Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is coming out in less than three weeks and yesterday I suddenly got a fabulous idea. After getting my latest issue from Entertainment Weekly last week featuring The Last Jedi I decided I wanted to head down memory lane and look at the Entertainment Weekly issue I obtained two years ago featuring The Force Awakens. What was going to be a simple trot into the past ended up turning into a fantastic excavation of all of the magazines I have collected featuring upcoming Star Wars and Marvel movies over the past two years. It was so mind blowing and exciting in fact that I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy!
My Marvel Movie Collection
These issues are all in alphabetical order and date back to December 2015. Can you believe that?! So many Marvel movies have come out in that time. You’ve got first looks at Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. There’s Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor and Black Panther. I mean…it’s just amazing. What was even better about rediscovering all of these covers is the fact that I forgot nearly 75% of these fantastic issues.
I can’t wait until I get my Entertainment Weekly issue featuring a first look at Avengers: Infinity War. That’s going to be a wonderful day.
So out of these eight marvelous covers I broke it down to the four I like the best. Here they are.
These were undoubtedly my favorite covers. I absolutely loved Doctor Strange and so to see this cover featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the caped hero for the first time is kind of amazing.
The second cover here features Spider-Man and this cover totally embodies the fun, childish aspect of the film. Yes, he’s a superhero but at heart he’s just a teenager living his life. He still likes doing activities normal teenagers do. He just happened to get bitten by a radioactive spider and now, well, he’s Spider-Man.
The third cover is pretty much my favorite of the four. I remember when I got this issue for the first time. At that point I knew a Thor movie was coming out but I didn’t know any details about it. When I saw the new and improved Thor with his short hair and swords alongside these two, new powerful women I went a little bonkers for about a day. I was so excited for Thor: Ragnarok at the time and seeing this cover reminds me of that glorious day.
And of course the Black Panther issue is just awesome. The trailers have already assured me that Black Panther’s debut film is going to be one of the best Marvel movies so far and this cover only accentuates that. I’m excited to see what my next Black Panther issue, if there is one, will look like. I know it’s going to be incredible.
So there’s all of my Marvel magazines. Now it’s time to talk about my Star Wars magazines.
My Star Wars Collection
These magazine covers date all the way back to December 2015 and as you can see the first one I obtained was a special Entertainment Weekly issue of The Force Awakens. It’s amazing seeing the timeline and how far Star Wars has come in the last two years. When The Force Awakens was coming out I would’ve never thought about The Last Jedi and where the story is now. It’s truly amazing just looking at the progression.
These are the four covers that I happen to love the most. You’ve got the first one which features Finn on the The Force Awakens issue and it’s just amazing. I still remember when I got this issue for the first time. I didn’t look at the articles because I didn’t want get any insight into the movie but after I watched The Force Awakens for the first time I then read the entire article and I had so much fun doing it. This issue will always have a very, very special place in my heart.
The second cover is simply heartbreaking. I can still recall the shock I felt when Carrie Fisher passed away. It was, and still is, kind of unfathomable. Carrie Fisher had come back and reprised her iconic role as Princess-now-turned General Leia. It was a dream come true. And then she was gone just shortly after last Christmas. I couldn’t believe it. Now that The Last Jedi is coming out I think I still haven’t completely absorbed the fact that she’s gone, especially that she’s in the movie. When I see how they send her off in this film I think it’ll finally resonate with me that she has passed away. She might be gone in the physical world but her spirit will live as long Star Wars is around.
The third cover is for Vanity Fair and it features Carrie Fisher as Leia once again. I love this cover because of its beautiful simplicity. First, it was a special issue of Vanity Fair celebrating Star Wars’ fortieth anniversary and so that was an awesome surprise. Secondly, this was such a good picture of Leia with her new dark brown robe. She looks positively regal on this cover. And third, it was just a very, very exciting article to read. At that time the only official news I knew about The Last Jedi was the teaser so you can imagine my excitement when this article came out.
And my final favorite cover of course belongs to none other but the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly featuring The Last Jedi. When I got this last week I was not only ecstatic to read the article within the magazine’s glorious pages but this cover was just too awesome. In fact, it’s my favorite Star Wars cover so far because it implies so many different things. I mean, two years ago I would’ve never imagined Kylo Ren and Rey standing on a cover together as if they’re allies. That’s mind-boggling to say the least. And if it’s true then that means at least one of my predictions will have actually come to pass. That’s so exciting!
Well, these are sixteen fantastic magazine covers that I’ve managed to accumulate over the past two years. By this time next year who knows what new covers I will have obtained by then. I can’t wait to find out.
I thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed. Have an absolutely marvelous day.
