Ranking the Romantic Moments in the MCU: From Worst to Best

I’ve already written this post for the Star Wars franchise (Ranking the Romantic Moments in ‘Star Wars’: From Worst to Best) so…well, I felt like I had to write this post for the MCU…especially after that Loki finale. So, here goes nothing.

(This will not include EVERY romantic moment in the MCU nor will it feature The Incredible Hulk.)

24. Jane Foster Kisses Thor Too Hard

Natalie Portman will play Thor in 'Thor: Love and Thunder.' Here's how it happened in the Marvel comics - Deseret News

The romance in Marvel varies from great and well-established to sometimes awkward and icky and the first two Thor movies feature the ickiest romantic storyline in the MCU.

Jane Foster’s infatuation with Thor was cute…until that kiss. It was so unnecessary and so gross-looking I’ve only seen it twice even though I’ve watched the movie maybe four or five times.

In fact, I think that kiss contributed to Hemsworth’s wife standing in for his kissing scenes in Thor: The Dark World to be honest.

23. Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter Share That One Kiss…

Marvel's Sharon Carter On Captain America: Civil War's Controversial Kiss - CINEMABLEND

Yeah, this was awkward in 2016 and it’s even more awkward now. I get it. It was time for Steve Rogers to move on and get himself a girlfriend but…did it have to be Peggy’s grand-niece? Yeesh.

22. Natasha and Bruce Banner Get Intimate

The Best Black Widow And Hulk Scenes In The MCU Ranked

Back in 2014-15 I was one of those people who was a total Captain America/Black Widow shipper after their relationship in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I saw them as the perfect couple; two pretty superheroes who just looked good together.

So imagine my shock (and major disappointment) when I watched Age of Ultron and realized that Black Widow was flirting with Bruce Banner! I screamed an internal “WHAT!” at the movie theater screen.

When this scene happened, I was staring at the screen in muted disgust. (I honestly never wanted to see Bruce Banner fresh out of the shower with his shirt off.😖) And while the scene thankfully diverged from anything pushing the boundaries of the PG-13 rating and actually introduced a very interesting and tragic element to Black Widow’s story, I always skip this scene whenever I watch Age of Ultron.

21. Peter Parker Asks Liz Out

After 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' — What's Next for Laura Harrier's Liz Allan? | Geeks

Spider-Man: Far from Home is the better MCU Spider-Man movie for many reasons and one of those reasons is that I just didn’t like Peter’s crush on Liz. The chemistry between them felt forced and Liz just didn’t seem like the type of girl who would go to the prom with a boy like Peter Parker.

So this little scene when he asks her to the prom is a bit annoying, if I’m being honest, and I always ignore it whenever I’m watching the movie.

20. The Christmas Fireworks

Caitlin Moseley (caitlinm1025) - Profile | Pinterest

Tony Stark isn’t the easiest guy to fall in love with and Iron Man 3 proves that when Pepper Potts gets captured by The Mandarin and then is tortured within an inch of her life, falls 200 feet to her “death”, only to turn into a glowering fire lady.

After nearly losing her, Tony decides to destroy all his suits in glorious fashion by having them explode into fireworks. It’s a beautiful Christmas Eve moment for the two of them but the movie is just so boring that it’s ultimately quite forgettable.

19. Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne Sneak a Kiss

Ant-Man & The Wasp Kiss Scene - Ant-Man (2015) Movie Clip HD - YouTube

Marvel usually likes to build the connection between a potential couple for a movie or two but Ant-Man concluded the sexual tension between Scott and Hope quickly with a kiss.

It’s more of a funny moment than romantic as Hank Pym discovers them and you can just tell he instantly wants to scrub his brain of the sight.

18. Tony and Pepper Kiss for the First Time

When did Tony Stark and Pepper Potts start dating officially? - Quora

It was bound to happen. It was just a matter of when. Of course, like most movies, Tony and Pepper finally get their long-awaited smooch at the end of Iron Man 2. The moment is hilariously ruined though by Rhodey who picks on them and then tells them to get a roof! Lol.

16. Thor Tells Jane Foster About Asgard

In Thor, are the nine realms just different planets, planet systems? What are they exactly? - Quora

Before that icky kiss toward the end of Thor that ruined the romance blossoming between him and Jane, the outcast Asgardian prince and scientist Earthling were actually so cute together. Her awkwardness whenever he so much as looked at her was cute and this scene where he tells her about Asgard by the light of a campfire is as heartwarmingly romantic as it gets.

18. Black Widow Kisses Bruce Banner

NATASHA ROMANOFF (BLACK WIDOW) KISSES BRUCE BANNER (HULK) - YouTube

Like I said earlier, I was a Cap/Widow shipper but Age of Ultron put that in flames. The best part about that time when Black Widow kissed Bruce Banner (yes, that happened) was when she pushed him off the edge. That was kind of hilarious.

But honestly, considering their storylines I’m kind of happy Natasha chose to love Bruce Banner.

15. Peter Parker and MJ Are the Cutest Flirters

Peter Parker and MJ are as awkward as they come so when they finally try to compliment each other and get close…romantically, it’s the cutest thing. Nick Fury, however, is the star of this scene as he butts in on their moment.

14. Tony and Pepper’s First Dance

Pepper/Tony vid - Iron Man - Swayin' to the Music - YouTube

Tony Stark was your typical rich playboy but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have eyes for Pepper Potts, his secretary who was always there to help him for his various situations. However, at a function, the future husband-and-wife have their first dance and it is such a cute moment, especially seeing how uncomfortable Pepper is.

13. Wanda and Vision Are Officially a Couple

Infinity War was a major milestone in many of the characters’ stories but for Wanda and Vision, their love story was at the center of the conflict. It was exciting see the two Avengers finally together but it wasn’t exactly something I was that invested in. At least…not yet.

12. That Moment When Vision and Wanda Began To Like Each Other

Wanda and Vision in Civil War | Marvel superheroes, Scarlet witch, Wanda and vision

I had never read the comics nor did I know that Wanda and Vision are one of the most prominent couples in the MCU…and yet, I felt a connection between them in Age of Ultron. It was fleeting but it was there. So imagine my elation when this scene happened in Captain America: Civil War.

It validated my gut feeling and I was just so excited. Now I watch this scene and am still a little taken aback by the intense affection in Vision’s eyes at that moment. 👀

11. Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter Share a Car Ride

Living Between WednesdaysLiving Between Wednesdays

Steve Rogers was so cute and awkward around women before the serum, making this scene with Peggy as they essentially ride to his destiny so sweet. I think another reason why I love this scene is because shows that Peggy liked him even before he got injected with the serum. It’s just such a sweet scene.

10. “I Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”

It took years for Peter Quill and Gamora to officially become a couple but Quill definitely tried to become a little more than friendly with her at the get-go in Guardians of the Galaxy. This scene is beautiful visually, the song chosen for the moment between the two characters, and it’s perfect because they actually didn’t kiss. Which I appreciate. (It would’ve been way too fast.)

9. Loki and Sylvie Hold Hands

If you had told me a few months ago that Loki would turn out to be a fancy love story I wouldn’t have believed it but…here we are. The moment when Loki and Sylvie have their nexus event on Lamentis-1 doesn’t seem like that big of a deal…until you remember that Loki doesn’t get close to anyone! Hence its high spot on this list.

8. Peggy Carter Kisses Steve Rogers

Captain America Has Children in Comics and Animation | CBR

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter are probably my favorite couple in the MCU and this quick smooch delivered in a fast-moving car at the cusp of one of the most important missions any Avenger could ever undertake is epic. It could be deemed cheesy but I think the moment is just *chef’s kiss*

7. “I love you more than anything.”

Katie 😈 on Twitter: "Thanos brings Gamora back to his throne room (a room Gamora saw often as a child) and again, they're sounded by darkness with only the smallest hints of

Did I expect Infinity War to shatter my emotions thanks to Peter Quill and Gamora? No, I didn’t, but it did. For a couple of movies there was always this will they-won’t they thing happening between them but that finally ended in Infinity War only for Thanos to ruin everything.

To know that, essentially, this is the last time they would ever see each other is so sad! And to hear Gamora say to Quill, “I love you more than anything” is just…my heart’s shattering. Geez. It’s a sad moment.

6. Their (Last?) Goodbye

solci lvs jude 🐉 on Twitter: "SPOILER #WandaVisionFinale . . . . . . Cómo me recupero de esto? "you, vision, you are a piece of the mind stone that lives in

Wanda and Vision have had one of the most interesting love stories that I’ve ever witnessed. It’s developed in such a way over the years and its “conclusion” in WandaVision is sad but beautiful. Specifically when Wanda tells Vision, “You are a body of blood and wires and bones that I made. You are my sadness, and my hope. But mostly you’re my love.” Cue the tears.

5. The Most Awkward Scene in the MCU

You know those romantic scenes that are just hard to watch. This is one of them. The awkward flirtation between Loki and Sylvie as they navigate their feelings and their mission while eventually snuggling together in a blanket that’s not that “snuggly” is just awkward love incarnate. It’s hilariously uncomfortable to watch and is now a bit heartbreaking after seeing the finale…actually.

4. Vision’s Death

While I’ve never been as invested in Wanda and Vision’s love story as Tony/Pepper or Steve/Peggy’s relationships it doesn’t make this scene any easier to watch. Especially after watching WandaVision and truly comprehending how much he meant her and how much it hurt her having to kill him. Once again, cue the tears.

3. Peter and MJ’s Awkward First Kiss

Peter & MJ Kiss Scene" - [Spider-Man:Far From Home] (HD) - YouTube
That filter is so cute.

Okay, I know this is going to sound cheesy but I always get a little emotional during this scene. Maybe it’s the music but whenever I watch this it manages to grasp my heartstrings and hasn’t let go yet. I just think Peter and MJ are soooo cute and this moment touches me every time. I love them so much and I hope we have plenty of other movies with the two of them like Tony and Pepper.

2. Yeah, THAT Happened

One thing Marvel Studios has been lately is patient. If characters are going to end up romantically involved it takes a couple of movies before things are official so I don’t think anyone actually expected Loki and Sylvie to kiss in this first season. I know I sure didn’t…and I was acknowledging how quickly their feelings seemed to be escalating for one another.

This scene is not only one of the most emotional moments in the MCU but the fact that it concludes in a kiss and then an instant betrayal is next-level rewarding. Leave it to Loki to have the most compelling love story in the MCU.

Plus, if a romantic moment can turn your face into the shocked emoji you know it’s left an impact.

And 1. Steve and Peggy Get Their Dance

There’s nothing better than this scene when it comes to romantic moments. Steve Rogers and Peggy always had my favorite love story but it concluded so tragically for the both of them in The First Avenger. For Endgame to literally end with them finally getting that dance made (and still makes) me cry. It’s a beautiful and fitting ending to Captain America’s storyline.

So, there’s my list. What’s your favorite romantic moment in the MCU? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.

  1. In some ways, it’s kind of funny, because there just aren’t that many romantic setups in these movies at all. This whole list is like… four or five couples and/or main characters who are even slotted into any romantic subplots at all.

What, no awkward Bucky-with-the-barmaid train wreck? 😛

    1. Ha-ha! Well, that didn’t really lead to anything so…no. But that could’ve been an honorable mention. Lol.

And yeah, Marvel isn’t heavy on the romantic side. On the other hand, Star Wars is all about love stories. Even Obi-Wan got one!

  2. I love the Loki and Sylvie thing that’s going on, but I think Tony and Pepper have the realest relationship out of all of them. They bicker and fight but still love each other at the end of the day, they’re together for the long haul, they have a child. I love romance, but their relationship goes beyond that to something real. Which is saying a lot for these kinds of movies, lol. Great list!

      1. Yeah. 😦 Well, now that there’s a multiverse, maybe in one of them she has her dad. Not that I need to see that or see Tony Stark come back; I think you’re right when you said to not resurrect him. He had a meaningful arc, and it should be left alone.
