I Think Bucky’s Going To Become Captain America in Phase 4 of the MCU

After watching Captain America: The First Avenger the other day it struck me how far Bucky has come in the MCU. He’s been in this story since the beginning and he’s experienced so many twists and turns throughout his involvement in this franchise. I mean, now he’s dead! But since it’s pretty obvious that somehow he will be revived to fight Thanos one more time there is still an imminent doom awaiting a certain man and his name is Steve Rogers.

Captain America has graced six movies in the MCU, he’s played a central part in the overall story of the franchise, and he’s one of the most important characters…but his journey is swiftly coming to an end.

Chris Evans (Captain America) is ready to move on from the shield and start a new direction in his acting career and with him not signing any more contracts it’s pretty clear that Avengers 4 will be his final hurrah. Sebastian Stan (Bucky), however, has signed a nine movie contract with Marvel and get this; he’s only been in four movies so far! That means even after Avengers 4 he’ll return yet again for at least another four movies. Yeah, Bucky is going to be around for a while.

So with Steve Rogers’ Captain America coming to an end a new man behind the shield will have to be crowned and I have a legitimate feeling that it’s going to be Bucky.

In the comics Bucky took the mantle of Captain America for a while. And during my viewing of The First Avenger the other day I think I discovered a secret nod to Bucky eventually becoming the patriotic hero.

Just before Bucky Barnes fell out of the train that would then begin his transformation into The Winter Soldier he was fighting HYDRA soldiers. At one point he picked up Captain America’s fallen shield and used it while fighting. At that moment a lightbulb went off in my brain.

I’ve loved that Marvel likes to place easter eggs throughout their films for us fans who want to connect the dots and this seems like a clear easter egg that is slowly starting to become important. The thing that makes this franchise so special is the writers, directors, etc take these little tiny references and transfer them through these movies into something important.

Like in Iron Man 2 where Wakanda was shown on a map behind Tony Stark. It was a subtle nod toward a storyline that would take place later on. I believe Bucky picking up that shield wasn’t a coincidence and one day he’ll legitimately carry that shield as the new Captain America.

When that happens I’m going to be SO excited I’ll probably reblog this post.

Of course, he may never become Captain America but I just have a feeling that he will. What do you think about this theory? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

  1. Great post, Annlyel! I agree with you 200% about the chances of Bucky becoming the next Captain America! Another thing to consider is Bucky’s growing popularity. With more Bucky related merchandise being sold now than ever before and with a lot of fans wanting Bucky to receive this title, Marvel could definitely consider those key factors into making that decision. There was a video made on the Youtube channel, Looper, called ‘Why Avengers 4 Will Blow You Away’. In that video, the Russo brothers said that the story for Avengers 4 will be original and not based on any preexisting source material. However, in this same video, the Russo brothers also said that their approach to the MCU has been guided by Bucky’s story arc and that a specific journey/story arc that was started in Captain America: The Winter Soldier would be concluded in Avengers 4. No details were explained in this video, so it’ll be interesting to see where the story goes next year.

    1. I literally just watched ‘The Winter Soldier’ yesterday and so hearing that makes me super excited.

And yeah, it’s no surprise Bucky’s popularity has skyrocketed. He’s a great character with a complex storyline. I’d love to see him transform from this brainwashed HYDRA assassin to the beloved Captain America. It would be very awesome indeed. 🙂
