‘The Force Awakens’ or ‘The Last Jedi’: Which Outfit Was Better?

With every installment in a Star Wars trilogy, it is safe to assume that the major characters’ wardrobe will change which is always one of the exciting factors of a new Star Wars movie. The major characters presented in The Force Awakens were incredible heroes and villains with their own sense of style and that style stretched onward into The Last Jedi as each character obtained a new outfit. Some looks were better than others but I’m here today to compare those looks with you all. Enjoy!

Poe Dameron

Poe Dameron doesn’t have the flashiest outfits that have ever been seen in Star Wars because the Resistance is, in essence, a ragtag band of rebels who refuse to let the First Order take over the galaxy. HIs clothing represents that rugged quality of the Resistance.

In The Force Awakens, he had a look perfect for that of somebody visiting the sweltering Jakku; his specially made jacket that’s basically a casual suit of armor, the open-necked shirt for temperature control, and then he’s got his regular pair of pants and boots.

In The Last Jedi, his look was a tad bit more conservative and officer-like. His new jacket, a dark blue one with the Resistance symbol on the shoulder screams rebel fighter, his newest shirt is fashioned more for outer space with the lack of the open neck look, and his pants’ color matches the jacket.

I love both of these looks. They’re simple yet perfectly match Poe Dameron. But I think I would have to say…I like The Last Jedi look a tad bit more.

General Leia Organa

Leia returned in The Force Awakens with a look that brought much nostalgia to Star Wars fans as it resembled her look in Return of the Jedi. Now, while I appreciated this, I felt that it was too boring of a design for a character who has always wowed us with her effortless yet powerful styles.

Her look in The Last Jedi was much more elegant and worthy of her grandeur. The beautiful hairstyle, the jewelry, the fancy clothing, she looks like the daughter of a woman who was once queen of Naboo and the former princess of Alderaan.

Leia easily looked better in The Last Jedi.

Ah, Finn the rebel stormtrooper with a conscience. I absolutely love Finn! He’s a great character with a great story but in terms of his fashion sense it’s rather muted honestly.

In The Force Awakens, he sported black stormtrooper clothing with the exception of Poe’s Resistance jacket.

In The Last Jedi, he was given traditional Resistance garments that look nearly similar to Poe’s outfit in nearly every way.

Honestly, this is a hard pick. They’re both such ordinary looks. I think if I really look at it though, I think I like his outfit in The Force Awakens just a tad bit more simply because it has more personality. He stood out among his fellow heroes and that’s what I like to see in Star Wars. Characters who stand out.

It’s very hard to make an iconic look for a movie character. Especially a Star Wars character. But I think it’s safe to say that Rey has joined the iconic Star Wars character club and that’s partly because of this incredible outfit.

Her look in The Force Awakens was rugged, it totally illustrated that she was a scavenger living in a harsh sandy environment, and yet it still felt just as feminine as Leia’s white dress in A New Hope. This look is so unique and perfect that it has easily become one of my favorite outfits in Star Wars.

And her looks in The Last Jedi were awesome too but they definitely didn’t resonate with me as much as I would’ve imagined they would. Her look on Ach-To with the grey vest was more of an adventurous style. And her outfit in Snoke’s throne room and the rest of the movie was nice but it felt like a hodgepodge of styles rather than a cohesive vision.

I undoubtedly love Rey’s outfit in The Force Awakens way more than her looks in The Last Jedi. It’s going to be hard for them to make a better outfit for her in Episode IX.

The Last Jedi: 2 pts.

Kylo Ren

It’s always awesome seeing Star Wars villains because they have the coolest outfits and looks and Kylo Ren is not an exception.

When he showed up for the first time in The Force Awakens his presence immediately wowed me. The silver-lined mask, the one-shouldered cape, the gloves, everything about his outfit in The Force Awakens was absolutely incredible.

In The Last Jedi, the robe and the awesome cloak was no more replaced with a short tunic and long cloak that made him resemble Anakin more than anything else.

In The Last Jedi, he looked like a warrior while in The Force Awakens he looked more like an assassin than anything else. It’s hard to say which outfit I like more because they’re both so great. But I think I definitely loved Kylo Ren’s outfit in The Force Awakens the most.

The Force Awakens: 3 pts.

The Last Jedi: 2 pts.

So, while The Last Jedi is a great movie with an incredible story it’s obviously clear that the outfits in The Force Awakens were so much better. And that makes me excited for Episode IX. Maybe J.J Abrams and the team of designers will bring that creativity back to the characters’ looks in fresh, original ways that’ll be very awesome to observe.
