Movie Review Flashback: The DC Universe Strikes Twice with ‘Shazam!’

Shazam. Who in the world is Shazam? I had never heard of this character before and the name just sounded, well, corny. So I figured this was going to be another DC Comics flop that I wouldn’t want to see but as critic reviews began pouring in and I saw that nearly all of the reviews were astoundingly positive I began to have second thoughts. Maybe this movie was good after all. And then when its Rotten Tomatoes would end up being 91% I figured I had to see what all the fuss was about. I’m so glad I did.

Shazam! isn’t anything special. It’s the story of a fourteen-year-old boy who finds an ancient power and with the simple uttering of the word “Shazam!” he becomes a superhero. It’s very much your ordinary superhero origin story with a mostly predictable plot but the concise storytelling and the legitimate surprises the movie brings is what makes the movie a blast to watch.

The humor is legitimately funny. In fact, I found myself laughing out loud several times while watching the film. It’s also the best element of the movie. If the humor had been corny this movie would’ve been an instant flop but because the movie didn’t take itself too seriously it gave the film a feelgood sort of vibe that I really loved.

What I found was the most surprising, however, was the villain. At first glance, he looks kind of wack right? Well, he isn’t. In fact, he’s actually kind of scary. There are moments when the movie’s legitimately frightening at times and I appreciated that unexpected twist.

My Conclusion of the Film

Shazam! is, in essence, a children’s movie. The only reason why it’s not PG is that there are some frightening images, graphic violence, and some cursing involving the S-word and the D-word but beyond that, it’s very much a children’s film. That means the movie is pretty good but it isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen because, like I said before, it’s made for a younger audience.

But it is a really fun family film to own on Digital or Blu-Ray and it is the perfect movie to bring out after the success of Aquaman.

I’m giving this movie 91 out of a 100 and 4 out of 5 stars. It’s nearly a perfect film but there were some corny moments that exasperated the movie’s situation, dwindling the score of the movie.

All in all, this is a worthy superhero film to enjoy this year.

I thank you for reading this review and I hope you have a great day.
