The 14 Coolest Additions to ‘Star Wars’ in the Last Three Years

With Disney’s acquiring of LucasFilm in 2012 there have been three Star Wars movies, dozens of books, two Star Wars games (which are terrible the way,) a new Star Wars cartoon, and there’s much more Star Wars to come which I’m beyond excited about. So, yesterday as I was participating in my daily activities I thought to myself of all the latest Star Wars movies and all of the incredibly cool, new additions to the Star Wars universe that have come in the past three years and so I’m here to share them with you. Enjoy!

1. Porgs

I have to admit, I love porgs. When I first saw them I was seriously hoping that they wouldn’t be another version of Ewoks but, thankfully, they’re not. They’re actually really adorable. I immediately knew I was going to love these cute creatures when it showed them toying with Luke’s lightsaber after Luke chucked it. They were SOOO cute…and funny. I wasn’t sure if I was going to jump on the Porg bandwagon or not but yeah, I’m a Porg fan.

2. Canto Bight

Canto Bight

Canto Bight is an interesting place. A lot of people didn’t like the Canto Bight sequence of The Last Jedi but I, for one, loved it and part of the reason why I enjoyed it so much was because the city was so gorgeous. One of the few things I liked about the prequels was that it didn’t shrug away from showing the niceties of the galaxy. You had Coruscant, a fascinating metropolis where wealthy people, politicians, and so forth enjoyed the different amenities of the planet. Then there was Naboo, a gorgeous world that, if real, I would want to live there because of its extreme beauty. For the past two Star Wars movies, however, there hasn’t been a world or a people that are remotely fancy in the slightest. The Last Jedi changed that by introducing Canto Bight which is, essentially, a giant casino.

I loved looking at all of the nicely dressed aliens and humans and even the policemen were really cool. I’m glad this beautiful world is now part of the Star Wars universe and I hope more fascinating worlds like this appear in the future.

3. BB-8

I can’t imagine Star Wars without BB-8. He has become the face, or droid, of Star Wars in merchandise. If it’s not Kylo Ren’s mask BB-8 is the one you see on a toy box or a can of soup. BB-8 has made R2-D2 look ancient and that’s saying something. Besides, he’s my favorite droid in Star Wars, at least for now, because he’s just so darn cute. Now, unfortunately, in The Last Jedi his awesomeness was diminished a little and he kind of was made into a joke, a development I found slightly offensive. I mean BB-8 was great in The Force Awakens, it’s why he became my favorite droid, but then they turned him into comic relief in The Last Jedi which was very unfortunate to see. I still love him though.

(Hopefully J.J Abrams will make him cool again.)

4. Tie Strikers

TIE striker

Rogue One introduced a lot of incredible creations to the Star Wars universe and the Tie Striker is totally one of them. This ship is so cool it’s kind of upsetting that its only appearance is in Rogue One because it’s that amazing. I loved that it still feels vintage while retaining that modern look. That’s the great thing about Star Wars. Everything is designed to look like it belongs in the Star Wars universe so even when you have newer models of old ships it still feels like it could be a part of the Original trilogy. That’s pretty cool.

5. Captain Phasma

Captain Phasma's Baton

Even though she wasn’t given the spotlight that she deserved in either film that she appeared in she is still one of my favorite Star Wars characters because she’s simply that amazing. To think that there was a time when a character like Phasma wasn’t around is sad to think about. She might not have been given as large a role as Hux or even newcomers like Holdo and Rose but her impact on the movies was special and I’m glad she has become part of the Star Wars universe. (Hopefully she actually didn’t die and she’ll return even angrier.) 🙂

6. Ach-To

Ach-To is a beautiful planet imbued with the Force and covered in Porg nests (hee-hee.) I love this place. When I saw Ach-To for the first time in The Force Awakens my expression mirrored Rey’s when she also saw the planet for the first time; I stared in utter awe. I had never seen a world like Ach-To before in Star Wars which is always a plus and it’s where Luke had placed himself in exile. AWESOME!

The Last Jedi, of course, gave me a better look at the planet and it was even more fascinating seeing all of the different areas and the weather conditions of the planet. One of my favorite Ach-To scenes is when Rey is following Luke around and as they both climb this ridiculously steep hill the wind is just out of this world. That part was utterly amazing in IMAX and it helped make Ach-To one of my favorite planets.

7. Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber

Kylo Ren's Lightsaber

I remember when I saw this lightsaber for the first time in that incredible teaser in November of 2014. I practically lost it. Before Kylo Ren the only interesting lightsaber was Darth Maul’s double-bladed one. Then here we have Kylo Ren with a lightsaber that looked like a sword?! I was done. Star Wars was back and they weren’t playing!

Now, after three years, this is still one of the best lightsabers ever. Why do they always have to make the villains so cool? I mean Kylo Ren is awesome enough as it is and then you have to give him an epic sword lightsaber? Double cool. I love Kylo Ren. 🙂

8. Scarif

I love new locations in Star Wars movies and Scarif was downright amazing. When I think of Imperial Bases what immediately comes to mind is the Death Star, Star Destroyers, dark, gloomy places like Eadu, but I never imagined there would be an Imperial Base on a world as gorgeous as Scarif. It was a shock to me. The Empire and sunny beaches doesn’t exactly sound like something you’d say in the same sentence but it is and that’s part of the reason why I love Rogue One so much.

9. Rey

To imagine Star Wars without Rey is sad indeed because she’s so awesome. At one time the thought of a major female Jedi was a dream and now it seems weird if there isn’t one. She has set the grounds for many more awesome Jedi women hopefully in the future and I’m so glad she’s part of the Star Wars universe.

10. K-2SO

K-2SO (Kay-Tuesso)

You have C-3PO and then you have K-2SO. K-2SO is undoubtedly one of the coolest droids ever to appear in Star Wars. First of all, he’s a reprogrammed Imperial droid which provides him an interesting back story. Secondly, he’s the tallest droid I’ve seen. Third, he’s very blunt. C-3PO was comic relief and while K-2SO provided much of the laughs in the movie I can’t regard him as a funny robot, making him the perfect droid for Rogue One. I mean the overall tone of the Star Wars Story is very serious. It would’ve been weird if there had been a humorous droid in the middle of all of those dire situations.

Even though K-2SO was only in one movie he left a huge impact on the Star Wars universe with his awesomeness.

11. The Mirror Cave

Ahch-To Mirror Cave

One of the most visually fascinating scenes in The Last Jedi was when Rey went down into the mirror cave. That scene was Star Wars gold. I love cool things in Star Wars and this mirror cave is hands down amazing. Both of the times I watched The Last Jedi this scene captivated me. It also freaked me out a little bit but that’s just me. It was one of the few points in the film that actually felt dark, from a tone standpoint and literally from a visual standpoint.

This is definitely one of the most eye-catching scenes there has ever been Star Wars and I hope there will be more scenes like this in the future.

12. Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren is AWESOME, pure and simple. Ever since he walked down the ramp of his shuttle at the beginning of The Force Awakens I was an instant fan. Before Disney bought LucasFilm there was this game, Knights of the Old Republic, and it had the most epic game trailers you could ever see. In fact they were so great I would watch them over and over again with the wish that one day there would be new Star Wars movies as awesome as the trailers were. That wish, amazingly, came true. One of the trailers, however, featured two Sith, a master and his apprentice, Darth Bane I think is his name, and they had to fight these two Jedi, a master and apprentice as well. The Sith master basically looked just like Kylo Ren (when he has his mask) and I remember thinking to myself, “That is a cool Sith.”

Well, they basically brought that Sith to life with Kylo Ren and it’s why I find him so cool. Not a long time ago he didn’t even exist in the Star Wars universe but now that he does I can’t imagine Star Wars without him. I can’t wait to see him tear up some more stuff and be confused in Episode IX. It’s going to be so much fun.

13. Death Troopers

Death Trooper BlasTech E-11D Rifle

There are stormtroopers and then there are Death Troopers. Death Troopers, are in a word, EPIC! First of all, they’re super scary. I mean I definitely wouldn’t want to run into any death troopers if I was in the Star Wars galaxy. Secondly, they’re all black. Who doesn’t love something in all black? Third, they sound really cool. The fact that their voices are muffled so individuals can’t understand what they are saying is undoubtedly one of the coolest things I have ever seen in Star Wars. Four, they can actually shoot their targets. Stormtroopers are known for being terrible aimers but not these troopers. They shoot so accurately it’s actually to the detriment to many rebels in Rogue One. And five, I know I’ve said this already but they’re really cool.

Once again it’s unfortunate that their only appearance is in Rogue One but they were so awesome it didn’t even matter.

14. Elite Praetorian Guards

The Praetorian Guards are undoubtedly the coolest addition to Star Wars in the last three years. I’ve been a fan of the mysterious Imperial Guards since I first saw them as a young girl and to finally see a version of them that is actually cooler and is involved in an action scene is beyond happiness for me.

You have no idea how much I’ve longed to see the Imperial Guards in action. They were always standing around looking cool with their red robes and long pikes. I wanted to see what they could do if a fight ever arose. Well, I might not have been able to see the skills of the Imperial Guards but the Praetorian Guards definitely sufficed.

I’m telling you, I am totally dressing up as a Praetorian Guard for Halloween. I love them that much. And they have so many different types of weapons too. Ha-ha. They’re just awesome! Even though Kylo Ren and Rey killed them all I’m still glad they were given the chance to shine because they totally deserved it.

Well, these are the fourteen coolest additions to the Star Wars universe. I’m sure with Solo: A Star Wars StoryEpisode IX, and the untitled Obi-Wan film there will be many more incredible creatures, ships, characters, and worlds that will add to my list of awesome additions in Star Wars.

I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I had fun writing it and I thank you for reading. Have a wonderful day and May the Force Be With You.
