Superhero Women vs. ‘Star Wars’ Women: Who Is Greater?

In the past decade there has been a steady positive increase in the way women are portrayed through movies and television and last year the three highest grossing films were all led by women; Emma Watson’s Beauty and the Beast, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That’s a powerful realization when just a few years ago men still highly dominated the blockbuster realm. Movies, and television shows, today are showing women not as damsels in distress but instead as complicated, strong women who don’t need men to dictate their every action or sway their minds. That’s pretty great. And the trend is only continuing. Next year we’re getting an all-female Ocean’s film (awesome) among many other movies undoubtedly helmed by incredible women.

So today, in honor of all of the powerful ladies of cinema, I’m going to compare five magnificent female superheroes against Star Wars’ five greatest heroines. Enjoy!

Scarlet Witch vs. Jyn Erso

I like Scarlet Witch a lot. I’ve liked her since Avengers: Age of Ultron. She’s extraordianarily powerful, she has a cool outfit, and she is a strong character. Unfortunately she’s surrounded by so many more important characters that her story usually is more of an afterthought than the main focus of the movies and so she hasn’t been given the chance to shine yet. Hopefully, in Avengers: Infinity War, she’ll have an actual story in the movie and won’t be used as only a vessel for romance in the film.

Jyn is feisty, strong, she says whatever is on her mind, and she is not afraid of anything. I would say she’s an impeccable heroine. Her role in Rogue One was also fantastic because it never felt obvious that she was the only woman in the movie, besides Mon Mothma and the Leia cameo, because she was such a leader. She helped orchestrate one of the greatest victories the Rebellion ever had and that’s very impressive. She’s also awesome because she has such a rough look.

She never once tries to make herself look good. Her hair is messily tied, her skin is dirty, and her clothes aren’t worn to flatter. I think that’s my favorite thing about Jyn and it’s important for little girls to see a heroine who’s just as tough, or tougher, than the men she’s around.

I love Scarlet Witch but because she hasn’t really been given a story yet Jyn obviously wins this round.

Should Rey and Poe Have A Romance in ‘Episode IX’?

The Last Jedi came out nearly a month ago and while us Star Wars fans still have a lot of questions concerning this long-awaited sequel we also have a few questions leading into Episode IX and one of those questions is whether Rey and Poe might end up having a romantic relationship in the final movie of the trilogy?

The reason for this question is because of the brief exchange between Rey and Poe at the end of the movie. Now for me, I didn’t see anything between the two characters as they introduced themselves that sparked my future-couple spidey sense but a lot of people are wondering if they might end up becoming something more than just rebellion buddies. Personally, I think having them become a couple would be a terrible idea for several reasons.

One, Rey is just too awesome for Poe (sorry Poe.)

I mean she’s this super powerful force-wielder (I don’t know if I can officially call her a Jedi yet) whose ideas and goals simply far exceed his. And yes she’s much more powerful than the likes of Finn but she began her incredible journey with the ex-stormtrooper before she even knew she had the Force. And they had a lot in common. They were two young, alone individuals who were trying to find their way in the universe. The thought of Rey and Poe being together is about as icky as when Black Widow and The Hulk started having a romance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The second reason they shouldn’t be together is because it would be highly sexist.

Rey is a very, strong independent character. She isn’t in the movies because she’s a love interest. She’s in the movies because she has a story that’s important and doesn’t exactly need the assistance of men. And yes she has feelings for Finn and even Kylo Ren but it’s not as if her only role in the films is to aid in the romantic aspect of the movies.

Now, due to the way things shook out in The Last Jedi, her relationship status at the moment is kind of in the air. Finn has possibly become fully invested, romantically, in his new friend, Rose and Kylo Ren is an evil monster who can’t see beyond his hate, thus he and Rey are now mortal enemies but just because the two men she likes might not be into her anymore doesn’t mean she has to resort to the next best guy which, in that case, would be Finn’s best friend, Poe Dameron. And yes, Poe is a very charming and handsome man but come on. Is it really so important for her to be in a romantic relationship that they would force a strange and very unrealistic romance between her and the dashing pilot? I don’t think so.

Third, it wouldn’t help Poe’s story at all either.

Poe is awesome, there’s no doubt about that, but the very concept of him ending up with a potential Jedi just does not match his character nor his story line. He’s a man with little patience, as was advertised heavily in The Last Jedi. He acts brashly and makes his decisions quickly with no thought of the consequences. Do you really think a man like that could even have a romantic relationship with a Jedi? I don’t think so.

And how would it possibly aid his story? The next time we see him he’ll probably the new General of the Resistance which means he’ll be way too busy to try to keep up with Rey. I mean Leia couldn’t even find time for her own son. But Poe will be so in love with Rey that he’ll make their relationship work? *rolling my eyes* Okay.

All in all, it would just be a very terrible idea if J.J Abrams decides to take that route for both of these characters. Even Daisy Ridley basically said in an interview the other day that she doesn’t want to see Rey in a romantic relationship with Poe. It would be unrealistic, kind of gross, and it would highly undermine her awesomeness.

Now I’m not saying I don’t want her to have a romantic relationship in Episode IX. I’m a big fan of love stories in movies, especially Star Wars films. I just don’t want it to be with Poe. *shudder*

Well, I thank you for reading my opinion about this interesting subject and I hope you have a glorious day. May the Force Be With You.

The Greatest Duos in ‘Star Wars’

Star Wars is packed full of incredible characters throughout all of its nine films and while most of the characters usually head on their own path some of these lovable individuals end up becoming remarkable teams that have become iconic in film history. And so today I’m going to talk about the duos in Star Wars that have always brought a smile to my face and made the movies that much better. Enjoy!

Finn and Rose

The latest installment in this nine film-and-counting franchise, The Last Jedi, brought a new character to the Star Wars universe, the adorable Rose Tico, and placed her alongside the lovable Finn throughout the entire movie, immediately making them one of the greatest and cutest duos in Star Wars so far.

One of my favorite scenes in The Last Jedi was when Rose first meets Finn.

Not only is it one of the funniest scenes in the movie but we get to see how Finn has really become the “big deal” that he lied and said he was in The Force Awakens due to Rose gushing over him when she first meets him. She soon realizes that Finn was actually trying to desert and that’s when we get to see that her character isn’t one to be trifled with which I love. As she’s taking the stunned Finn to her superiors it immediately establishes the chemistry between the two characters as they realize what they must do at the same time to fix the hyperspace tracking situation. From thereon they partake in a daring mission that strengthens their friendship and highlights how great of a team they really are. And thanks to Rian Johnson not killing Rose after she saved Finn from committing suicide to save the Resistance I’m sure the two will have many more exciting adventures together and I can’t wait to see them.

The Major Battles in ‘Star Wars’; Ranked from Worst to Best

Star Wars is full of action, whether it’s in space or on the surface of planets. I mean the first ever Star Wars movie ever made (A New Hope) started with a space battle! And so today I’m going to rank all of the major battles in Star Wars. Enjoy!

 The Utapau Battle

Utapau was one of my favorite locations in the prequels because of its originality and the battle there was enjoyable. It, unfortunately wasn’t that large of a battle and it focused mainly on Obi-Wan and General Grievous fighting rather than the surrounding action and so because of that this is my least favorite.

The First Death Star Battle

Oh my goodness, this battle is so boring. When I watch the rebels trying to destroy the Death Star I can tell the movie was made in 1977. The action is slow, if you’re sleepy and watching this part it’s nearly impossible to stay awake, and it takes forever to get to the good part which is when Luke takes his turn at the trench run. I love A New Hope because without it I wouldn’t be here today talking about my favorite battles in Star Wars but it’s still, unfortunately, a very lackluster action sequence.

The Crait Battle

I hate to say it, but this battle was much lamer than I thought it would be. In the teasers, trailers, and tv spots it looked like this was going to be one of the best battles ever to be in Star Wars. And then I watched it and nothing like I imagined happened at all.

When I saw these new First Order gorilla walkers I was so excited. This battle supposedly screamed epic. And then I watched the movie and the Resistance ski speeders couldn’t even shoot! The Resistance were just bouncing around in the ragged vehicles trying to dodge tie fighters. That’s underwhelming. And yes, there was some incredible Millenium Falcon action but overall it wasn’t a battle. It was, instead, a suicide mission that didn’t help the Resistance in the slightest and only helped show us once again how incredibly powerful the First Order is which isn’t exactly a bad thing. I just thought it was going to be the Hoth battle on steroids.

Marvel vs. DC: Whose Outfits Are Better?

Marvel Studios and the DC Extended Universe have taken the superhero world by storm with their incredible films that have generated billions upon billions of dollars and while the superheroes that have helmed these films are usually really enjoyable and easy to get behind sometimes their incredible outfits help make them that much cooler. And so, because the DC Universe has only six major superheroes in their roster so far I’m going to compare their suits with six of Marvel’s best outfitted heroes. Enjoy!

Superman vs. Doctor Strange

Superman’s outfit is basically the classic design but what makes this suit stand out are the metallic accents to the waist area. It makes the suit look alien and it provides a slightly epic feel to the overall outfit. Now I’ve never been a huge fan of Superman because of his suit; the red cape just never appealed to me, but I will admit that Henry Cavill wears it well and makes it not look as corny as it used to.

Doctor Strange’s outfit is also highly inspired by the original design from the comics and that’s why it’s perfect. The high collared red cloak provides an impeccable sorcerer sort of look and the dark blue robes and several belts also make him look different in a very good way. There is no doubt who I think wins this round.

When Is The Teaser for ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Going To Come Out?

It’s January 9. That means it’s only a few weeks ahead of four months before this movie comes out and there’s still no word or even inkling of a teaser coming out for Solo: A Star Wars Story and I have to admit, I’m getting nervous.

I was already skeptical when it was announced that they were going to make a young Han Solo film because why would we want that? Han Solo had just been killed off in The Force Awakens and the thought of a film featuring a young Han Solo without Harrison Ford playing the iconic role seemed daunting to say the least. But after Rogue One I grew a confidence for LucasFilm’s decisions, for even after countless last minute reshoots Rogue One ended up becoming one of my favorite Star Wars films.

And then last year the directors of Solo were fired and my worries about the film were stirred up again. But then I figured the decision LucasFilm made to fire those directors was a good thing and it was going to move this movie in the right direction.

Fast forward five months and it truly feels as if this movie isn’t even coming out this summer, that’s how much publicity they’re not giving to this film. And I know they had to focus on The Last Jedi and not distract from the highly anticipated sequel by bringing out a teaser for Solo but the movie is going to be here before we know it so where is at least a tiny sneak peek of this movie? There is, however, this promo image that came out a few days ago.

It’s Time To Start Getting Hyped for ‘Black Panther’

Marvel Studio’s latest two installments have been complete successes with Spider-Man’s debut film becoming one of my favorite Marvel films to date and Thor’s third movie, which was wildly different from its predecessors, being one of the funniest Marvel films that has been made so far. So, continuing on that winning trend, Marvel Studios is taking one of their newest heroes, Black Panther, and bringing his story to the forefront with his own movie and I am ecstatic.

Last night during the National Football Championship (great job Alabama by the way, that was an awesome way to win a game) they brought out a special preview of the highly anticipated superhero flick and while it was basically a trailer with mostly already seen footage it was the announcement that it’s time to start getting your tickets for the film that got me excited.

Last year history was made as the DC Universe decided to finally break tradition and brought out their first female superhero film with Gal Gadot’s sensational Wonder Woman. It tore down boundaries as it broke records for becoming the highest-grossing film led by a female director and it helped give the DC Universe the jolt of life it needed as it became critically acclaimed around the world.

Now Marvel has come to make history of their own with a film featuring a black superhero and a majority black cast, black writers, and an incredible African-American director in Ryan Coogler. It’s absolutely incredible and it truly is a historic moment.

The great thing is that’s not the only reason why I’m excited to see this film. Black Panther already became one of my favorite new superheroes after he made his debut in Captain America: Civil War and now that we get to see his beautiful world of Wakanda and follow his continuing journey I’m just excited to see this movie.

This looks like it’s going to be one of the most action-packed Marvel films to date and I know I’m going to enjoy this movie to the highest extant because Marvel has the perfect formula with their films and I know Black Panther is not going to be an exception.

The only problem that this movie might possess is its villains.

Marvel’s only consistent problem are their villains. From the very first Iron Man to its latest installment, Thor: Ragnarok, there has been a lack of complex, truly frightening villains throughout its seventeen films and the trend of one-note villains is starting to get old.

Now I’m pretty sure the illegal weapons dealer, Klaw, won’t be a very impressive villain but I’m hoping Erik Killmonger will be the incredible antagonist this movie deserves and won’t end up becoming another Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Whatever the case, it’s a little over a month until this film comes out and I’m ready to see this film because once this comes out the next stop on the Marvel train is Avengers: Infinity War and I. Can’t. Wait!

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a magical day.

I. Love. MOVIES!
