I don’t often think of watching foreign films but every now and then I come across a foreign film that strikes me right in the core with its brilliance. I don’t know why, but I woke up this morning thinking about the foreign films I’ve seen and so I decided to share my three favorite films.

3. Parasite

Parasite is full of deeper meanings but it’s bluntest statement is its striking storytelling. Parasite deserved to win Best Picture last year because it was different, it was unique, and it was memorable.

I’ve seen this movie twice now and my second viewing was better than my first, substantially. Suddenly, I was able to absorb the story as it unfolded and by the end, I felt like I had watched something truly worth seeing.

I will definitely watch it again in the future but if you haven’t seen it yet it’s totally worth a viewing.

2. Pan’s Labyrinth

A few weeks ago, my sister and I watched Pan’s Labyrinth for the first time and we were shocked, to say the least. The film is very fantastical with memorable fairy tale creatures and a young girl destined for greatness but it all plays against a fascist background that only dampens the magic into real world horror.

The film’s primary antagonist, the girl’s evil uncle, Vidal, is one of the worst villains I have ever seen in any movie. This movie is very rated R for its excessive violence and honestly, if you’re not into violent movies I would give this film a pass. The film doesn’t waste time letting you know this isn’t on the same par as The Lord of the Rings‘ level of gore.

Despite the horrific images seared into my brain or the disturbing subject material at times, Pan’s Labyrinth is the greatest fantasy film I’ve seen next to The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies. Guillermo del Toro, the writer/director of Pan’s Labyrinth, was meant to helm The Hobbit movies and honestly, I would’ve loved to see his vision but alas, we never will. Boo.

1. Hero

Have you seen Hero? Oh my goodness, if you haven’t please check it out. Hero is hands down the most beautiful movie I have ever seen in my life. It’s like art displayed on the big screen, giving way to a story that is also just as magnificent.

It’s written brilliantly, the choreography of the fight scenes are magical and breathtaking, and yeah, by the film’s conclusion it made me cry like a baby.

Hero is a must-watch and undoubtedly the greatest foreign movie I have ever seen. One day I will eventually have to watch Roma to see what that’s all about.
