Will Smith is one of the few actors I can say I’ve never seen a bad movie involving him. No, not all of the films are the best movies I’ve ever seen but he chooses his films very well. I’ve seen so many of his movies, some even very recently, and because of his newest film, Gemini Man, which literally comes out today, it makes perfect sense to celebrate the renowned actor for this week’s A Movie Ranking. Enjoy!
12. Men in Black II
The first Men in Black, amazing. The second one, not so much. Men in Black II is one of those movies that you watch and forget.
The reason why I have this sitting at last on this list is that it is the only Will Smith movie that I haven’t finished. But it’s not exactly bad…but it’s not great either.
10. After Earth
Once again, father and son were reunited to make a movie together, only this time they were facing aliens instead of poverty. I remember watching After Earth with my little sister in a hotel room. It was an okay matinee film but it didn’t grip me like other sci-fi films like Edge of Tomorrow or even War of the Worlds for that matter.
9. The Pursuit of Happyness
Yeah, The Pursuit of Happyness may have garnered Will Smith his second Oscar nomination and in truth, it was a well-written movie, but I found this film to be predictable, a tad bit too long, and a real drag on the emotions (and not in a good way.)
8. Suicide Squad
You know, honestly, Will Smith’s rendition of Deadshot was one of the few reasons why I found a little bit of love for this film. In the midst of the murky storytelling and so-so characters, Deadshot shined in the same way that Harley Quinn grasped our hearts. If the movie had just been about Harley Quinn and Deadshot I think it would’ve been way better.
“Tell the truth.” It’s all I can ever think about when I remember watching this film but in actuality, it’s a pretty good film. It tells the true story of football players’ problems after the NFL when they have to deal with the deadly aftereffects of their concussions. It isn’t pretty and Will Smith does a great job relaying that fact.
6. Independence Day
For some reason, I have never found the gall to finish Independence Day. Well, there’s an obvious reason for that fact. I’m not a fan of the film. However, despite not having finished this film after trying twice to do so it’s still fundamentally better than the previous six movies on this list. And his character is legitimately hilarious.
5. Men in Black III
I went and saw Men in Black III when it came out in 2012 and I enjoyed it then. Since recently seeing it again I was kind of underwhelmed. But…it’s a good movie. And Josh Brolin does an amazing job portraying a young Tommy Lee Jones.
One time my family and I were tidying up our house and we ran into an old CD of Hancock. I had never heard of the film before and so my father put it into his computer and we watched it. I was sucked into the film’s wacky but hilarious story instantly. Will Smith as a drunk, deadbeat superhero? Um, sign me up.
It’s one of the best movie surprises I’ve ever had.
3. Men in Black
The concept of Men in Black could’ve easily been a disaster (like the recent Men in Black film that came out this year, Men in Black: International) and yet, with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith at the helm of this sci-fi action film, it turned into a raging succes.
I’ve watched this movie at least five times in my years and everytime I sit down and watch it I find myself just as thrilled as always.
2. Bad Boys
Absolutely hilarious, Bad Boys is a solid comedy/action film that is written superbly from start to finish. Will Smith shines as the charming Mike Lowry and Martin Lawrence excels as his hilarious partner. If you’ve never seen Bad Boys please do yourself a favor and watch it. It’s so good.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Hitch is my favorite Will Smith movie. I thought Bad Boys or Men in Black would be in this #1 spot but when I really thought about it I realized that I have a true soft spot for Hitch.
As someone who’s not a fan of romantic films, Hitch is a surprise win for me. And with Kevin James, one of my favorite comedians of all time, starring alongside Will Smith in this romantic comedy, Hitch gives me loads of joy whenever I watch it.
So yeah, this is my favorite Will Smith movie…surprisingly.
Of course, there are some new Will Smith that I’m interested in watching; Aladdin, of course, Gemini Man, and the animated film Spies in Disguise. I can’t wait to add those movies to my Will Smith collection.
