Ranking the Action in ‘Star Wars’ Movies; from Worst to Best

One of the funnest things about watching a Star Wars movie is the action. No matter how lackluster a Star Wars film may be the action is always entertaining. With ten movies now in the franchise which films reign supreme in the action department and which movies don’t? That’s what I’m here to share with you. Enjoy!

10. A New Hope

I love A New Hope because it’s the first Star Wars movie ever made. If it wasn’t for A New Hope being such an amazing film when it came over forty years ago the Star Wars franchise probably wouldn’t exist right now. But while A New Hope is undoubtedly a great movie the action is about as boring as it gets in comparison to the other nine Star Wars films. I mean, it has the slowest lightsaber duel ever created. I rest my case.

9. Return of the Jedi

If Return of the Jedi didn’t have the annoying Ewoks I think I would like the movie a lot more but unfortunately it does. Another thing Return of the Jedi doesn’t have that’s truly great is the action. I love the Jabba the Hutt battle on Tatooine at the beginning of the film, the speeder bike chase will always be one of the coolest things to happen in Star Wars, and Luke versus Darth Vader at the end of the movie always gives me chills, but these scenes can’t hold up to the rest of the competition.

8. The Phantom Menace

The Buunta Eve podrace is off the chain! I get chills every time I watch it. And the duel between Darth Maul, Jedi Master Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan Kenobi is downright exceptional (mainly because of the music.) 🙂

7. The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi is a great film but it relies heavily on dialogue and character growth rather than action scenes to numb the brain with happiness. Now, that doesn’t mean The Last Jedi doesn’t have any good action scenes. The space battle at the beginning of the movie is fantastic! And The fight between Rey and Kylo Ren versus the Praetorian Guards is one of the greatest lightsaber duels ever made, visually and choreographically. There were, however, some disappointments like the Finn/Phasma fight which ended far too quickly and the Battle on Crait could’ve easily been better.

6. Revenge of the Sith

Simply the last lightsaber duels between Obi-Wan/Anakin and Yoda/Darth Sidious places this movie at #6 on this list. End of discussion.

5. The Empire Strikes Back

I still marvel at The Empire Strikes Back sometimes because of its incredible special effects. The movie came out in 1980 and yet it still looks better than some movies today! That’s amazing! And the action scenes were phenomenal in this movie. From the chase through the asteroid field to the showdown between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader this movie has some fantastic action scenes.

4. Attack of the Clones

I may dislike a lot of things about Attack of the Clones but the action isn’t one of those things. I mean, this movie has so many great action scenes it would be hard to name them all…but I will name a few.

  1. The Coruscant Speeder Chase
  2. The Obi-Wan/Jango Fight on Kamino
  3. The Asteroid Field Space Battle

And that’s just a few of the action scenes! If you love action watch Attack of the Clones. You will not be disappointed.

3. Rogue One

Rogue One is the Star Wars version of a war film so of course it’s going to be magnificent in the action department. In fact, the last thirty-forty minutes of the film is solely focused on the Battle of Scarif which is about as action-packed as it gets. And that Darth Vader scene at the end is horrifically beautiful to watch.

2. The Force Awakens

While The Last Jedi revolves mainly around the story of the movie opposed to the action The Force Awakens is the exact opposite. J.J Abrams knew he had to make Star Wars great again and what better way to do that than to make a fantastic Star Wars movie filled to the rim with mind-boggling, smile-inducing action scenes that don’t seem to stop. And that’s why it’s such a fun movie to watch. The storyline is simple, the characters are lovable, and the movie is awesome. 🙂

1. Solo

Solo may have had a dismal box office run but it was honestly one of the best Star Wars movies I ever watched. Like The Force Awakens this movie didn’t focus on a complex storyline. Instead it revolved around action, action, and more action. I mean the movie literally starts with action! Yeah, that’s pretty awesome.

If you missed Solo I implore you to watch it when it arrives on digital. If you loved The Force Awakens you will absolutely enjoy this movie because it truly is a blast to watch.

P.S. And the Kessel Run sequence is totally as amazing as you’d imagine it to be.

So, this is how I rank the action in the ten Star Wars movies so far. I’m sure J.J Abrams will deliver yet another high-octane Star Wars movie with Episode IX and I couldn’t be more excited to see it.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a beautiful day. May the Force be with you.

    1. The Original Trilogy has some exciting action but undoubtedly through the years action in movies have gotten better. The Cloud City action sequence in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is downright thrilling but against scenes like the Conveyex heist in ‘Solo’ it’s barely a competition.

But that’s just my opinion. Thanks for the comment. 🙂
