count because Anakin turned to the Dark Side and was Emperor Palpatine’s apprentice. This would be a collaboration between two, equally powerful wielders of the Force, both on opposite sides.
And if Kylo Ren truly heard Han when he told him that Snoke was treating him like a puppet then it wouldn’t be surprising if he did end up leaving the Supreme Leader. And let’s say Rey doesn’t like Luke too much and she doesn’t trust him either. Then it would make perfect sense if they do join forces to save the galaxy. I’m really hoping this happens. 🙂
5. Snoke’s Identity Revealed
And last but not least, Snoke. Snoke is a mystery, simple as that. He’s definitely not Mace Windu, some leaked sketches of the Supreme Leader have debunked that theory. He’s not Gallius Rax from the Star Wars: Aftermath Trilogy. So who is he? I think if this movie even broaches the subject of who he is it’ll be a jaw-dropping, gasp-inducing moment that’s effect will linger on into the next film. Hopefully, it does because I’m tired of trying to the solve the mystery of the mysterious Snoke.
Well, those are my predictions. If you’re wondering why I don’t think Rey’s parentage would be a groundbreaking shocker this is why. Us fans have already theorized about Rey’s parentage to the other side of the galaxy and back. Whoever her parents are will most likely be one of the theories that have already been solved. That means, at this point, it won’t be a surprise to find out who her parents are. It’ll be more of a relief to finally have some clarification on that topic.
So, that’s my reason. I’m hoping at least one of these predictions will be true. I would be thrilled if all of them were correct. Unfortunately, I have 117 days to find out. Until that time I thank you for reading my post and May the Force Be With You.
