‘Justice League’ vs. ‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Which One Wins?

I recently watched Justice League and, surprisingly, I enjoyed it immensely. The story was easy to follow, the action was epic, and it was a great way to bring the six superheroes together. Now that I’ve seen both Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League I am going to determine which movie I enjoyed the most. Enjoy!

The Characters

The Justice League

When you bring together incredible heroes such as Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman etc. it’s always going to be amazing and Justice League wasn’t an exception. The characters, while they were great, a few were a little less awesome than others, mainly Aquaman. When The Avengers came out in 2012 nearly every superhero had their own debut film, except for Black Widow and Hawkeye but they were co-stars of those other movies. Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman are the only characters in this team who have had their own movie. That means it’s always going to be kind of hard to introduce three new characters in the span of only two hours while trying to keep track on one story line about preventing the end of the world. I’m frankly surprised the new characters were developed as well as they were.

Thor and Co.

While “The Revengers” clearly aren’t as epic as the likes of the Justice League I happened to really like these characters. Thor, after Thor: Ragnarok, has become one of my favorite Avengers because he finally was given the chance to shine with his comedic personality. The Hulk is just…The Hulk. You can’t really do anything with him except make him a giant green rage monster, who can talk, and that’s what makes him great. Valkyrie has become my favorite female hero in Marvel because she’s just that awesome. And Loki, surprisingly, was very lovable in this movie. He wasn’t being the jerk that he normally is. I mean, he kind of was, but it was nice to see him on the side of the good guys this time around.

All in all, I loved Wonder Woman and Cyborg in Justice League but everyone else was okay. When I came away from Thor: Ragnarok I loved every single character equally and I can’t wait to see them all again.

Thor: Ragnarok: 1 point

The Story

This category clearly has a winner. While Thor: Ragnarok’s story definitely felt a little scattered at times I felt it was more enjoyable than Justice League’s. Now there wasn’t anything particularly wrong with Justice League’s plot. It was just very simple and predictable. And so was Thor: Ragnarok but what Thor: Ragnarok had that Justice League didn’t was humor. Taika Waititi took what we thought we knew about these characters that we had been watching for years and completely turned them upside down and changed them for the better. I loved that and it made the movie a blast to watch.

Thor: Ragnarok: 2 points

The Action

This is another category with a clear winner. The Justice League is a team of legendary heroes. Of course the action is going to be amazing! Thor: Ragnarok had some fun action scenes but nothing on the level of the Justice League. Like I said before, this category had a clear winner.

Thor: Ragnarok: 2 points   Justice League: 1 point

The Music

Justice League

I was frankly surprised at how lackluster the music was for Justice League. One of the reasons why I was one of the few people who actually enjoyed Batman vs. Superman is because of the music. There were actually some amazing themes in that film. Wonder Woman and Man of Steel also had some nice musical themes that made those movies that much more enjoyable. Justice League didn’t have any fantastic music whatsoever and that was unfortunate.

Thor: Ragnarok

Now Thor: Ragnarok had some great music. I remember watching the beginning of the film when Thor was fighting all of those fire demons with Led Zeppelin playing the entire time. I was watching that scene with a broad smile on my face, that’s how fantastic of a part it was.

This category once again has a clear winner.

Thor: Ragnarok: 3 points   Justice League: 1 point

The Cinematography

Justice League

There wasn’t anything very special about the cinematography in this film. The shots were pretty direct, the look of the film was decent, and it overall was what you would expect of a DC film. The colors were bold, which I did enjoy, but that was the only thing that made this movie stand out aesthetically.

Thor: Ragnarok

Most Marvel films don’t have great cinematography or color but Thor: Ragnarok was an exception. There is this one part in the film when it shows Loki and Valkyrie going to talk to The Grandmaster. I remember the camera following them walking by showing their upside down reflections on the polished surface of the floor. It was an interesting shot and I loved it. This is the camera shot that stuck out to me in the movie and it gives Thor: Ragnarok yet another win for another category.

Thor: Ragnarok: 4 points    Justice League: 1 point

And the clear winner goes to Thor: Ragnarok!

While I did enjoy Justice League Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is still undoubtedly the better of the two superhero flicks. I wish I could say otherwise but Marvel has got the formula and they are rolling with it.

I thank you for reading this post and I hope you have a glorious day.

  1. I agree! Thor Ragnarok was AWESOME! I like all of the Thor (and pretty much any Marvel movie. If you asked me which one I liked better, DC or Marvel, I would say “Marvel, hands down”) movies but I think I liked Ragnarok the most…. Maybe I should re-watch the first two again to see which one I like best… 🙂
