Captain America: Secret War (TWENTY-EIGHT)

The Ancient One sat in a room in the Wakandan palace meditating, the Time Stone within the Eye of Agamotto glowing as she concentrated deeply.

In her mind, she could see the future and what was at stake. It was terrifying but it wasn’t hopeless. Sarkras the Mindful was a formidable foe but there were ways of defeating him and those ways always included two very important heroes; Colonel Rhodes and Vision.

She knew she had to take action and soon. There was no time to waste.

Opening her eyes, she made a circular motion with her hand, creating the portal that would lead her to Vision’s whereabouts.

Walking through the gateway she found herself in a sparsely furnished room. She closed the portal and looked to her right just as the vibranium cyborg, Vision, walked into the room. He paused in his tracks, gazing at her with the alertness of an enhanced being, before darting toward her in a phase of golden light.

She let him grab her before placing her right index and middle fingers on his forehead. His eyes widened and he let her go, stepping away as if dazed.

“Who are you?” he finally asked after a moment.

“My true name is lost in the history of memory but I am now known as The Ancient One,” she told him.

“The Ancient One? I have no recollection of you.” He seemed taken aback as he seemed to truly notice her for the first time. “How is this possible?”

“I am practically invisible under a secret veil you have not known existed,” she continued. “A hidden guardian that protects the world from dark forces that threaten to destroy everything we have grown to love on a daily basis.”

“If you’re usually cloaked away in secrecy then why are you showing yourself to me now?” he asked, gazing at her suspiciously.

“The fate of the world is at stake and only you have the power to stop what could transpire.”

His expression remained stern. “Which is?”

“The end of the world as you know it.”

He turned his gaze away from her and it was almost as if The Ancient One could see the jumbled mess of thoughts scrambling around in his brain. She stepped forward.

“The world needs you. Wanda needs you.”

Vision’s gaze whipped to her when he heard Wanda’s name. He knew she had been captured and he wanted nothing else than to bust into whatever secret dungeon she was being held in and rescue her from harm. But he couldn’t. At least he thought he couldn’t…until now.

His temple knotted. “And why should I trust you?”

She smiled. “I cannot sway your thoughts but know this, your decision is in direct correlation with the fate of humanity.”

He nodded. His regular clothes dematerialized into his grey suit and his golden cape fell from his shoulders.

“Then I guess I have no choice,” he said grimly.

She smiled. “As do we all.”
