Han Solo is one of the greatest and most beloved characters in Star Wars because, well, he’s awesome! He’s charismatic, he’s funny, he’s charming, and he has brought me so much joy through the years. So today on this segment of Greatest Moments I’m going to share with you all of the scenes that have made him one of my favorite characters.
1. Saving Luke
Han was a great addition to A New Hope. You had Luke who was the innocent farm boy who you can’t help but root for and then Han was the exact opposite. He was cocky, narcissistic, a little jerky at times, but at the end of the day he was a hero at heart. That’s why instead of leaving the Rebellion to their devices and jumping to the other side of the galaxy he came back and saved Luke. It’s, to me, his most heroic moment.
2. Saving Luke Again
By the time of The Empire Strikes Back Han was a full-blown Rebellion hero and his heroic ways weren’t over yet. Over the years Luke had become a dear friend of his and that’s why he didn’t hesitate to go save him. And not only did he find him in the middle of the freezing Hoth wasteland but he kept him alive too against nearly impossible odds. That’s pretty amazing.
3. The Asteroid Maneuver
One of the most impressive displays of piloting in Star Wars is when Han tries to lose the Imperial’s TIE fighters through the asteroid belt surrounding the Hoth system. This is one of the better scenes in The Empire Strikes Back and it’s one of my favorite Han moments.
4. Hiding With the Trash
This is another one of those maneuvers that Han made that was just downright impressive. The fact that he parked on the back of a Star Destroyer away from the technicians’ sensors is brilliant and one of the coolest tricks I’ve seen out of all of the Star Wars movies.
5. “Chewie, we’re home.”
I remember when I saw the trailer for The Force Awakens for the first time. It was already an exciting trailer as it was but when it showed Han and Chewbacca at the end of the trailer I was utterly floored. And it was just as magical a scene in the movie as well. To see an old Han and Chewbacca in a Star Wars movie again was truly incredible. This is still one of my favorite moments from the movie and it’s undoubtedly one of his greatest moments.
6. Using the Crossbow
Throughout the original trilogy I never realized Han never used Chewbacca’s crossbow so this was a funny interaction between the two buddies in The Force Awakens. For so long he had fought alongside his furry friend and had always used his patented blaster. When he discovered the power of Chewie’s crossbow he was a changed man and it was hilarious to observe.
7. Out of Hyperspace into StarKiller Base
Even in his old age Han could fly the Millenium Falcon in such an impeccable fashion. Take this maneuver for example. They launched straight out of hyperspace into a planet and avoided splatting on the cliffs as they sped towards them at blinding speeds. That’s incredible! And he brought the ship to a skidding halt in the snow, preventing the Falcon from careening over the edge of the cliff. That takes some serious piloting skills.
8. A Hero’s Demise
Even though this is undoubtedly one of the most heartbreaking moments in Star Wars it’s also the horrifically perfect ending to Han’s story. The fact that he was brave enough to confront his son, oblivious to the odds of him surviving the encounter, is very remarkable. It’s also, I’d say, his most memorable moment in Star Wars. There was so much heart in that scene and his belief in his son helped evolve even Kylo Ren’s story. His warning to his son that Snoke was using Kylo Ren for his own personal gains ended up leading to Snoke’s eventual demise. So, in a way, Han’s legacy is still living on through Kylo Ren. Hopefully Kylo Ren will come back to the light in Episode IX.
Well, these are, to me, his greatest moments. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Force Be With You.
