A Movie Ranking: Benedict Cumberbatch

My introduction to Benedict Cumberbatch was via Star Trek: Into Darkness. It took no more than a single teaser trailer for me to know that he was a serious actor who I was going to like in the long run. The following movies I have watched with him have only reaffirmed my first notion. So, with no further delay, here is his movie ranking.

10. Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch

I tried to watch this movie on Netflix. I only made it about fifteen minutes. And while Benedict Cumberbatch is a great voice actor he didn’t do that great of a job bringing life to the Grinch.

9. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

Christian Bale and Rohan Chand in Mowgli (2018)

Despite the fact that this movie is packed to the rafters with A-list stars lending their voices to this PG-13 rendition of The Jungle Book, I have tried to watch this movie three times and all three times I couldn’t make it halfway through the film.

8. Star Trek: Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

I loved the trailers, I wasn’t that much of a fan of the actual movie. Benedict Cumberbatch did a decent job playing Khan but unfortunately, I can’t remember much about him in the film.

7. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Martin Freeman in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)Benedict Cumberbatch did a great job lending his voicing talents to Smaug and The Necromancer. The movie itself has dwindled in quality over the years, becoming nothing more than a poorly CGI-ed finale to a story Peter Jackson clearly was ready to be over with.

6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Martin Freeman in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

It’s a decent film that was an okay beginning to an iconic story.

5. Doctor Strange

Benjamin Bratt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tilda Swinton, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (2016)

Did I ever think Benedict Cumberbatch could be a superhero? No, I didn’t, but Marvel made it work and boy did it pay off. Cumberbatch was absolutely the perfect person to play Doctor Stephen Strange and honestly, he’s become my favorite Marvel superhero.

4. Thor: Ragnarok

Jeff Goldblum, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Mark Ruffalo, Karl Urban, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Benedict Cumberbatch would go on to only play a tiny role in the grand scope of this film but he still did not disappoint. Yet, even without him, this movie still manages to shine in ways that the other two Thor films never could.

3. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Martin Freeman, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly, and Luke Evans in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

This movie will always have a special place in my heart because of the surprise I felt watching it the first time. The first Hobbit film was like I said before, okay, but this movie, this movie struck me in a way most movies have never been able to. The grandeur, the adventure, the action sequences, the incredible and mystical locations, all leading to Bilbo’s eventual confrontation with Smaug, was utterly fascinating from beginning to end.

I know this film so well I can recite it and even though I’m a little embarrassed about that fact it’s the truth. I enjoy this film that much…and mainly because of Smaug, voiced impeccably by Benedict Cumberbatch. I think it’s going to take a while before there is a dragon in cinema scarier than Smaug due greatly to Cumberbatch’s baritone portrayal of the fierce dragon. Wow, he did a great job!

2. Avengers: Endgame

Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Bradley Cooper, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Danai Gurira, and Karen Gillan in Avengers: Endgame (2019)

This movie is the highest-grossing film of all time for a reason. It’s a really good film with some of the most exhilarating moments I’ve been lucky enough to see in a packed movie theater. This film is, in essence, a love letter to the entire MCU and boy is it entertaining and emotional from beginning to end.

1. Avengers: Infinity War

Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Vin Diesel, Paul Bettany, Bradley Cooper, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Pratt, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Wong, Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, Dave Bautista, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Letitia Wright, and Tom Holland in Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

And of course, unsurprisingly, this is my favorite Benedict Cumberbatch movie.

  1. It’s my favorite movie in the MCU.
  2. Benedict Cumberbatch is at his best as Doctor Strange in this film. In fact, it’s this movie that made the red-cloaked sorcerer my favorite Marvel superhero.
  3. Thanos is at his best and when he’s at his best…just hang on for the ride.

I’m actually rather surprised. I did not realize that I’ve seen ten movies with Benedict Cumberbatch in it. Somehow I knew seven years ago when I saw him in Star Trek: Into Darkness, he would become an actor I’d know by name and I wasn’t wrong. 😊
