So, following Disney’s failed attempt at making an epic conclusion to the Skywalker Saga, they decided to create a new era that they themselves could create and control called The High Republic. These stories are set 400 years before The Phantom Menace. 400 years before the return of the Sith…
This era is a time when the Jedi are at their most powerful and are seen as benevolent guardians of the galaxy.

It is during this time that their greatest foe are called the Nihil, a group of deadly mercenaries that are becoming a real threat to the galaxy. I haven’t personally read the stories or comics yet but just from what I’ve read it sounds like these Nihil fellas are quite ruthless and relentless.
The era and stories sound intriguing but there’s one major problem that has bugged me ever for months now and that is the name of the characters. Listen to these names; Orla Jareni, Lily Tora-Asi, Ram Jamoram, Leox Gyasi, Marchion Ro, Reath Silas, Bell Zettifar, Lula Talisola, Vernestra Rwoh, and Loden Greatstorm. These names, while decent, don’t sound like authentic Star Wars names to me.
Star Wars names roll off the tongue in distinct ways; Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Din Djarin, Ahsoka Tano, Hera Syndulla, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Luke Skywalker, Poe Dameron, Cara Dune, Leia Organa, Padme Amidala, etc.
These High Republic names just feel strange in my mouth. There are only a few High Republic names that have felt like authentic Star Wars names to me; Avar Kriss, Stellan Gios, Keeve Trennis, Sskeer, Burryaga, and Ty Yorrick. And heck, maybe it’s just me who thinks these names for these Jedi and characters are kind of lame but I’m willing to bet I’m not, that’s why I’m sharing my opinion with the rest of you.
What do you think? Do you like the names of these High Republic characters? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day. May the Force be with you.
Even here on earth, name trends come and go, and names from 200 years ago may sound odd to us. There’s not many people named Ichabod these day, or Ezekiel, or Hortense. I’ll assume it’s the same with the SW universe. But to be fair, there are some names that sound a little too normal–there’s a character named Douglas, and perhaps Lily isn’t Star Wars enough. But I don’t have a problem with the rest of them. And I think Lula Talisola is a lovely name, that seems to roll off the tongue.

Hi Annlyel, well I didn’t have a problem coming up with my Star Wars name. A few years ago I was approaching a landmark birthday and I felt a bit of disbelief at how old I was getting and in a fit of self pity I stumbled around my flat mumbling the word “fortieth” over and over. Each time I said the word I slowed it down and eventually it split into two syllables – “For” and “Tyeth” – and I said “I’m OLD, I can’t believe it’s my For Tyeth….I’m For Tyeth!” And I was christened ;D
I’m not sure about the names in the High Republic either but chances are, they are in jokes or vague tributes to people who work for Disney/Lucasfilm or the publishers of the books etc.
The character name Coleman Trebor for example, was a tribute to the special effects artist from the prequel trilogy named Robert Coleman.
