Natasha Romanoff was at first shocked to see Nick Fury and Agent Hill but then a smile spread on her face. There was no reason to be surprised. This is how he and Hill always worked. They would find mysterious ways to always be one step ahead. In fact, seeing them was relieving.
“Director Fury, Agent Hill, what are you doing here?” Sharon Carter asked, her eyes wide in disbelief.
Nick Fury shrugged. “With a terrorist who used to work for HYDRA on the loose in Europe and you guys in desperate need of regrouping, I figured you all would probably come here.”
Sam and Natasha remained standing while Steve Rogers helped himself to the sofa as the Italian model hurriedly rose to stand alongside her elderly husband, giving him room to stretch out if need be. Steve took a deep breath as he regained his strength.
“And you know this place?” Steve asked Fury.
“I knew Peggy Carter, back when I first worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. She grew close to me and saw my potential. She even invited me here once to talk.” Nick Fury stood, walking over to the mantel whose fireplace was currently dormant. “Yeah, she was a nice lady.” He pointed at Steve. “I see why you liked her.”
Steve smiled. Sharon blushed. Hill seemed annoyed.
“I know it would be fun to talk about old times but we have a serious situation going on,” Hill said sternly.
“Look, it’s not that I’m not taking things seriously but look at them,” Fury replied. “They’ve obviously had a hard time. There’s no reason to rush them into this.”
“But with every second that passes more people die.”
“How bad is it?” Natasha interjected.
Hill sighed. “Europe is panicked. The eastern countries are falling like flies and now it seems this woman and her squad’s appetite is growing larger.”
“Intel has it that she’s heading for London next,” Fury seconded.
Sam cursed. Sharon gasped. Natasha crossed her arms. Steve leaned forward.
“You’re here for a reason, Nick,” Steve said. “What’s going on?”
Nick Fury was just about to speak when they heard a knock at the door. He smiled. “Perfect timing.”
Everyone’s attention turned as they heard the door open followed by Evan the Butler’s voice. Several seconds later there were footsteps and then Wanda appeared wearing an expression of surprise.
“Wow, everybody’s here,” Wanda said.
Steve smiled. “How was the trip?”
Wanda shrugged, throwing her backpack into the lap of a nearby armchair. “It was fine, besides having to find this place. The driver didn’t know where he was going.”
“It’s good to see you, Wanda,” Sam said.
“Good to see you too, Sam,” she responded.
“Wow,” Sharon’s grandfather suddenly spoke.
Their attention turned to him as he stood with his arm around his beautiful wife.
“Wow. I have nearly half The Avengers in my living room,” he seemed to realize in an instant, garnering the smiles of the fugitive heroes. “I have a feeling we’re out of our league here so we’re going to leave and give you some privacy.”
Sharon hugged her grandfather and his step-wife as they left the room before turning to look at the assembled heroes.
“So, this is happening,” she said.
“I haven’t seen this many Avengers in one spot since Ultron was raising hell,” Nick Fury commented.
“It is kinda nice isn’t it?” Sam said, nodding appreciatively.
Wanda crossed her arms. “So, what’s the plan? We’re all here. Are we trying to reminisce about old times or are we going to do something about this problem that’s happening in Europe?”
Steve Rogers nodded. “We’re ready to do what needs to be done to stop this threat but I’m hoping you may have an idea of who this Dr. Frost is.”
Nick Fury shook his head. “For once, I have nothing. It seems she was really deep within HYDRA and has now risen to the forefront now that her bosses are either dead or in prison.”
“What I can say we’ve learned is that her powers are not natural, meaning she’s not from another world like Thor or Loki,” Hill said. “Her abilities have been granted to her.”
“But who could’ve done this?” Natasha asked. “HYDRA.”
Hill shook her head. “I don’t think so. There’s something mysterious about her. That’s all I know for sure.”
Sharon was keeping quiet the whole time and Nick Fury noticed. “Is there something you want to say?” he spoke loudly.
Everyone looked at Sharon who seemed visibly distraught. Sharon sighed.
“I don’t like talking about this,” Sharon said.
Steve stood. “Talking about what?”
Sharon looked at him. “The woman, Dr. Frost,” her gaze turned to Nick Fury, “she’s my younger sister.”
Jaws dropped. Eyes widened. And muttered curses could be heard.
“Your sister?” Sam asked.
“You have a sister?” Steve asked.
Sharon nodded grimly. “Her name was Olivia Carter.” She turned away, walking over to one of the windows as a slight drizzle began to fall outside. “Growing up, there was this sense of pressure on us to live up to Peggy’s achievements. I, of course, wanted to work for S.H.I.E.L.D but Olivia always had a bad streak. One day when my sister was a teenager she ran away from home.
“My parents were devastated but they had to uphold the reputation of our family name. So, they let her go and told me never to speak about her. They were ashamed of her behavior and, well, they made me ashamed.” Sharon’s eyes shimmered. “Now look at what she’s become.”
Sharon’s head fell. Even though she felt like crying she kept her composure, choosing to take a deep breath instead. Steve managed to find the strength to stand and walk over to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. Her wet gaze turned to him.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
She smiled sadly. “Not all us Carters are good people.”
There was a bit of silence before Natasha spoke. “Sister or not, she has to be stopped.”
“And that’s why we’re here,” Hill said, standing to her feet. “We’ve come to help.”
