Is the Romance in ‘The Last Jedi’ Worthy?

Star Wars is a fantastic franchise for many, many reasons but it also bodes one of the greatest love stories ever to be in a sci-fi film. The story of Han Solo and Leia is one of the greatest romances I’ve ever seen in a movie and it really set the bar for love stories in Star Wars.

And then you had the prequel trilogy which is basically wrapped around the tragic love story of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. While their love story isn’t one of my favorites it is very central to the overall story of how everything came to be in Star Wars.

Now we have a new trilogy and the aspect of romance has finally been legitimately introduced in Disney’s third Star Wars installment, The Last Jedi. Now in the previous two films there were hints of romance. In The Force Awakens it is established throughout the movie that Finn and Rey’s affection for each other is slightly beyond the realm of mere friendship. And then in Rogue One Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor end up realizing they love each other just moments before their demise. The Last Jedi is the first recent Star Wars film to feature a legitimate romance and I’m glad about it. That’s a very important aspect of these new Star Wars movies that hadn’t been broached yet and I’m glad it has. The question is, was the romantic aspect of The Last Jedi a plus for the movie or an unwanted distraction?

SPOILER ALERT! I’m going to talk about some of the movie’s scenarios in great detail and so if you haven’t watched The Last Jedi yet and you don’t want to know what happened in the film I advise you to discontinue reading this now. Okay, thanks for observing this warning and I hope you enjoy.

Finn and Rose

Okay, I like the dynamic between Finn and Rose. They’re a cute duo and for the most part they are perfect for each other but I wouldn’t say I like them as a romantic couple. From the first moment they come together there is that cooperative energy between them and I appreciate their friendly bond. As the movie progresses and Finn gets to know a little more about Rose you can clearly see his affection for her growing and that’s okay but did she have to kiss him?

I get it. Rose liked Finn a lot and so in that moment on the Crait battlefield she decided to take a chance and kiss him but did their relationship warrant that? They knew each other for what, a day at most, and she’s already kissing him? That isn’t entirely realistic. Han and Leia had known each other for years before they kissed for the first time. Anakin and Padme had also been in each other’s company for a little while before they took that romantic turn. And then you’ve got Finn and Rose who’ve known each other for only a little bit but they’re already smooching!

Now, granted, Finn didn’t exactly kiss her back. In fact, he was more shocked than anything that this girl liked him so much. She completely caught him off guard when she landed her little kiss on him and that’s okay. I’m just hoping that J.J Abrams takes their relationship back into just-friends status and makes that kiss on Crait an awkward circumstance because I really want Finn and Rey to get together.

When Finn and Rey hug at the end of the movie I get so emotional because they’re so sweet together. Finn and Rey were a team for nearly an entire movie and seeing them reunite is one of my favorite moments in the film. I’m hoping that in Episode IX they finally just confess their feelings for each other and get together because they’ve been teasing us for two movies straight and I’m tired of waiting for them to become an official couple.

Kylo Ren and Rey

Okay, now let’s talk about Kylo Ren and Rey. I would’ve never imagined I would be writing a post talking about a romantic relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey but thanks to The Last Jedi it is happening and I can’t believe it. This was a very surprising development. At the end of The Force Awakens they seemed to be mortal enemies and then you’ve got this movie and they’re literally touching hands in a surprisingly intimate moment! That is insane! I love it when Luke busts in on them. In that hut they looked like two teenagers who have been caught about to kiss.

When I watched The Last Jedi for the second time I realized just how much affection they were feeling for each other in that movie. Especially Kylo Ren. For so long he has felt like his only ally was Supreme Leader Snoke and then Rey comes along and he clearly began to fall in love with her. He really, really wanted her to join him because, well, he loved her and he frankly couldn’t be without her. Even at the end of the movie when he sees her in their last Force connection his eyes are pleading for her to come with him. Of course she doesn’t but at least he tried.

And Rey was totally crushing on him. I mean she literally fought Luke over him. It’s very hilarious seeing their interactions in the film but moving forward I don’t know where they stand exactly. It seems like they’re enemies again but can I really believe that?

I will say, I liked the romantic dynamic between Kylo Ren and Rey. It was the first time in a Star Wars movie that two powerful Force wielders had a slight romantic relationship and it was very interesting to witness. If Kylo Ren and Rey ended up becoming this trilogy’s next major couple I would be very surprised but I would be pleased because that’s never happened before in a Star Wars film.

Well, this is how I feel about the romance in The Last Jedi. I liked the romantic plots Rian Johnson came up with in the movie (mainly the scenes with Kylo Ren and Rey) but I do hope that Finn and Rey end up finally getting together in the final installment in this trilogy. And please J.J Abrams, don’t make Rey and Poe a couple. *shudder* I wouldn’t like that at all.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Force Be With You.
