Awkwafina has become an incredible actress over the course of the last few years. The first film I ever saw her in was Ocean’s Eight where she melded into the background of all of the other Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning actresses that surrounded her. And then, last year, the buzz was intense about one of the best films of 2019, The Farewell, and her impressive performance in the movie. I watched the film for the first time yesterday and I have to say, it lived up to the hype. Here’s the film’s synopsis.
A Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies.
This movie was really engaging and at its heart lied Awkwafina who plays the film’s lead, Billi. She expressed every element an Oscar-nominated performance could deliver; the melodramatic expressions, the self-contained emotions when she had to keep her composure, the eventual bursting scene where she lets her emotions out, she did everything you’re supposed to do to get an Oscar nomination…and she wasn’t even afforded that. I’m flabbergasted.
She would win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy but she deserved more accolades for the work she did on this film. After watching this movie, however, I’m even more excited to know that she has a lead role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Marvel Studios continues to acquire actors that are not only famous (like Robert Redford and Michael Douglas) but actors who actually have won awards for their acting (like Oscar-winning actress, Brie Larson) and that’s what makes these films so much better than the likes of DC Comics’ movies…unfortunately.
If you have a chance to see The Farewell I suggest watching it. It’s currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and is well worth the look.
I’m giving this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and 95 out of 100. It was a movie I’ll most likely never forget.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a spectacular day.
