My Thoughts on ‘The Suicide Squad’

Years ago I expressed my thoughts in my review of Suicide Squad where I pointed out that the next lame entry in the DCEU was a failed attempt at trying to recapture the magic of Guardians of the Galaxy. I even stated that James Gunn should be hired to remake the film considering that he has a knack for bringing wacky comic book superheroes (or in this case, antiheroes) to life.

Well, he was hired to create a reboot called The Suicide Squad and after two trailers my interest in this movie has plummeted severely.

There’s a lot of things wrong with this movie already but let’s start with the obvious; the jokes. James Gunn was canceled a few years back because some old tweets featuring him joking about pedophilia and rape were found.

Marvel Studios briefly fired him and then brought him back. In the time that he was fired DC Comics ran at him for the opportunity to direct The Suicide Squad.

This film, being rated R, is allowing Gunn to truly showcase his wackiness, or more nicely put in the trailer, his “horribly beautiful mind” and I’m not a fan.

The jokes are not funny and yes, a little more than a bit perverted. I mean, am I supposed to laugh at the idea of that dumb-looking Weasel thing killing 27 children? That’s horrific! Or John Cena wondering if the term Starfish is referring to a butthole? Is that supposed to make me fall back in my chair and guffaw?

Taika Waititi did the same thing in Thor: Ragnarok when he called the biggest gateway in Sakaar that Thor and co. had to travel through the “Devil’s Anus” but it was actually funny. The Suicide Squad‘s jokes are very, very cringe and that’s already a no-no.

Secondly, the one bright spot of Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey was Harley Quinn. Despite those two films being pretty lame she was always a reliably likable element of each movie with her classic humor and butt-kicking skills. And then there’s Gunn’s interpretation of her…

The Suicide Squad Trailer: They're Dying to Save the World – /Film

Harley Quinn is a bit daffy at times and very eccentric but at the end of the day she’s still smart, in her own way. Gunn has turned her into a laughing stock. A pretty (loopy) dame who looks nice in red and spews bad jokes about using the bathroom or killing someone with a bad driver’s license.

This isn’t the Harley Quinn that I know! Yeah, she’s insane like the Joker but isn’t the Joker one of the smartest and most cunning comic book villains of all time? Harley Quinn is just as deviously lovable but Gunn is turning her into a laughing stock and I am NOT happy about it.

That’s not the only thing wrong this trailer. Far from it.

In fact, the worst thing about this movie is that I literally don’t like any of the characters in this film. John Cena’s Peacemaker is already driving me batty. Idris Elba’s Bloodsport has the exact same storyline as Will Smith’s Deadshot (but I liked Deadshot better.) And then there’s everybody else. And I don’t know who this King Shark character is but I’m not a fan.

All in all, I may or may not watch this movie in August on HBO Max. It’s really going to come down to its Rotten Tomatoes score.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.

    1. She kind of did with…Birds of Prey. But then it got overcrowded by a writer who decided to make it a huge girl power moment by bringing in all of these other characters and not committing to just making an awesome Harley Quinn movie.

      It’s a shame.
