I like comedies. My favorite comedy that I’ve seen over a hundred times (and this is no exaggeration) is Rush Hour 2. My family and I watch every chance we get and we pretty much know every line in the movie. A good action comedy film can be so much fun but can have those exhilarating moments that you get with a classic action movie and Rush Hour 2 embodies that perfectly. My second favorite action comedy movie is now Tropic Thunder.

Starring the likes of Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. in a role that garnered him only his second Oscar nomination, Tropic Thunder is an insane plot that is written so hilariously, outrageously, and bluntly that it’s almost a miracle it was ever even made.

The film follows the story of a group of actors who are making this movie inspired by a Vietnam war veteran’s autobiography, Tropic Thunder, and when the director is close to getting his film canned he decides to take things to the extreme. The actors are given a script and dropped in the middle of Vietnam to be filmed but unbeknownst to the actors, they’re in a war zone of sorts.

What transpires is utter pandemonium with so much shocking humor that I just couldn’t stop giggling or downright guffawing. Each actor in this movie does so well with their role. There are two actors in particular that I would’ve never expected in this movie but they absolutely nailed their performances.

And Robert Downey Jr. was so perfect as Kirk Lazarus that honestly, despite loving him as Iron Man, this is my personal favorite role of his. I was never once offended by his wearing blackface or his portrayal of a black man because it was downright hilarious. Plus, in the context of the movie, it was totally legitimate and they never failed to address how awkward it was for this white man to be playing this African-American character.

All in all, Tropic Thunder is a must-watch if you’ve never seen it before. Now, granted, it is very much out there. It does not hold back literally from the opening sequence which had me clutching my stomach I was laughing so hard to the last. If you’re not into absurd humor, don’t watch this. If you like comedy in general, you’ll love this movie.

I’m giving Tropic Thunder 95 out of 100 and 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was honestly one of the best comedies I’ve ever seen and I’m so glad I sat down with my sister and watched it.
