The Ten Greatest Marvel Action Scenes: The Updated Version

Marvel movies are highly based upon the superheroes and their constant struggles to save the world but at the heart of every Marvel movie are the action scenes. From Iron Man to the latest installment, Avengers: Infinity War, the action scenes never disappoint. So, after ten years and nineteen movies what are the ten greatest action scenes of them all? I’m very excited to share them with you and I hope you enjoy. 🙂

10. The Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is a great film because it has one of the best stories told in the MCU but it also has some of the best action as well. That final battle between the Guardians and the Ravagers versus Ronan the Accuser and his army is downright fun to watch and makes the movie totally worth viewing.

9. Escaping Sakaar

Thor: Ragnarok was a fun movie and this scene embodied the thrilling aspect of the film as Thor, Valkyrie, and Bruce Banner planned a daring escape from the junk world, Sakaar. It’s also one of my favorite action scenes because Valkyrie really shined at this part. She was just as powerful as Thor as she jumped from ship to ship wrecking them left and right with little more than a sword and her appalling strength. Awesome! And the retro music for this scene perfectly provides that wildly different vibe which separated it from every other Marvel film.

8. An Airport Tarmac Battle

While the fight between Iron Man and his team vs. Captain America and his troupe wasn’t as suspenseful as I might have wished for it definitely had some very memorable and enjoyable moments as we got to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes duke it out. And the match-ups were so entertaining. Watching Ant-Man infiltrate Iron Man’s suit and nearly shut it down was brilliant, seeing Spider-Man fight Captain America was some of the greatest interaction between two Marvel heroes so far, and watching Ant-Man become Giant-Man was exceptionally amazing. When I saw this movie for the first time I literally hollered when Scott Lang became Giant-Man. It was undoubtedly one of the most shocking surprises in the MCU and it still makes me smile to this day. This scene had a lot of nuggets, literally small and large, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite action scenes.

7. The Battle of New York

The Avengers turned me into a Marvel fan for so many reasons but one of the reasons why is because of that incredible action sequence in the last section of the movie. There was so much action and heroism, peril and explosions, and just straight down awesomeness. It was definitely better than I could’ve ever expected and it really set a precedent for upcoming Avengers films.

6. Thor and the Fire Demons

I knew Thor: Ragnarok was going to be one of my favorite Marvel movies as soon as the film started. Thor was captured by this fire god, Sautur or something like that, but of course he willingly got himself imprisoned and then, like a hero, fought the fire god and his demons to the awesome backdrop of Led Zeppelin’s song, “Immigrant Song” and that song made this scene OFF. THE. CHAIN!!!! It’s really become one of my favorite Marvel action scenes even after only watching the movie three times and it was a great way to introduce us viewers to this newer, much more awesome, Thor.

5. Captain America and Co. Saves the Day

I’m not one to absolutely lose in it a crowded movie theater but when Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon showed up to save Scarlet Witch and Vision from Thanos’s minions I couldn’t contain my excitement. I literally pumped my fist in the air which I NEVER do when I’m watching something in a movie theater. That’s how awesome this scene was for me…both times. Seeing these characters that I’ve grown to love so much work together as a perfect unit against those two villains with the classic “Avengers” theme playing in the background was just EPIC! It was one of my favorite scenes in Infinity War and, to me, Captain America’s greatest moment in the film.

4. Wakandans in Korea

The more I watch this action sequence the more awesome it becomes. The fascinating brawl between T’Challa, Nakia, and Okoye against Klaue and his ruffians is just perfect and has some incredible music that makes the scene that much more enjoyable. And the car chase set to the backdrop of Kendrick Lamar is 100% superb. Black Panther didn’t rely on its action to be a great movie but its action definitely helped make the film that much better.

3. Iron Man vs. Captain America

This scene is, to me, undoubtedly one of the most emotional of all of the Marvel films as I watched with horror Iron Man and Captain America fighting in a duel that seemed like it was going to end lethally. I couldn’t believe it. Iron Man and Captain America were really fighting, not in the way that bickering friends fight, but as mortal enemies and it was shocking to see. But while this is a very somber action scene that’s part of the reason why it’s one of the best. Before Infinity War the MCU didn’t have a lot of very impactful moments that could possibly bring you to tears but this was definitely one of them. And to see that in Avengers 3 that invisible but tangible rift between Tony and Steve was still there makes this scene all the more important and heartbreaking at the same time. If they reunite in Avengers 4 I hope there is a bit of cordiality between them.

2. The Winter Soldier Strikes

There’s something gloriously satisfying, riveting, and epic about this action scene featuring the fugitives, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Sam Wilson and their adversary, The Winter Soldier and his HYDRA buddies. There’s no fancy explosions, well, except for one, it isn’t a world ending event taking place, but the simplicity of this action scene is why I love it so much. The heroes of this film aren’t equipped with special items or wearing their hero suits, they’re dressed in jeans and jackets trying to fight this foe who’s stronger and bent on their deaths.

It leads to one of my favorite Captain America fights as he brawls with Bucky in a desperate duel that isn’t pretty in the slightest. The choreography is crude but that’s what makes it so great. Steve Rogers was running out of fuel fast and it took all he had to keep The Winter Soldier from finishing him off. And even Black Widow didn’t come away from that encounter unscathed as The Winter Soldier shot her in the shoulder, nearly killing her! This scene has everything I love in an action scene and that’s why it’s still one of my favorites.

1. Thanos and the Heroes on Titan

Avengers: Infinity War had some remarkable action scenes but I don’t think any of them reached the level that this action sequence did. We got to see all of these incredible heroes taking turns and fighting Thanos. And they were doing a great job too. And then when Star-Lord screwed up the plan and Thanos went plum off it was quite the marvel to behold. I remember how wide my eyes got when he literally summoned comets from the nearby moon. Up to that point Thanos had proved himself as an ultimately powerful villain but that was just INCREDIBLE and unlike anything I could’ve predicted in a Marvel movie before. And to hear this scene in IMAX, the mere sound is enough to knock your socks off. For a long while The Winter Soldier had my favorite action scene but it has been thoroughly dethroned thanks to Infinity War.

Well, this is my updated list of favorite action scenes in Marvel. Maybe Ant-Man and the Wasp will provide some entries into this list but this is as it stands right now. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a marvel-ous day.
