Disney Investor Day: ‘Star Wars’ Edition

Last night happened. What do I mean by that? It was the annual Disney Investor Day and this time, we got to share in the awesome proceedings. Last night during a streamable event, people were given the opportunity to see what’s coming new to theaters and its streaming services over the next few years. And to everyone’s great surprise, 10 Star Wars projects were announced among a bunch of other shocking and stunning news.

Three of the projects were expected: the Cassian Andor Disney+ series, the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, and the new animated series, The Bad Batch. However, it was the other seven announcements that shattered the internet and left my brain reeling with absolute shock. So, with that being said, let’s take a look at these new projects.

Aptly named Andor, this Disney+ series will feature a prequel story highlighting Cassian Andor as the Rebel spy we met at the beginning of Rogue One and his super-secret missions that I’m sure are filled with grit and lots and lots of casualties. Here’s a sizzle reel for the upcoming series.

I loved seeing the concept art. It seems like this show is going to be very intense and that’s what we should expect with a spy thriller created by the man who brought us The Bourne Identity.

The primary cast was also announced yesterday which I will share in another post but I can confirm that Genevieve O’Reilly will be reprising her role as Mon Mothma.

The series will most likely consist of only one season which will have twelve episodes and it will premiere in 2022.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is garnering more details as it moves along. Now we know the series will be set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and that Hayden Christensen will be returning to play the iconic villain, Darth Vader, for a “rematch of the century.” Heck yes!

The Bad Batch is an animated series that I have to admit, I wasn’t all that thrilled for but the first trailer was released last night and yeah, I enjoyed it. Here it is.

Fennec Shand returns for her animated debut in this series and I’m very intrigued to see what this show will mean to the entirety of the Star Wars story.

Now, up to the brand new projects.

We’ve got a couple of new projects that should be fun to watch.

Visions is a series of animated short films created by Japanese anime artists to bring a new look to the Star Wars universe. Whether these short films will feature the stories we already know or new stories created by these brilliant minds, Visions sounds like something I’m going to be really excited to see.

Also, we can expect another animated series called A Droid Story featuring a new droid going on a top-secret mission with C-3PO and R2-D2. That sounds silly and could be fun to watch.

Now, in terms of live-action series, there’s even more surprises coming our way.

Lando Calrissian will be getting his own Disney+ series, helmed by Dear White People‘s creator, Justin Simien. It wasn’t exactly confirmed that Donald Glover would be reprising the role but I figure the story will center around him as a younger Lando traipsing across the galaxy as the suave gambler/smuggler that he is.

Set in the final days of the High Republic era, we’re going to be delving into a mystery thriller created by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) which deals with dark secrets and the burgeoning rise of the dark side. I’m here for this!

Two spin-offs from The Mandalorian were also announced to arrive in the coming years.

Helmed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, these two new shows, built off of the story of The Mandalorian. The Ahsoka series will most likely feature the title on a quest to find Grand Admiral Thrawn, and hence Ezra Bridger. And this new series, Rangers of the New Republic, will feature a whole new story set in the timeline of The Mandalorian and will culminate into a “climactic story event.” Oh, snap!

But wait! That’s not all.

Patty Jenkins will create a movie focusing on fighter pilots on a high-octane adventure that will be sure to thrill audiences Christmas of 2023. And Taika Waititi is confirmed to be making a movie that will be “fresh…unexpected…and unique.” If Waititi’s films are anything to go by, this movie will be really funny and fun.

This is so much Star Wars and I just can’t handle the happiness. This is so awesome!

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a tremendous day. May the Force be with us!
