The Cosmic Force Just Might Be the Coolest New Creation in ‘Star Wars’

The Last Jedi brought a lot of new concepts to the Star Wars table as it tore down preconceived notions of the Force and the Jedi and created some new things that’ll ensure years of more Star Wars movies. The greatest new addition that has been presented to the Star Wars universe since Kylo Ren…and Rey, of course, isn’t a tangible thing like the Praetorian Guards or the jaw dropping Supremacy but rather a new element of the Force called the Cosmic Force. Let me give you a rundown on the powers of the Force if you’re not familiar.

The Living Force: The concept of the Living Force was brought to life in The Phantom Menace as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jin spoke about it to his then padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi but it’s been around since The Empire Strikes Back when Yoda tried to teach young Luke what the meaning of the Force was.

The Living Force is the force between all living things. It’s the here and the now, the constant energy that imbues the Star Wars universe and can be felt by everything despite the thing knowing it’s being manipulated by the Force or not. And then there’s a new area of the Force that has been introduced and it’s called the Cosmic Force.

The Cosmic Force: The concept of the Cosmic Force is simply the balance between the Light and the Dark. Both Snoke and Luke Skywalker understood this deeper notion of the Force.

Snoke: “Darkness rises, and light to meet it.”

Luke Skywalker: “Powerful light, powerful darkness.”

But here’s why the Cosmic Force is so ridiculously awesome. Let me take you through the Star Wars movie timeline, from the years of The Phantom Menace all the way until the present years of The Last Jedi to give you a full idea of powerfully incredible the Cosmic Force is.

Anakin is Born

One of the corniest moments in The Phantom Menace is when Qui-Gon asks Anakin’s mother, Shmi, who the father was of her child and she responds that there was no father. At that moment Anakin became basically the Jesus of Star Wars and Shmi was Mary which isn’t necessarily terrible, it just wasn’t cool thinking that Anakin, the eventual Darth Vader, was some destined midichlorian bubble. But the Cosmic Force completely changes what I used to think about this scene.

As Senator Palpatine a.k.a Darth Sidious began to become stronger the Cosmic Force needed a vessel as powerful as him to combat that rise of darkness. So it created in Shmi a baby that would one day become that powerful vessel of light.

Jump forward over a decade and Darth Sidious managed to turn Anakin, the child of destiny, to the dark side and so the Cosmic Force was at work again.

Luke Skywalker Arrives

So as Darth Vader and Darth Sidious dominated reign over the galaxy the Cosmic Force needed a new vessel to bring balance to the universe and that was in the form of Anakin’s son, Luke Skywalker.

The Force led him onto a journey that would eventually direct him to Yoda who would teach him in the ways of the Force and transform him into a Jedi. Darth Sidious knew this and wanted to stop the flow of the Cosmic Force by bringing Luke into his ranks of the dark side along with Vader but this time Palpatine would not win.

And so for many years there was peace as the war ceased and the light prevailed. But Snoke waited patiently in the shadows of Unknown Space, altering the flow of the Cosmic Force in the form of Han and Leia’s son, Ben Solo.

Ben Solo Becomes Kylo Ren

When Ben Solo was born there was still peace for some time but as his powers began to grow and the darkness in him started to rise Leia sent him to Luke for teaching. Luke Skywalker started to create a new Jedi Order, which Snoke wanted, for it was a major step in his plan for galactic domination, and began training his students.

Ben Solo was never rid of the darkness within him, in fact it only increased during his training, and when Luke saw visions of his future which contained death and destruction he tried to take matters into his own hands and kill him. But he didn’t commit the terrible act because what uncle wants to murder their nephew, but it was too late, and Ben Solo completely converted to the dark side and became Kylo Ren.

Luke Skywalker was the vessel of powerful light, Snoke was the vessel of powerful darkness, and in Ben Solo Snoke saw the incredible potential of someone who could harness the energies of light and dark and bend the Cosmic Force to his will.

After his tragic mistake Luke placed himself in exile and the presence of the light in the universe was no more.

The Force Awakens in Rey

And so what did the Cosmic Force do? It found another vessel to provide balance and that was in the form of Rey. As the darkness began to rise further and further in Kylo Ren there needed to be his equal in the light and that explains why Rey became so powerful so quickly and it explains why she was so afraid of her own self. She knew nothing of the Force except from stories she heard around Jakku and then to have that incredible power within yourself all of a sudden would be frightening.

Rey was the new chosen one for the light and Snoke, knowing this, wanted to eliminate that threat that would end his plan for dominion. But that’s why the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey is so impactful to the story of this trilogy.

The Light and the Dark

Rey and Kylo are literally the balance between the light and the dark. Both of them have internal conflicts within themselves and both switch from side to side on a whim but when they’re together they’re almost magnetic, drawn to each other across galaxies despite their animosity towards each other. Some would say their strange magnetism is romantically motivated, which I definitely feel is kind of true, but what mainly makes them so inclined towards each other is the will of the Cosmic Force and that need for balance.

It’s so strong that when Kylo Ren was faced with the choice between killing Snoke or killing Rey he chose the former, continuing that cycle of balance whether than falling under the shroud of greed and power that Snoke was presenting to him and eliminating that vessel of light in Rey.

It’s also the reason why he tried to get Rey to join him. He actually wants what is kind of right which is the elimination of the Jedi, the Sith, and all of those early ideals for a new order which seeks the balance of humanity in the universe. In his eyes this is the only way there can be peace but for Rey she still sees the monster that Kylo Ren can be and she doesn’t feel that she can trust him in that moment. So she fights him and they participate in a Force battle that displays how equal they are in the Force as both of their power splits Luke’s lightsaber in half.

And so the endless cycle of light vs. dark continues but will there ever be balance? Who knows but here’s yet another stunning revelation I obtained from learning about the power of the Cosmic Force.

Both Snoke and Luke Skywalker Died

The Cosmic Force knew it was time for the old vessels of powerful light and darkness to become no more and so in the final events of The Last Jedi Snoke, the master of Kylo Ren, was eliminated from the equation and Luke, the master of Rey, became one with the Force. This forces that notion that Kylo Ren and Rey are the sole occupants of this new story and that they are the ones who will either continue the long war between light and dark or will finally bring peace to the galaxy.

The Meaning of the End of The Last Jedi

Temiri Blagg

And that brings me to the end of The Last Jedi. The movie doesn’t finish with the Millenium Falcon flying through hyperspace to a new Resistance location but rather with a group of children that had been shown earlier in the film during the Canto Bight scenes. One of them, a ragtag boy named Temiri Blagg, is shown using the Force to grab a broom and sweep the stables but as he looks up to the starry night sky he envisions himself one day becoming as much of a hero as Luke Skywalker had been.

What’s slightly creepy about this part is the fact that while Temiri is looking to the stars obviously dreaming about becoming a Jedi one day there’s another kid just like him brooding in darkness because that’s just the way of the Cosmic Force. No matter what happens there will always be light and darkness in the galaxy and Luke understood this, that’s why he placed himself in exile. He felt he was protecting the galaxy by cutting himself off from the Force and preventing another person powerful in the ways of darkness from rising.

If we ever see Temiri again as an adult who’s powerful in the ways of the Light you can be almost certain that there will be another person just as powerful as him in the ways of the Dark and that’s fascinating just to think about.

My Conclusion of the Cosmic Force

Father

I didn’t realize it but when I watched The Clone Wars series there was already a strong introduction to the concept of the Cosmic Force through a trio of fascinating episodes as Anakin, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan got trapped in this Force realm called Mortis where three Force beings resided. The Father (who you see here in the picture) was the symbol of balance between the light and the dark and his daughter was the embodiment of light and his son was darkness. Long story short the son (the Dark Side) killed the daughter (the Light Side) and then the father (the Balance) killed the son but ended up dying in the process so the Cosmic Force, I think, is kind of looking for replacements. Kylo Ren and Rey represent that balance the universe has so desperately needed for decades. Maybe Episode IX will see that theory through and we’ll finally get the full Rey/Kylo Ren companionship that would be so awesome to observe.

This idea of the Cosmic Force also gives Disney and LucasFilm an excuse to keep making Star Wars movies, for as long as there is light and darkness there will always be conflict in the universe and that only means new stories to tell. Even if Kylo Ren and Rey created a new order that focused on teaching those with the Force how to harness the light and dark within them there will always be someone who goes too far to the left or too far to the right.

Whatever the case, the Cosmic Force is ridiculously cool and that’s why I had to write this long post to share with you how I feel about this new element to the mystical power and what it could mean for the future of Star Wars. I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I had a blast writing it and I thank you for reading. May the Cosmic Force be with you. 🙂

      1. That would be the ultimate shocker if Snoke returned in ‘Episode IX’ to enact his revenge on Kylo Ren for “killing him.” That could also be a great development for maybe Kylo and Rey becoming a team again because to defeat the powerful “real” Snoke they would have to come together in order to stop him. That could turn into something rather epic (unfortunately I have a feeling J.J Abrams wouldn’t do that but you never know.) 🙂

      2. I think Snoke knew that he was going to do that because he said that he saw hid every intent, and he was just pretending that he was surprised that Kylo Ren killed him. Another thing, if Snoke had really died, why did the guards fight them? If he really did die, then Kylo would be the next Supreme Leader, and they wouldn’t fight him. And, afterwords, he sees Rey again, even though, if Snoke had actually died, they wouldn’t be able to do that. I think that Snoke wanted to see how good of a team Kylo Ren and Rey were. 🙂

      3. Yeah…. Ughhhhhhh………..
To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have thought of that unless my cousin told me about how Snoke looked a lot younger before Kylo Ren killed him, just like Luke when he did his Force projection thingy… That’s when we (me and my mom) thought of that…. 🙂

  1. Fascinating reading! Thank you. I’m glad you wrote it out in a timeline fashion.

So! Darkness rises, and light to meet it. OR—Luke and Snoke both die. But this raises yet another question—

Hmmm. Once Luke (light) & Snoke (Darkness) are killed, rather than have another Darkness rise and another Light to meet it? Why not just not have anyone rise, on either side? This actually worked, for awhile.

Why must darkness rise in the first place if there can be relative Peace if neither light or darkness rise? I am also thinking of one more possibilty —-

Instead of Darkness rising and Light to meet it, why not simply have a powerful and BALANCED person arise? Perhaps REVAN was such a person, but only at the very end.

On a different note, the whole idea of Kylo Ren and Rey having any romantic anything between them, naaaaahh, i just cant get into it. I think it takes away from the story rather than adds to it.

I’d still like to find out more about Maz Kanata, and— see more exploration of the unknown regions. What if some ancient & powerful technology were discovered?
