It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air. I’m a fan of, well, love. It’s a beautiful thing and one of my favorite aspects in a movie. If a film can convey a perfect plot while also illustrating a tear-inducing love story at the same time I always give the movie extra points. So, to celebrate this gloriously romantic day I’m going to share with you the five movie love stories that have always made my heart pang with happy and sometimes heartbreaking emotions. Enjoy!
5. Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean
I knew about the Pirates of the Caribbean movies for a long time but it took me until several years ago to finally see the films and I was pleasantly surprised. Each movie was highly enjoyable, the action was great, the story was engaging, and it featured quite a stirring romance between pirate, Will Turner, and the gorgeous governor’s daughter/future pirate, Elizabeth Swann. Their relationship was filled with leering glances, butterfly-inducing encounters, and plenty of smooching. While their relationship was a little rocky at times due to Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow butting in every now and then they eventually got married (in the midst of a raging battle I might add!) and then moments later Will got killed! I was stunned and mortified at the same time.
Fast forward several minutes, Will was brought back to life, becoming basically the Hades of the Sea, and because of this he had to rule the domain of the dead while he left Elizabeth behind in the mortal world. I have to say, I cried like a baby when he had to say goodbye to her. It was such a saddening ending for the two and after seeing the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies in a matter of well, three days, it was especially hard to see.
Thanks to last year’s latest installment in the continuing franchise they ended up having a happy ending after all. 🙂
4. Frank (Josh Brolin) and Adele (Kate Winslet) Movie: Labor Day
One of the best movies I have ever watched is Labor Day. It’s a beautifully told story of a single mother and her son who take in a wounded convict for the span of the Labor Day weekend. The heartwarming love story between the convict and single mother is so gorgeously woven that when you realize that they fell in love in only a matter of days it’s kind of stunning. So many things happened in that span of time that it felt like they were together for weeks. Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin also did a magnificent job as well. Their chemistry was magnetic, their acting was impeccable, and it was the first time I had seen either of them in a film and I’m glad I was introduced to both of these amazing actors in this stunning film.
This movie will make you laugh, it’ll make you weep like a baby, basically, your emotions will be all over the place, but in a good way. If you’re enjoying a splendid evening with the person you love and you want to watch a good romantic flick this is the one to watch. You won’t be disappointed.
3. Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) Movie: Star Wars
I always say it. The love story of Han and Leia is one of the greatest love stories to be told in science fiction movie history because it is. Their relationship definitely wasn’t smooth sailing but it was heartfelt and left you on the edge of your seat as you wondered what was going to happen. It all led to a supposedly happy ending, however, as the two ended up getting married and having a child. Unfortunately, we know what transpired later in their life together.
I would’ve never imagined that after thirty years they wouldn’t be together anymore, especially under the terrible circumstances that split them apart, their son turning to the Dark Side, but it was realistic and it was an interesting development in their decade spanning story. The beautiful thing was, however, even after all of those years and the heartbreak that fractured their marriage they still loved each other and that’s why their love story is one of my favorites.
2. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) and Taka (Koyuki) Movie: The Last Samurai
Oh my gosh, this movie, I’m getting emotional just looking at this picture. The Last Samurai is one of the most beautiful films I have ever watched, storywise, visually, and the score composed by Hans Zimmer, the genius behind the musical scores of Interstellar, Dunkirk, Gladiator, and The Dark Knight, is just magnificent. I’m telling you, this movie is so good it’s easily in my top five, maybe even top three favorite movies of all time.
I’ve seen this movie three times and every time I watch it I cry harder and harder during the last twenty-thirty minutes of the film. It’s that emotional of a movie. But beyond just the impeccable storytelling of the film the love story between Nathan Algren and the beautiful Taka is utterly gorgeous to watch. It’s not an immediate attraction between the two. I mean Nathan was obviously stunned by this beautiful woman taking care of him but their relationship at first is very icy and distant. Then as Nathan becomes closer and closer to the people of the village he’s been forced to reside in as prisoner to the Samurai she begins to let him into her life and into her heart.
By the last quarter of the movie the two have fallen in love and it’s simply beautiful. Like I said before, this movie makes me cry so hard, and the love story aspect of the film doesn’t help matters whatsoever.
If you haven’t seen this movie before I highly recommend that you do. It’s my favorite performance by Tom Cruise, the movie is gorgeously written and directed, the actors are beautifully outstanding, and it’s just really, really good. It’s definitely worth the watch. But be warned, you’ll need lots of tissues at hand.
1. Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and Murph (Mackenzie Foy/Jessica Chastain) Movie: Interstellar
This is my favorite love story I’ve seen in a movie because it’s so beautifully told. There are countless films that focus on the love stories between men and women or same-sex couples but rarely do you see stories told that focus on the loving relationship between a father and daughter and Interstellar is one of them.
Cooper absolutely loved his daughter, Murph, and his love for her set him on the mission to go save the world with a group of other NASA individuals. It was amazing because even across galaxies his love for his daughter allowed him to contact her as an adult which then led her to be able to save the people on Earth.
This is easily in my top three list when it comes to movies and it’s yet another film that makes waterfalls pour from my eyes, even after having seen it over a dozen times. The love between a father and daughter is a beautiful thing to see and this movie highlighted that immensely.
Well, these are my favorite love stories told through cinema. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a gorgeous day.
