‘Star Wars’ Heroes vs. Villains: Who’s Cooler?

Star Wars has been a classic tale of good versus evil since it arrived over four decades ago in the form of A New Hope. You had the lovable heroes; Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Ben Kenobi, and the droids, C-3PO and R2-D2. And then there was the ultimate villain, Darth Vader, who emitted menace as soon as he walked in a room.

Over the years the Star Wars franchise has kept up that narrative of the heroes versus the villains in new, exciting ways. Lately the movies have tried to blur the divisions between the protagonists and antagonists to keep viewers guessing but at the end of the day there is still the dark side and the light. It’s fascinating stuff.

But then there’s the question; who’s cooler? Well, that’s what I’m here to share with you and I hope you enjoy. 🙂

The Villains:

Who are the characters that are marketed to the public the most? The villains! Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, the Stormtroopers, those are the characters you immediately can attribute to the brand of Star Wars. And why does this happen? Because they’re really, really cool! Their outfits and personas are so awesome you can’t help but like them.

They’re sometimes scary and yes, they fight the good guys, but they look so darn good being the frightening antagonists that they are. Darth Maul with his red and black skin and his yellow horns is just cool. Darth Vader is one of the most iconic characters ever to appear in cinema because he’s that memorable. Kylo Ren is awesome 24/7. Captain Phasma is seriously the coolest stormtrooper ever created. And then there are plenty of other Star Wars antagonists that are just as mindblowing.

I remember one trailer for The Old Republic game that was coming to the PC several years ago. One of the trailers featured these two really awesome Sith with these masks (the style of one of them actually greatly resembled Kylo Ren’s look in The Force Awakens) and their dark robes and cloaks. They looked so awesome!

And that’s why I, as a Star Wars fan, love the villains so much. What can I say? They’re cool.

The Heroes:

And then you’ve got the heroes who are just as cool in their own ways. They may not wear the awesome black robes and fascinating masks that make them that much cooler but their strength comes from their inspiring stories. The reason why I love the heroes in Star Wars is because they face so many personal obstacles and yet they continue to find ways to prevail in the face of evil. Whether you’re a Jedi, a rebel fighter, a scoundrel, a scavenger, a stormtrooper, a mechanic, a princess, there are so many types of heroes and we can latch onto those characters in ways that we can’t with the villains.

Rey is my favorite Star Wars hero because she represents a strong woman. And being a strong woman doesn’t mean you can’t be vulnerable, as Rey shows her vulnerabilities many times in the movies, but she also shows her strength countless times as well. She’s more than simply a fictional character, she is a role model that girls can look up to and for the longest time we, as women who love Star Wars, didn’t have that.

I grew up with the prequels and Padme definitely wasn’t the role model type. Princess Leia was awesome but at the end of the day Luke was still the trilogy’s chosen one. Now the “chosen one” is a woman in the form of the fabulous Rey and I love it!

I’m Totally a Heroes Girl!

At the end of the day as cool as the villains are with their amazing outfits and looks I’m a fan of the heroes. They’re just simply the best. Luke, Leia, Han, Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, they have all individually brought a smile to my face and I’m always SUPER excited to see them again. I don’t know what’s going to happen in Episode IX but I hope it’s a happy ending. 🙂

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Force be with you.

    1. I can totally understand why you love the villains. Kylo Ren is my favorite ‘Star Wars’ character because he’s so complex and his story can turn all sorts of different ways. I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 🙂
