My Mother’s Ranking of the ‘Star Wars’ Films

As you can probably tell from my blog I. Love. Star Wars! I’ve loved Star Wars ever since I was a baby girl and now, with Disney acquiring Lucasfilm, my love for the franchise has grown even more. And that has appeared to happen with my mother as well.

My mommy has never been an avid Star Wars fan. She knows about the movies but she has never really cared about the films or the characters…until recently. After The Force Awakens my mother has actually started to pay attention to these films and it’s kind of really awesome. So, today, I asked my mommy how she ranked the Star Wars films and I’m here to share her answer with you all. Enjoy!

1. The Force Awakens

My mommy isn’t a fan of going to the movie theaters because, in her words, it’s just an expensive nap but when we sent to see The Force Awakens for the first time my mommy enjoyed it so much that she was willing to watch it with us at the movie theaters again the very next day. Over the years my mother has watched the film numerous times and it has become her favorite Star Wars movie because it’s the only one she actually has seen all the way through more than once. She loves the characters, she loves the story, and it’s a good movie.

2. A New Hope

A New Hope is my mother’s second favorite Star Wars movie simply because it is the one that started it all.

3. Solo: A Star Wars Story

When we went to see Solo my mommy was the least excited person to see it. She thought it was going to be absolutely terrible (because the advertising for the film wasn’t helping at all.) Turns out it was so good she ended up staying awake and watching the entire film…and thoroughly enjoying it by the way.

She loved it because it was really, really good and she loved seeing more of Chewbacca. Chewbacca has always been treated as a side character throughout his involvement in the franchise but Solo approached the iconic Wookie in a completely different light. We get to see him treated as a major character alongside Han, Qi’Ra, etc. and it was kind of awesome.

4. The Phantom Menace

The reason why my mother loves (and remembers) The Phantom Menace is for two reasons. She loves Qui-Gon and she loved the lightsaber duel at the end of the movie. Those are definitely legitimate reasons to like this film.

5. Return of the Jedi

My mother likes Return of the Jedi mainly because of the fascinating Tatooine sequence when Luke and his friends singlehandedly take down Jabba the Hutt and save Han’s life. And she loves the Sarlacc (because who doesn’t?)

6. Rogue One

Rogue One isn’t one of my mother’s favorite Star Wars movies but she does like the beginning when little Jyn is running to safety with her backpack. And she likes that it tells the story of how the Death Star plans were found and taken by this group of recently unknown rebels.

7. The Empire Strikes Back

My mother doesn’t really know anything about The Empire Strikes Back…but she does love it when Han gets frozen in carbonite. (Lol.)

8. The Last Jedi

My mother pretty much can’t stand The Last Jedi for multiple reasons. One; it got on her nerves. Two; she doesn’t like Rey’s training sequences because it takes too long. Three; the Force connection between Kylo Ren and Rey is annoying. Four; she doesn’t like what Rian Johnson did to Maz Kanata. Five; she can’t stand the casino part. Six; there were too many unnecessary scenes. And seven; the movie was WAY too long.

The Last Jedi is my mother’s least favorite Star Wars film (because the next two on this list she hasn’t ever really seen.)

9. Revenge of the Sith

My mother knows what Revenge of the Sith but she’s never gotten the time to watch it. Hence, ninth place on this list.

10. Attack of the Clones

I don’t think my mommy has ever seen even a little bit of Attack of the Clones and so it’s ranked last on this list.

Well, this is how my mommy ranks the Star Wars movies. I had a blast sharing this list with you and I hope you enjoyed. Have a beautiful day and May the Force be with you.

  1. Hahaha, a widely eclectic ranking. My dad loves Star Wars but will never admit it. But every time any one of the episodes from 1 to 6 are on TV, he will watch them. More recently, I started leaving scattered dvd’s of the the new SW films at his house. Sure enough mum say he watched them with impished glee! Well, maybe not glee.

    1. Lol! ‘Star Wars’ is so great it can capture the love of even the most casual viewer. And that’s why they’re still making ‘Star Wars’ movies. There will always be new fans. Loved this comment. 🙂

  2. Hi Annlyel, it is never too late to turn to the light side of the Force (in other words become a fan!) Qui-Gon – check, A New Hope – check…Star Wars in general all good things. Welcome Mommy James to a larger world.
p.s. I heard Boba Fett didn’t like the Sarlacc – he said it was enough to give him heartburn…not to mention the Sarlacc 😀
