If you haven’t noticed there’s been a lot of redheads in movies lately. And I don’t mean natural gingers like Jessica Chastain or Amy Adams. I’m talking about actresses wearing red wigs to match their red-headed characters. It’s an interesting trend that has only grown since Aquaman introduced the fearsome warrior princess Mera (or as I like to call her, Warrior Ariel) to the superhero world.
And don’t even get me started about Serinda Swan’s nightmarish rendition of the red-haired Medusa on the awful ABC mini-series, Inhumans.
When it comes to female superheroes and red wigs there’s a quality grade to each hairstyle, and clearly Jean Grey, Mystique, Mera, and Black Widow sport the red-haired look in the best ways. So, on that note, let’s take a closer look at these hairstyles and determine who is Queen of the Red Wigs. Enjoy!
Mera
Mera made her debut in Justice League where she sported a more natural ginger look that gave her hair a realistic style.
She returned in Aquaman with her hair color at such a saturated, deep red that it was undoubtedly a wig. What made it worse, it made her feel a little unauthentic. As a woman, I love Mera’s character a lot for her fierceness, her no-nonsense attitude, and her sweet skills, but I am constantly distracted by that terrible bright red hair atop her head.
Hopefully, she returns in Aquaman 2 with a different red tone in her hair.
Mystique
Like Mera has deep red hair that clearly looks artificial but what makes Mys get away with it compared to Mera is that she is an alien and that it contrasts well against Mystique’s blue skin. But it definitely is a bit too bold for comfort.
Jean Grey
When Jean Grey made her return to the X-Men franchise in X-Men: Apocalypse she did so with a brand new style in tow but her classic red hair was still there. This is a beautiful natural red color that is totally believable and can almost convince you that Sophie Turner is an actual ginger, which of course she isn’t.
And even in Dark Phoenix, she’s still sporting a stunning red-hair look that is not only eye-catching but worth appreciating.
Black Widow
Black Widow’s introduction debuted with her having the longest hair of any of the Marvel films. The red color wasn’t as deep red as Mera or Mystique’s, making her seem a lot more realistic in the real world. With hints of a chestnut brown, her red hair stands out in a believable fashion, allowing her to stand head and shoulders above the competition.
And even her many other hairstyles each have the red-hair look but the colors are never too bold, thus preventing her from looking more like a clown than a world-class assassin.
Wanda Maximoff
Even Wanda Maximoff went for a reddish-brown look when she went undercover after she became a fugitive.
Of these superheroes who reigns supreme in the red hair department?
*drum roll*
Jean Grey Wins!

At first glance, I would’ve immediately said Black Widow but Jean Grey is clearly the winner. When I have to question whether or not she’s a real redhead it makes the character so much better and, hair-wise, authentic.
Who do you think is Queen of the Superhero Redheads? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.
I gotta go Widow. I don’t even like looking at Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey, although the fact that I hate the Mary Sue-ish character concept probably doesn’t help. She’s a male comic writer’s angst fetish character from a much older time, and most of the storylines making her the conspicuous center of male attention (Cyclops, Logan, Mags, or Xavier) are awful and yet keep getting recycled anyway. Aside from the Madeline Pryor thread, that is. Marvel is willing to acknowledge that she was Cable’s mother, but please don’t look too *points frantically behind you* OH MY STARS WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN THAT BE?! …What? Who’s Madeline Pryor? No one was there, your eyes must’ve been playing tricks on you. 😓

I don’t know anything about the X-Men comics and Jean’s role in them so…I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Lol. But yeah, just judging from the movies, I understand why you don’t like her.
