I knew it. I knew since the first teaser that The Suicide Squad was going to be a bad movie and sure enough, my gut proved to be right.
James Gunn is looking like a one-hit wonder at this point because his last two movies have just not done it for me. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could’ve easily been better than the first one but its chaotic storytelling, excessive hollering, and attempt at a heartfelt moment with Yondu even though they didn’t share much screentime together in the actual film just left me feeling deflated. And The Suicide Squad suffers because it’s boring!
Yes, The Suicide Squad is boring. I didn’t think that would be my response to this movie which, helmed by James Gunn, seemed like it could be a wild ride, but it was. The first ten minutes of the movie are very shocking and it really slaps you in the face on what type of movie this is. The last twenty minutes are the film’s best for sure but combine that and that’s only thirty minutes of the movie’s entire two-hour and thirteen minute runtime. So…imagine the rest of that film!
The movie drags along with a storyline that just never seems very interesting. Most of the characters are unlikable–I found myself only really caring about Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and the Ratcatcher girl. John Cena’s Peacemaker is terrible and I can’t believe he’s getting his own series on HBO Max. The action isn’t that good and the violence is ridiculously unnecessary. The humor was bland and I barely even chuckled. The soundtrack is boring and I can’t remember a single song from the film. And the color scheme of the film just felt weird. But, I will say that Starro the Conqueror is probably the best villain in the DCEU so far.
All in all, avoid this one. It’s not worth it.
I’ll give this movie 71 out of 100 and 2 out of 5 stars.

Have to agree. Starro looked to me like a 1970’s Godzilla movie monster. The movie was ok, but I’m glad I saw on HBO max for free. Really starting to question reviews I read. I don’t know what’s next I big releases, but with movie quality what it is? You won’t see me in a theater anytime doin

I liked it just enough to say it was worth seeing. I was really glad they went all the way with Starro, including the bright coloring. His powers were really cool and different and the sympathetic backstory they gave him made him interesting. I wasn’t crazy about all the extreme violence. This movie is a good argument for PG-13 because when filmmakers can’t get away with shock value, they’re forced to think of more clever ways to entertain the audience. I actually liked Peacemaker a lot. He had very plausible motivations for the conflicts he got into with the other characters. And Cena seemed to be a perfect casting choice. King Shark was pretty funny to me. Harley, I thought was more entertaining in Birds of Prey than she was here. She veered into generic dumb blonde territory here. I thought Bloodsport was very weak as the presumptive lead character. He didn’t seem to have the motivation or the personality quirks that the other characters did.
Ultimately, I think WB has shied away from a Harley/Joker Mad Love movie, first by dicing up their scenes in Suicide Squad, and I don’t know why. They don’t understand how iconic that relationship is. They’re asking people to watch Harley on her own without ever fully developing her origin and relationship with the Joker first. They asked people to carry in what they know about Harley and Joker from the comics, but that doesn’t work for general audiences. Harley being emancipated would carry more weight if the audience understood how extreme and intense that relationship with the Joker was first.
