The fantastic thing about these Star Wars standalone films are the gaps that they are filling in the Star Wars universe. Rogue One introduced us to the group of rebels who stole the Death Star plans and perfectly ended the movie by showing Darth Vader trying to obtain those plans, the rebels just barely managing to escape, and a brief cameo of Princess Leia aboard the Tantative IV smiling with hope and determination. And all of that perfectly led into A New Hope in one of the most flawless ways I could’ve never imagined.
So, Solo decided to take people’s expectations up a notch by introducing….
MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!!! This is the biggest spoiler of the movie and so I highly advise you to stop reading now if you haven’t seen Solo yet. Thank you and enjoy the rest of the post.
The One and Only, Sith Lord Darth Maul, double bladed lightsaber and all.
Yes, it’s true. The Darth Maul made a cameo at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story and dropped the mike on the entire movie experience. Now, for those of you who might be completely peeved by this decision to include a fan favorite in Solo who clearly “died” in The Phantom Menace spoiler alert, he actually didn’t die. Through The Clone Wars animated series we find out he actually survived the fall and used his immense hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi to stay alive.
Another Dathomirian Sith apprentice by the name of Savage Opress found him on a junk planet named Lotho Minor where he took the ruined Maul back to his home planet, Dathomir. There a Nightsister healed his mind and provided him a new robotic lower half, making him whole once more. He then set out to create his own criminal empire which consisted of all of the criminal factions in the galaxy with a plan to overthrow Darth Sidious and the Republic. As his power grew Palpatine grew wary of his former apprentice’s burgeoning army and went to give him a personal warning. Palpatine killed Maul’s right-hand man, Savage Opress, and nearly killed Darth Maul but he let him live. Darth Maul would then never test his former master’s might again.
So when we see Darth Maul at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story it really was a fantastic shock that made all of the sense in the world. Darth Maul is a crime lord goliath and to know that Dryden Vos, first of all, was working for him and now Qi’Ra is supposedly going to partner with the Sith crime lord. That is SO cool. The shock I felt when I saw Darth Maul again was honestly one of the best surprises I could’ve experienced in a Star Wars film. Maul has always been one of my favorite Star Wars characters and so to see him again in an actual movie was great with a capital G.
Did the reveal of Maul in Solo excite you as well? I’d love to hear your opinions on the surprise cameo in the comments below. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.
