Movie Review Flashback: My Spoiler-Free Review of ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Avengers: Endgame marks the end of the Infinity Saga; a fantastic storyline that has been built over twenty-one movies and eleven years. It’s an amazing thought. When Iron Man came out in 2008 I wasn’t even ten-years-old yet. Now I’m twenty (I actually just turned twenty-one a couple of months ago) writing this review and it’s just…wow.

Yesterday, as I left the theater struggling to contain my composure, it didn’t really dawn on me that this was the end of an era. Yes there will be more movies in the MCU and yes the story isn’t over but in a way, it is. To delve into further meaning about this saga’s ending would mean I would have to include spoilers but because this is, in fact, a spoiler-free review I’ll just keep things very basic.

‘The Last Jedi’ Is Really Kylo Ren’s Movie

The other day I watched The Last Jedi (mainly because I wanted to see the Praetorian Guard part again) and as I was watching the movie I realized that while the movie, of course, focused on every character the overall heart and soul of the film was provided by Kylo Ren. Rian Johnson has said many times that Kylo Ren was the character he was most excited to tackle and you can totally tell. He provided a compelling storyline to the Star Wars villain that helped incorporate him into the trilogy in a fascinating way while most of the other characters weren’t treated with as much care and attention. And I love that!

When J.J Abrams introduced this new villain in Kylo Ren I liked him but he ultimately felt too much like a ripoff of Darth Vader’s iconic character. He needed a little more substance and identity so that I could look at him and not immediately see this Darth Vader-wannabe. His best scenes in The Force Awakens were the scenes that involved him without his helmet because not only did we get to see him as his true self but Adam Driver is such a fantastic actor that you want to see his face and his emotions when he’s experiencing things. Rian Johnson knew this so he had Kylo Ren destroy his helmet within his first five minutes in The Last Jedi. Brilliant! That was the first step to his ultimate transformation and a sign that this movie was going to approach this character much differently. Continue reading ‘The Last Jedi’ Is Really Kylo Ren’s Movie

My Ten Favorite Female Villains

There have been many women in films but rarely do you see a compelling female villain. I have seen countless male antagonists who have stolen the show with their creepiness or their sheer awesomeness but being able to enjoy a female villain in a movie is so very hard to find. But today I’m going to list the female baddies whose wicked ways are shone in the most delightful (or horrifying) fashion and have grown to be some of my favorite characters. Enjoy!

10. Red Queen

Alice in Wonderland wasn’t the best Disney movie ever made but one thing I distinctly remembered about the film for years after seeing it in the movie theater nine years ago was the Red Queen. Her putrid behavior and her striking look were unforgettable, standing out amidst a mostly lackluster film that I pretty much erased from memory until I saw it for the second time a few months ago.

Helena Bonham Carter’s performance as the Red Queen wasn’t Oscar worthy but I’ll never forget her incessant screaming for her beloved Jabberwocky anytime soon. Continue reading My Ten Favorite Female Villains

Which Characters Should Appear in Cassian’s Live-Action Series?

When it was announced that there was going to be a live-action series on Disney+ focusing on fan-favorite Cassian Andor I couldn’t believe it. I was and still am so excited about this news. Cassian is my favorite Rogue One character and with this series, he can finally get the backstory that he so absolutely deserves. But there’s another exciting element to this news and that is the idea that other awesome characters can make appearances in this series. Characters we all know and love and haven’t been given enough time to shine. So, on that note, here’s a list of characters that I think could make some surprise appearances on the show.

Mon Mothma

Mon Mothma has played an important leadership role in the Rebellion for many years and as obvious from the movie she has a relationship with Cassian as his superior. I think it is inevitable to see her make an appearance or two in the series.

Darth Vader

While it’s pretty likely that Cassian and Darth Vader will most likely never cross paths there is always a slight possibility that it could potentially. Maybe on one of Cassian’s spy missions, he’ll see Vader from afar or just barely manage to avoid him. That could be very entertaining.

Mirroring Relationships: Han Solo and Qi’Ra/Kylo Ren and Rey

Solo may seem like a pointless prequel that doesn’t bring a lot of meaning to the Star Wars universe but in actuality it’s possibly one of the most important movies in the franchise and this is why:

hanforce.jpg

Han Solo has always been one of the most important characters in Star Wars but if you look at the original trilogy it clearly seems that the movies revolve around Luke’s story and that Han and Leia are supporting characters. But, with the release of the current trilogy films and the latest installment, Solo, it’s safe to say that Han Solo has become more important than one may have thought a few years ago. Now his storyline truly matters, as it may contain clues and revelations for some of his son’s past, present, and future actions in the Star Wars universe.

In fact, during my latest viewing of Solo I realized that the relationship between Han and Qi’Ra is loosely similar to Kylo Ren and Rey’s companionship. Here’s why.
