Movie Review Flashback: ‘Fantastic Four’: More Like a Fantastic Disaster

I love superhero hero movies and I’ve seen a bunch of them. One such superhero flick that I hadn’t seen yet was the infamous reboot of Fantastic Four in 2015. You know, that movie that featured Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm three years before he would become iconic as Erik Killmonger, a role that much better suited him by the way.

I’ve got to say, I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of the movie. The plot was simple but effective, none of the characters were getting on my nerves, and when the moment finally arrived featuring Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm obtaining their powers I loved the horrific aspect of it. My eyes were wide and I was like, “This is actually pretty good.”

And then the final third of the film happened.

Have you ever seen a movie that completely derails toward the end of the film? Well, Fantastic Four is one of those films. The climax, featuring Doctor Doom who goes from legitimately frightening to unbelievably drab with a plot that makes no sense and wasn’t at all set up by the first two-thirds of the movie, is just…bad. The dialogue is ultra-corny, Miles Teller’s acting feels wooden, as if he knows he’s part of a project that’s going to hell, the fight is boring and has no wow factor whatsoever, and Doctor Doom just…dies. It was so underwhelming.

Oh, and the movie concludes with the four heroes trying to come up with the name for their superhero team which just so happens to turn off before Reed Richards can say the words, “Fantastic Four.” So cliche!

I’m so disappointed. I was really digging this movie and then it just had to fall into pieces in the last twenty minutes. *sigh*

I’m giving this movie 70 out of 100 and 2.5 out of 5 stars. It was totally B+ material but just got really, really bad.

Oh gosh, I hope Marvel Studios makes the Fantastic Four movie one of the best superhero origin stories ever.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

‘Life of Pi’ Is the Most Beautiful Movie I’ve Ever Seen

You see the title of this post? It’s not an exaggeration. Life of Pi, a film that was nominated for eleven Oscars, including Best Picture, and won four of them back in 2013, is undoubtedly the most beautiful and one of the most stirring films I have ever seen.

Before roughly about a week or two ago I had never heard of this film. I’ve never seen it on any lists for classics or movie buff essentials. I’ve never seen a single commercial for it or heard any chatter about it. And then one day I’m browsing through HBO Max and I stumble upon it. My sister and I saw the featured image for the film,

this, and immediately I said to myself, “I don’t want to watch that.” So we put it off, instead choosing to watch other great classics like Kramer vs. Kramer and The Green Mile. (By the way, The Green Mile freaked me out and made me utterly bawl my eyes out. Ugh, it hurt. Great movie. A+)

And then yesterday, instead of watching Citizen Kane which is another movie I know I’ve got to watch one day but I keep not getting the urge to, we decided to tackle Life of Pi because why not.

What transpired thereafter was two hours and seven minutes of me and my sister being utterly transfixed. From the opening minutes to the last, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee brings to life a story that feels like it’s right out of the pages of maybe one of the most transfixing children’s books ever written.

It’s Hump Day!

There are those days when my brain is buzzing with great content that I’m ready to share with you all…and then there are days like today. Slow, fuzzy hump days when an idea for a post just seems to be floating out of reach.

Because of that, I won’t be sharing a post that specifically has a theme. I’m just going to be sharing random stuff that has managed to put a smile on my face…and maybe it’ll put a smile on your face too.

Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe: from Worst to Best

I haven’t had the chance to update my ranking for the MCU but now, I can. And now that we have the shows this list doesn’t only include the movies but the shows too. Enjoy!

25. The Incredible Hulk

It’s still at the bottom of the list and most likely, always will.

24. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This movie has dropped down the ladder drastically over the years. As much as I loved the first film this movie just gets on my nerves, besides the fact that it’s gorgeous.

The Oscars Made History But They Still Didn’t Have the Guts To Go There

Well, I watched The Oscars last night and it was fun. The setting was gorgeous, the cameras used to broadcast movie’s greatest night of the year felt so immersive it almost looked like we were watching a movie, and making it personal by giving the viewer a bit of insight into the nominees was an inspired touch.

Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) had the most memorable speeches of the evening, cursing was rampant during an Oscar song game, Glenn Close did the ‘Da Butt’ dance on live television, and Frances McNormand howled to the rafters like a wolf.

The night was a win for people of color in a bunch of categories, with two Black women making history by winning an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the first time in the Academy’s 93-year history. And yet, at the end of the night, with only three categories left, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture, the night took a sharp left turn.

I Owe ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ An Apology

When I first watched Godzilla vs. Kong a little over three weeks ago I watched it on my trusty Chromebook and ultimately wasn’t a fan. Hong Kong’s destruction felt unnecessary to me, the human characters irked me to death, and it just didn’t live up to the hype. Now, three weeks later, I watched this film again with my family on my nice television and it was like night and day!

Yes, the humans were still kind of irking but I found myself staring at the screen in wide-eyed shock as Adam Wingard took us on a directorial spectacle that I could only imagine to be absolutely phenomenal in IMAX. And the sound! Wow. You could feel the power of these enormous monsters.

When the movie ended I decided to immediately write a post sharing my newfound thoughts on the film because Godzilla vs. Kong is actually kind of fantastic. In fact, I may even like it a little more than Godzilla: King of the Monsters which previously held on to the title of best Monsterverse film with a Godzilla-grip.

Nowadays, well, Godzilla vs. Kong is actually kind of epic and I’m not ashamed to admit that my previous review was definitely misguided.

Now, I do stick to the fact that this movie’s storyline is very weak, otherwise I would’ve enjoyed it on the Chromebook. But the spectacle is undeniable and a true masterpiece for the monster movie genre. Let’s hope the success of this film makes Warner Bros. want to continue these movies because I honestly need more.

With this rewatch I will now give this movie a solid B+. My last score was C- so yeah…watching it on the television was a major upgrade. Lol.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.
