Who Is The Evilest Villain in ‘Star Wars’?

Star Wars is full of heroes and villains, the light and the dark, good and evil, but of the many antagonists of the juggernaut science fiction franchise who is the most evil? From the diabolical plans of the Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine to the hateful wrath of General Hux there have been some rather evil dudes (and one lady) who have graced the Star Wars list of baddies and I’m going to tell you who I think is the most evil of them all. Enjoy!

6. Director Krennic

Director Orson Krennic

When I saw the first teaser for Rogue One Director Krennic looked legitimately menacing. I had never seen an Imperial officer dressed in white before which gave him an air of superiority and intimidation that I had never seen. When I watched the movie it was disappointing to find out he wasn’t as terrifying as he appeared to be. Maybe he had been a little more frightening before the reshoots changed much of the film but the end product produced a bloated antagonist whose goal and motivations weren’t nearly as menacing as they could’ve been. He’s definitely one of the coolest looking villains in Star Wars but he’s also one of the lamest.

5. Darth Vader

Darth Vader

Darth Vader is undoubtedly an evil guy but he isn’t nearly as evil as the other villains later on in this list. He made a mistake, he went to the Dark Side because he thought Palpatine could help him save Padme, and after that of course he was evil. He’s definitely everything that Krennic is not; ruthless, terrifying, authoritative. Darth Vader’s no joke. He’s also not as villainous as he pretends to be though, that’s why Luke was able to turn him back to the light. Hate and the hunger for power is what drove him to become the monster that he was for so long but that good side of him was still in there. That’s why instead of killing Luke in the Cloud City he tried to get Luke to join him so they could rule the galaxy as, in his words, “Father and son.” That’s also why when he saw Luke again before he took him to the Death Star he had a private conversation with him instead of treating him like he didn’t care the slightest about him. Darth Vader is, of course, the main villain of the original trilogy but he definitely isn’t as villainous as some of the other villains in the franchise.

4. Grand Moff Tarkin

Grand Moff Tarkin

Tarkin is undoubtedly one of the evilest villains in Star Wars because first of all, he commanded Darth Vader of all people. Darth Vader doesn’t let anyone boss him around but Tarkin is such a boss that he can command even the most temperamental agent of the Empire and never get choked. He also had a rather expansive vision on the tyrannic dominion he wanted to obtain over the galaxy and was willing to achieve that goal by any means necessary, even if that meant obliterating an entire system. That’s ruthless and heartlessly evil and one of the reasons why Tarkin is still one of the scariest villains in Star Wars. (It’s ironic, he died aboard the planet killing machine that he was so proud of. That was some serious karma.)

3. Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren is quite the conflicted fellow. At one point he’s willing to save Rey (mmm-hmm, we see you Kylo having a crush on her) and tease us with the idea that he might go good and then at other times he’s pure evil as he heartlessly kills people and watches as millions of souls get evaporated from the universe. Even though he’s my favorite character in the new trilogy simply because he’s such a complicated man he’s still ridiculously evil. I mean who kills their own father? Only an evil person.

I recently watched The Force Awakens and it’s still utterly heartbreaking watching him thrust his lightsaber through Han’s heart. In The Last Jedi Rian Johnson helped humanize him and give us his side of the story but at the root of it all Kylo Ren is still one of the most evil villains in the movies. It’s why he remained a bad guy and didn’t want to join Rey in the light. It’s why he wanted to destroy the Resistance into oblivion. He’s evil, pure and simple, and I don’t know what it’s going to take for him to be redeemed, if he ever is but I can’t wait to find out. 🙂

2. General Hux

General Hux

General Hux might have one of the smaller roles in the new trilogy but he’s definitely the most evil and ruthless of them all. First off, he got Phasma to kill his own father so he could become the new General of the First Order (I found this information out from the novel, Phasma.) That’s pretty ruthless.

Secondly, it was his idea to destroy the Republic. I remember the first time I watched The Force Awakens and thinking to myself, “Who is this red-headed guy?” I didn’t take him very seriously…until he made that wrathful speech about annihilating the Republic and then the First Order actually did destroy one of the coolest systems in Star Wars, the Hosnian Prime. I was mortified. Coruscant is one of my favorite planets and to see it get obliterated was nearly as heartbreaking as seeing Han die. That’s the moment I realized Hux was no joke.

After that there hasn’t been a lot of moments from him that have conveyed his immensely evil spirit but it’s definitely still there. Like when he discovered Snoke’s halved body. In that split second before Kylo Ren awoke from his unconsciousness he almost shot Kylo Ren dead with his blaster but wasn’t able to in time. That ruthless act that he almost achieved is one of the smaller hints from The Last Jedi that might turn into something larger in Episode IX. Kylo Ren better watch his back because if Hux has anything to do with it he’ll have Ren assassinated faster than you can blink.

1. Emperor Palpatine

Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious

Darth Sidious is undoubtedly the evilest villains in Star Wars. His dastardly plan to wipe out the Jedi and take over the Republic took years to happen but how it happened is super creepy. He used individuals like Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku/Darth Tyrannus to slowly make his plan come into fruition and as you see everything coming together it’s just horrifying to watch. The genocide of the Jedi was terribly brutal and the pain he caused for decades afterward is beyond the definition of evil. There have been some terrible baddies in movies but I would definitely have to place Palpatine as one of the most evil antagonists of all time, he’s that terrible.

The fact that Darth Vader was the one to bring about his demise after Palpatine was the one who slowly nurtured him into becoming the monster that he was is kind of amazing. All in all, it’s going to be a while before there’s a Star Wars villain who can top Palpatine in the evil department because the way Palpatine orchestrated the fall of both the Old Republic and the Jedi is simply horrifying to observe.

Well, that’s who I think is the evilest villain in Star Wars is. I didn’t include in this list other antagonists like Supreme Leader Snoke, Captain Phasma, or Count Dooku because while they are part of the Star Wars villain club they didn’t have important enough roles to enter this list.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Force Be With You.
