It’s time to talk about some scary antagonists. Enjoy!
5. Jack Nicholson in The Shining
The Shining is a disturbing movie, through and through, and Jack Nicholson’s performance as the crazed father/eventual ax murderer is legendary. He doesn’t have a horrifying mask or a terrifying makeup job to make him scary. He’s just scary by himself with those arched eyebrows and that horrifying face. I watched this movie in complete horror and it wasn’t because of anyone except for Jack Nicholson (and the twins but that’s another story.) He’s definitely one of the scariest villains I have ever seen.
4. Voldemort
Harry Potter is a film adapted from a children’s book yet the villains in the Harry Potter films are never unfrightening. From the Dementors to the professor who turned into a werewolf (that scared me to death when I was a child by the way) there is always something going on in Harry Potter that’s just disturbingly scary. And Voldemort is the ringleader of them all.
Ever since I was a child Voldemort has scared me to death…and he still frightens me in fact. If I had a choice to go into any movie world I would never want to go into the land of Harry Potter because there are just too many terrifying things there. And if I ever saw Voldemort face to face I would probably pass out from fright. Voldemort is terrifying.
3. The Joker
The Dark Knight is an absolutely fantastic movie and one of the reasons why is because Batman’s adversary is so frightening. The Joker in The Dark Knight was cunning and ruthless. He outfoxed Batman left and right, he killed the woman Bruce Wayne loved the most, and he still never died in the film. That’s a villain for you.
He’s also simply horrifying to look at. I mean look at this picture. *shiver* The Joker is just scary…simple as that. He’s undoubtedly the second scariest villain I’ve ever seen in a film.
2. Michael Meyers
Halloween is iconic because Michael Meyers is horror incarnate. But what makes him even more terrifying is that he is very believable because he is nothing more than a psycopath who escaped from his mental institution and is now on the hunt for his sister…on Halloween! It’s terrifying and totally believable, which makes him really scary.
The supernatural aspect of him in Halloween II pushed the boundaries of belief but he’s still terrifying as crap!
1. Anton Chigurh
And then there is Anton Chigurh, the man I have nicknamed “The Scary Man” because he is that scary to me. He’s the primary antagonist of Best Picture-winning film No Country For Old Men and to me, he’s worth keeping the lights on at night for.
I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the hair, or maybe it’s his voice, but this man makes sleeping a chore.
Who do you think is the scariest villain? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Javier Bardem in “No Country for Old Men” is pure unadulterated evil. I can’t imagine being alone in a room with him. On the other hand, Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” is just a nut case gone wild. You can see the beginnings of that persona in “Five Easy Pieces”. Nurse Ratchett should lost the key. As for the other three characters in the article, well . . . . . who can take seriously men who go around wearing make up or weird masks?

Chigurh is such evil and I’m absolutely petrified of him. To the degree that his character made me dislike the movie…purely because I hated him.
