I saw Mission: Impossible-Fallout two years ago and I can tell you, it’s still blowing my mind. I’ve seen a LOT of action movies but I’ve never seen an action film quite like this before. It’s astounding to watch and an absolute treat. But this doesn’t dissuade from the other Mission: Impossible movies’ awesomeness. For over two decades Tom Cruise has taken the character, Ethan Hunt, to new locations, new heights (literally,) and new insane obstacles that seem, well, impossible to complete. And yet Ethan Hunt still finds ways to save the world, even if it comes at the last. Possible. Second. It’s the best!
But how do these films rank in this action-packed franchise? That’s what I’m here to share with you. Enjoy!
Mission: Impossible II
I watched Mission: Impossible II a few years ago and while it did possess one of Tom Cruise’s most jaw-dropping stunts in the franchise the movie was really, really bad. There was WAY too much slow-motion and a little bit too much smooching for my liking. It was so bad in fact that I’m kind of surprised they made a third Mission: Impossible film…but I’m glad they did. 🙂
Mission: Impossible III
I just watched Mission: Impossible III for the first time over the weekend (so I could get acquainted with Ethan Hunt’s backstory involving his wife) and I was a bit underwhelmed. It’s got next to zero thrilling Tom Cruise moments which is a little disappointing considering that it’s a Mission: Impossible movie. The story is easy to follow and at times can be a little boring but overall it wasn’t exactly a bad film. It just wasn’t as good as the others.
I saw Mission: Impossible for the first time after seeing Ghost Protocol. I had heard nothing but praise for the movie so I thought it was going to be just as awesome as the latest installments in the franchise. It isn’t. Mission: Impossible is a good action flick but it’s old and you can totally tell. Still, it was the beginning to this awesome franchise and for that reason alone I definitely appreciate it.
Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol
The sequence in Dubai alone is better than the first three Mission: Impossible films. Until recently I didn’t know that Tom Cruise actually climbed the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world.) Even though they were clearly showing him climbing the building I convinced myself that it had to be CGI because there was just no way he was actually performing that incredible stunt. Well, he did, and that is downright INCREDIBLE! This movie, at its release, was easily the best Mission: Impossible film in the franchise but, surprisingly, the movies got better.
Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation
Then came Rogue One which again raised the bar and took Tom Cruise’s stunts to a whole other level. In this movie, he holds onto the side of a plane, holds his breath underwater for three-six minutes, and drives a motorcycle at breakneck speeds. And it’s not just the awesome stunts that make this movie exciting but also the thrilling storyline as well. There are surprises left and right which all lead to a fascinating conclusion. This was clearly the best Mission: Impossible film at the time…until Fallout arrived.
In its goal to become the best installment in the franchise Mission: Impossible-Fallout doesn’t just surpass its predecessors by a landslide but it also ends up becoming one of the best action films ever conceived. From beginning to end this movie delivers a thrilling sequence after a thrilling sequence that’ll leave you watching the film in slack-jawed awe. It’s also incredible because Tom Cruise is nearly 60-years-old and yet he’s doing these ridiculously difficult stunts that no sane person would dare try. From the incredible skydiving scene to the helicopter sequence this movie just keeps making you happy over and over and over again.
It’s, to me, hands down the best action movie ever created. And that’s why it is clearly the best Mission: Impossible film so far.
So, this is my ranking of the Mission: Impossible movies so far. If the next installment in the franchise is better than Fallout it’s probably gonna win an Oscar for best picture. Lol. 🙂
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.
