My Ten Favorite Movie Characters

I. Love. Movies! That’s been the tagline of my blog since its inception in December 2016. And what is the basis of a great movie? An awesome character.

Every movie’s driving force are the characters that lead the story to other dimensions and have you asking for more. If a movie is awful there’s a good chance that the main character probably annoyed the heck out of you. And if a movie is phenomenal it’s very likely that the film had some pretty fantastic characters involved.

Today, I will share a tentative list of my ten favorite movie characters of all time (tentative because it could change at any second) and in no particular order. So, here goes.

Harry Potter

Growing up, my first love wasn’t Star Wars, it was Harry Potter. There still hasn’t been quite as amazing a children’s fantasy story brought to the big screen as these movies and at its beating heart lies Harry Potter himself, perfectly portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe.

Since the shockingly young age of eleven he had to carry an entire franchise on his shoulders and he did his job swimmingly. Yes, he was a kid, but he was a brave kid tackling impossible odds in a terrifying world full of monsters, creepy wizards, and a particular revenge-stricken monster named Voldemort.

His story never grows weak, the plot only thickens, and by the end of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban alone, there’s no doubt in my mind that he is undoubtedly one of my favorite movie characters of all time.

Joe Gillis

I’ve just recently watched Sunset Blvd. which I feel, in my opinion, is the best written movie I’ve ever watched. Its screenplay is enchanting, its twists and turns unexpected, and it reads like a book being brought to life on the screen. It’s a magical script.

And at the center of this story lies the film’s primary protagonist, Joe Gillia, played by Hollywood legend, William Holden. He plays Gillis with just the right amount of droll humor and classic Hollywood charm that you can’t help being swept into this story along with this character and feel for him as the plot deepens.

Considering that this was the first movie I’d seen starring Holden he became an instant favorite actor of mine from the old days because he did such a remarkable job in this film.

V

Like The Mandalorian, V (played by Hugo Weaving) is a masked hero and also like The Mandalorian…he’s super cool! The best thing about the intriguing science-fiction flick, V for Vendetta is him. He steals the show in every scene with his presence and his faceless charm. And yeah, he kicks butt too.

I need a V Funko Pop.

Doctor Strange

I know this may seem hilarious and random but seriously, Doctor Strange is one of my favorite movie characters of all time and yeah, I have officially claimed him as my favorite superhero. I’m such a Doctor Strange fan I’ve never imagined dressing up as a male character for Halloween before but I’ll dress up as Doctor Strange in a heartbeat…minus the goatee of course. 😁

Rocky Balboa

Inspiration at its finest; Rocky follows the tale of a young Italian Philadelphian who yearns to become a boxing champion. What transpires is a tear-jerking love story that just so happens to be the most inspiring sports movie of all time. Plus, Sylvester Stallone would become an instant icon thanks to this movie and the perfectly written character he embodied: Rocky “Italian Stallion” Balboa.

Rocky is such an incredible character he has a statue in Philadelphia and Stallone is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Incredible!

Clarice Starling

I believe that Clarice Starling is the best-written heroine in a movie of all time. The film never strays from the idea that yes, she’s a woman, but it also perfectly highlights all of her strengths as a woman too.

Honestly, I’ve only seen this film twice and every time I watch it it’s like my mind purposely begins to erase the details of this movie because it is so…disturbing. But one thing I do remember…she’s one of my favorite movie characters.

The Joker

Like Batman, there have been a bunch of actors to portray the iconic comic book role of The Joker. It just so happens that Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance is not only hauntingly beautiful but thrillingly perfect. He made The Joker truly terrifying and a match that Batman couldn’t quite handle.

He’s become quite iconic over the years and rightfully so. He’s one of the best villains of all time. And he has one of my favorite movie quotes ever: “Madness is like gravity. All it takes is a little push.” *chills*

Ripley

Ripley is the best! She doesn’t take any you-know-what, she isn’t utilized as love interest bait or relegated to having an out-of-place romance with anyone, she’s just a bad***! She was great in ALIEN and of course she was even beter in ALIENS.

I love Ripley!!!

(SPOILERS for The Lion King AGEAD!)

Mufasa

Why is Mufasa on this list? Easy. He’s my favorite onscreen father of all time. He may not be in The Lion King long but he impacts the story heavily and yeah, I don’t think I’m ever going to get over his death.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Maximus

Russel Crowe is an amazing actor, pure and simple. He should’ve gotten a nomination for A Beautiful Mind but it went to Denzel Washington for Training Day instead. (😒) He did, however, win an Oscar for playing Maximus, a Roman-general-turned-gladiator. I. Love. Maximus!

He’s one of those characters that you can’t help liking instantly and as the movie progresses he becomes cooler and cooler and cooler until I’m practically bursting at the seams with adoration of the character.

Well…those are are my ten favorite movie characters. Of course, I’ll probably think of some other characters that forgot in the next hour but for now…this is the list.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.
