Star Wars has been full of stunning and jaw dropping revelations throughout its now nine films. From the iconic “No, I am your father” moment in The Empire Strikes Back to Kylo Ren murdering his father, Han Solo in The Force Awakens the shockers continue coming and The Last Jedi does not disappoint continuing this trend. So, I’m going to discuss the five moments in the film that shocked me the most.
SPOILER ALERT! I am going to talk about some of the most important events of the movie and if you haven’t seen it yet and you don’t want to know the juicy details of this film I advise you to discontinue reading this now. Okay, thanks for heeding my warning. Enjoy the post!
5. Discovering Admiral Ackbar’s Death
It happened so quick if you weren’t paying attention you would have missed it. What I am talking about exactly? The announcement that Admiral Ackbar had been killed of course! I couldn’t believe it! I was already still traumatized from that near horrendous death Leia almost suffered by getting blown out of the ship’s bridge. Then to find out that Admiral Ackbar was one of the unfortunate victims who was also on that bridge was slightly devastating.
Ever since Return of the Jedi Admiral Ackbar has had a tiny special place in my heart. Most people know him because of his “It’s a trap!” statement but I liked Ackbar simply because he was such a strange-looking alien. When they brought Ackbar back in The Force Awakens it was an exciting moment. His voice was older but it was still Ackbar and it was nice seeing that he had survived the thirty year gap between Episode VI and Episode VII.
Now we jump a little bit forward to The Last Jedi and this iconic Star Wars character is gone! I’m utterly dumbfounded. And the way they killed him too. It was so violent seeing all of those people getting sucked into space. I’m convinced Rian Johnson didn’t like Ackbar very much because of the way he handled the admiral’s death but it is what it is and it’ll go down as undoubtedly one of the most shocking moments in the movie to me.
4. The Explanation for Kylo Ren’s Turn to the Dark Side
One of the most nagging questions The Force Awakens presented was how did Kylo Ren exactly turn to the dark side? I knew Snoke had twisted his mind until the point where he had converted to the other side of the Force and I knew he had destroyed Luke’s Jedi academy but there was no exact answer on how he turned to the dark side. And there still isn’t a complete answer but a piece has been added to the puzzle thanks to The Last Jedi.
I remember watching The Last Jedi for the first time and finding out Luke was going to kill Ben Solo. I was utterly stunned. What would make Luke perform such a crude mistake? He’s the legendary Jedi master, Luke Skywalker! Would Luke really make a choice that harsh?
This is the genius of Rian Johnson’s storytelling. The story of Ben’s fall to the dark side was told in three different versions. Luke’s version, Kylo’s version, and finally the last version was the truth. In doing this he showed us every aspect of that defining moment and let us determine our opinion on the remorseful situation.
I frankly understand Ben Solo. If I was dead asleep and I woke up with my uncle wielding a lightsaber over me as if he wanted to kill me I would’ve done the exact same thing.
But I understand Luke too. In his mind he was about to save the galaxy from a world of pain but when he thought to himself, “What am I doing? This is my nephew,” it was too late. He didn’t have the foresight to know that he was that final piece in the puzzle that was going to convert Kylo Ren to the dark side.
It was a devastating mistake and one that is still having its consequences. Will Kylo Ren ever turn back to the light side? It’s seeming less and less likely but if he does it’ll be one of the most powerful moments in Star Wars.
3. Shirtless Kylo Ren
Dang, Kylo Ren’s been working out! Before you ask let me explain what I’m talking about. Rey and Kylo Ren throughout the movie had this Force-connection that allowed them to literally see and talk to each other and one of these moments involved a half-naked Kylo Ren! Yes, I said it. This movie involves Kylo Ren with his shirt off.
Now, two years ago, the very prospect of Kylo Ren without a shirt was the last thing I wanted to see. Now it’s two years later and I have seen Kylo Ren shirtless and surprisingly it wasn’t the most horrendous sight of the movie. In fact, I was stunned. Kylo Ren was ripped. I mean absolute muscle, no fat. What?! Before I watched the movie I knew he looked broader than he did in The Force Awakens but I was not expecting what ended up happening in this film.
Not only was it one of the funniest moments in the film as Rey asked him to put something on but it was also an interesting homage to Anakin Skywalker. Up to this point Anakin has been the only one (besides Luke in a bacta tank but that doesn’t count) to have a shirtless scene and it’s only fitting that his grandson continue that trend of the Skywalkers. Kylo Ren looks much, much better though. 🙂
2. Snoke’s Surprising Demise
Snoke was clearly the biggest mystery coming out of The Force Awakens. His role in that movie was miniscule and you only saw him as a giant shadowed hologram. I thought The Last Jedi would slightly answer the question of who he is and instead they literally cut him out of the movie! It was a jaw dropping moment that I would’ve never guessed in a million years. Here I was thinking that Snoke was going to get this huge role leading into Episode IX and now he’s dead!
Now I applaud this choice for a few reasons. First, Snoke truly was too much like Emperor Palpatine. There wasn’t anything particularly unique about his character in the slightest which isn’t fun for the movie. I mean who wants to watch basically Palpatine’s twin for an entire film.
Secondly, now Kylo Ren is the Supreme Leader of the First Order. That is a very, very awesome development and one that I’m excited to see moving forward. And him as Supreme Leader means that his Knights of Ren are undoubtedly going to make an appearance in Episode IX which is even more exciting. Can’t you imagine Kylo Ren and his version of Praetorian Guards being the Knights of Ren? That is going to be incredible.
Yes, we’ll never know who Snoke is until they possibly write a book about him or make a Star Wars story concerning him but I’m truly glad he’s gone because he was just a distraction that was barring the true evolution of Kylo Ren.
1. Luke Was A Mirage!/Luke’s Death
Okay, the last forty or so minutes of The Last Jedi bring some really epic and intense moments and no other scene in the movie is more epic than the Kylo Ren/Luke showdown. I remember when I watched the film for the first time. I was scared to death. One thing about Kylo Ren is he’s scary because he will kill an important character like Han Solo. I did not want Luke to be his next victim.
When Luke turned off his lightsaber and stood his ground like Obi-Wan Kenobi I was so upset. Luke was about to die and I was not happy about it. And then when Kylo Ren cut through him, turned around, and saw him still standing there I was flabbergasted. And then when he walked forward, put that lightsaber through him, and the blade went straight through him I remember clapping with awed joy. It was incredible! Luke had been a mirage the entire time! How epic is that?! Luke was truly the greatest Jedi I had ever seen and it was the greatest lesson he could’ve ever taught Kylo Ren.
Then afterwards he died! I couldn’t believe it! He had just performed the coolest trick a Jedi had ever made and then died a few minutes later. That’s terrible but I guess it was realistic. He was tired, he was at peace, and he was ready to be one with the Force. I’m still wondering just exactly how he died though. Was it so taxing making that mirage that he died of exhaustion or is he the first character to willingly just meld with the Force? I don’t know but maybe The Last Jedi book will clarify that detail.
Well, these are the five moments that shocked me the most in The Last Jedi. I thank you for reading my post and I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Force Be With You.
