I Watched ‘King Richard’ and I Cried a Lot

Serena and Venus Williams are not only some of the greatest athletes of all time but their story is so inspiring. And this movie, King Richard, is the story of how these two African-American girls would be crafted into tennis legends.

The film is as sentimental as it gets, resulting in my uncooperative tears every couple of scenes, literally. Will Smith does an absolutely incredible job morphing into Richard Williams. You can feel him really embracing the role and sinking into his acting chops that he hasn’t been able to use for over a decade.

King Richard movie review & film summary (2021) | Roger Ebert

This film will undoubtedly award him his third Oscar nomination but with Benedict Cumberbatch getting so many rave reviews for his work in The Power of the Dog I don’t know if he will win. Beyond the Oscar talk, this story is actually surprisingly well-crafted. It felt like a real story and even though it could be viewed as cheesy or predictable the emotion really came through.

King Richard will be nominated for Best Picture, or at least it should be, and even though it won’t win I’m relieved to say it’s a good film that will undoubtedly lift your spirits.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.
