With Toy Story 4 becoming available to watch on Disney Plus I figured it’d be best to revisit my review of the film. Enjoy!

If you’ve checked to see what Toy Story 4‘s rating among critics has been and glimpsed the 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes or the 7.9 out of 10 scores on IMDb let me assure you, it deserves those ratings.

Toy Story 3 was supposedly the end of the franchise that had started in 1995 and it was a great story as it transitioned little Andy from childhood to adulthood and the imminent but bittersweet breakup between Andy and his favorite toys. It was a tear-inducing “finale” that ended up not only winning Best Animated Film but was only the second animated movie to also be nominated for Best Picture.

It was perfectly written, it told a concise story, and it left people happy. No one was clamoring for a sequel like we wished for a sequel to The Incredibles but we were given one anyway and it was worth the wait.

Toy Story 4 now focuses on the toys’ new owner, Bonnie. While going to kindergarten for the first time she makes herself a toy crafted out of your common spork and names him Forky. She immediately falls in love with the toy but here’s the thing, the spork’s only goal in life is to be used for food and then thrown in the trash, so to be created as a toy is practically a living nightmare for the spork. Let me assure you, it’s hilarious.

When the spork eventually manages to jump ship and get away on a road trip it’s up to Woody to bring him back home.

On the adventure, he runs into his old friend Bo Beep who is now a full-fledged warrior/survivor/awesome-toy-heroine. With her come new toys that join the adventure such as her lost-toy compatriot, Giggle McDimples (Ally Maki), retired stunt-toy, Duke Kaboom (Keanu Reeves), and there are two other new toys that end up on the adventure as well that bring pure comedy to the movie, Ducky and Bunny, voiced by the iconic comedy duo, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

Let me tell you right now. They are so funny they need their own movie. I would totally pay folding money for that.

But back to the movie at hand. The adventure, unsurprisingly, is filled with plenty of humor provided mainly by Forky (who is HILARIOUS for all of the reasons above) and Ducky and Bunny, some expected action, a tiny bit of horror which is also the classic Toy Story way, and the patented emotional moments that grow more and more sentimental until the next thing you know you’re in a puddle of your own tears.

My Conclusion of the Film

Toy Story 4 is a great movie that will please adults and children alike but it isn’t, personally, my favorite of the franchise simply because it almost feels like a broken record. The scenarios may be different, there will be new characters to enjoy, but every film’s goal is to try to make you cry and after a while, that can become boring. I could predict what was going to happen at the film’s conclusion in the first half of the movie so I wasn’t surprised.

And yeah I cried. Who wouldn’t? The movie got to my emotions, as it always manages to do, but Toy Story is and will always be the best one simply because it was the first. Nothing had been made like it before and it was amazing. These sequels are just well-written, not exactly necessary additions to a perfect story.

I’m giving this movie 93 out of 100 and 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was a good movie, no doubt, and I highly recommend it, but it didn’t blow my socks off, unfortunately.
