Could Kylo Ren and Poe Be Good Leaders?

The Last Jedi has been out on Blu-Ray and Digital for quite some time now and after having seen the film a numerous amount of times I can finally start looking forward to the future and what this movie might be setting up. I’m not trying to create any outlandish theories or bring any exciting ideas to the table just yet, I’ll let other people do that, but I am starting to look at what Rian Johnson left in Episode VIII and what it could mean moving forward. Like the aspect of new leadership by the end of The Last Jedi for the Resistance and the First Order.

At the beginning of The Last Jedi both Poe and Kylo Ren were headstrong commanders making forging their own paths in the universe but by the end of the movie they are both powerful leaders heading into the next movie but can they handle that responsibility of being, well, a leader? And that’s what I’m excited to talk with you about in this post and I hope you enjoy.

So, let’s first look at Kylo Ren.

Supreme Leader Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren is a hothead. He has been ever since The Force Awakens. He doesn’t have great control over his temper or his emotions and that could be a detriment for the First Order. For the entirety of his involvement with the First Order he has been a commander, an assassin training to harness the Dark Side to become more powerful and following his master’s every command, but now that he’s off the leash what does that mean?

I have a feeling that in Episode IX his main objective will be to find Rey which is, of course, a more personal issue between him and Rey rather than something that should involve, well, the entire First Order. His lack of emotional stability could be a real hindrance for the First Order and that only means one thing; Hux is going to expose him real quickly and decisively. The fact that Hux didn’t die in the film means only one thing, he will definitely stick around to continue to be a prickly thorn in Ren’s side and I know he’s just waiting to strike Kylo down.

I’m actually nervous for Kylo Ren, if I’m being honest. I don’t think he has the maturity to be a great leader and that might backfire on him. Of course, a few years might pass and when we see him again he’ll be a slightly calmer, much more mature version of himself than last we saw him but if The Last Jedi is any indication he’s undoubtedly going to be a mess.

“General” Poe Dameron

I’m already predicting it, Poe will become General in Episode IX which is definitely kind of a cool development for him. Poe is a wonderful Star Wars character (mainly because he’s the most awesome pilot EVER!) but I don’t know if I exactly like him as a leader type. A lot of people didn’t like Poe in The Last Jedi because of his frantic attitude that never once seemed to stop. I’ll always love him as a pilot but he can definitely tone down on all of his other aspects.

But I’m losing focus here. This post isn’t about my personal preferences about the character, it’s instead about my thoughts on rather he would make a good leader or not. Well, I definitely think he’s going to be a GREAT leader. I mean, who doesn’t want to be led by Poe Dameron, the best (in my opinion) pilot in the galaxy, in a war against the First Order. I would be the best first person signing up. And I think that’s why he’s going to be such a fantastic general, if he does, indeed, become that.

His charm and his maturity (which he gained thanks to Holdo and Leia teaching him a thing or two about leadership) is going to make him become the leader that he was born to be. And Leia knew that if she taught him correctly he could become the general that the Resistance needed. That’s why she was so upset when he continued to act like he didn’t understand what it meant to be a leader. She knew she was growing weak and tired and she knew she needed to have that strong replacement that would one day guide the Resistance to a resounding victory (I hope) for the galaxy.

So, yes, between these two strong-willed men they definitely have both faced their challenges but I think Poe is really the only one cut out to be a natural leader. Kylo Ren is just too much all the time. I don’t even think he knows how to be calm in stressful situations. But we’ll see what happens. All in all, I’m already excited to see Episode IX. 🙂

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a glorious day. May the Force be with you.

  1. I’m guessing their arcs are exactly as you project. The next film, certainly for Poe at least, will see these guys becoming proper leaders. I’m going to go far out, though, and predict they will BOTH be leaders for the light by the end.
