I Can’t Wait Until This Weekend of Fantastic Tennis

The Australian Open this year has been full of wonderful surprises. From Djokovic losing in the second round to #1 Kerber getting beat by an uprising American player named Coco Vanderway. Now the men’s and women’s finals are set and I am so excited to watch them.

The Women’s Finals

Serena Williams is unsurprisingly in the finals once again. Her opponent however is what makes this championship special. Venus Williams, after seven years, is finally back at a finals and I am so happy. She managed to endure several rounds to get to this point. When she faced Coco Vanderway in the semifinals and lost the first set in a brutal tiebreaker I didn’t think she was going to win. She bounced back and eventually won. Now she’s back in the finals which is so great. The amazing thing is she hasn’t won a final since 2003 which was ages ago. If she could somehow beat Serena it would be an incredible occasion.

Serena on the other hand is looking to beat Stephy Graff’s record of major titles by getting her twenty third win. If she did she would, definitively, be the best female tennis player of all time. The great thing about this finals is I don’t care who wins. If Venus won it would be special and if Serena won it would be historical. The game will be coming on at 3am tomorrow morning but I am determined to be up to watch this match.

The Men’s Finals

This match is just as special as the women’s. Instead of Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic being in the finals as expected Roger Federer is there along with Rafael Nadal, two players who are heading towards retirement. A win for both of them after constantly not being able to get past the quarter or semifinals would be fantastic. I’m pulling for Federer because he’s the oldest of the two and he’s worked so hard to win another major. Unfortunately he’s going against a formidable opponent who, out of their eight encounters in the finals, has beaten him six times. And the only majors Federer has won against Nadal is Wimbledon. Maybe this is Federer’s lucky year and he’ll finally be able to beat Nadal on a hard court. This game is also at three on Sunday morning and I can’t wait.

My Top Ten Marvel Superheroes

Marvel has been spitting out great blockbusters for the last nine years. With those great films come an awesome array of amazing superheroes. After last year’s introduction to three new heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a.k.a MCU my excitement to see more newcomers appear in later films has grown. Until that time these are my ten favorite Marvel superheroes.

10. Spider-Man

538cd3628a05e Spider-Man is awesome and with Tom Holland’s latest version of the iconic character this web slinging hero has become that much more enjoyable. I, however, am not a super fan of Spider-Man. Yes he is funny, his abilities are great, and seeing him alongside characters like Iron Man is goosebump inducing but I happen to like nine other superheroes more than him. I am still very excited for Spider-Man: Homecoming this July. I hope it’s good.

9. Ant-Man

54ad72b6084a0 When Ant-Man was coming out in 2015 I didn’t know if I was going to like this new superhero. The name Ant-Man sounded silly and didn’t make me overly excited. After watching the movie I was impressed with Ant-Man’s abilities but he still wasn’t Iron Man or Captain America caliber…until Captain America: Civil War. When he turned from Ant-Man into Giant-Man I about lost it. It was totally unexpected and definitely one of the highlights of the entire film. His role in Civil War might’ve been limited but after that jaw dropping moment he has deservedly risen in the ranks of cool superheroes.

8. Falcon

537baa87dbe40

Falcon was an awesome addition to the MCU. When Sam Wilson showed up in Captain America: The Winter Soldier I had no idea that he was going to become a superhero, let alone an Avenger. When he fought Ant-Man it was cool because his suit was different and better. His abilities in Civil War however were amazing. I loved his wings which could turn into a shield. How awesome is that! I also loved his drone, Red Wing. That was another nice addition to his character. Even though he still would’ve been my eighth favorite superhero without these great new abilities it definitely cemented him in the eighth spot.

7. Vision

537bc95e556b4

Vision is awesome. He is so ridiculously powerful he can pick up Thor’s hammer! Wow. Unfortunately he’s still trying to discover the depth of the power he wields from that destructive mind stone lodged in his forehead so he basically doesn’t do anything except pass through solid objects, shoot yellow lasers, and fly. I mean during the airport fight in Civil War he barely did anything. He was basically the referee of the dispute. He was there to make sure things didn’t get out of hand. That shows how cool he is because he doesn’t even have to have the best abilities in the world and he’s my seventh favorite superhero. I hope he’ll unlock a little more of his potential and do something really cool before he (and hopefully this doesn’t happen) comes to his demise at the hands of Thanos.

6. Scarlet Witch

537bc2375dfb9

Scarlet Witch is pretty cool. After Avengers: Age of Ultron I was excited to see a new female superhero join the Avengers ranks. Then I was even more excited that she would be in Civil War. She was great too. I loved that they displayed more of her abilities. It’s also really cool because she’s so powerful she can beat Vision which is extraordinary. I can’t wait to see what she’ll be up to in the next Avengers.

5. Black Widow

537ba41563b66

Black Widow is awesome. When she first showed up in Iron Man 2 I didn’t like her that much. Then after the first Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier I was still wasn’t that impressed. She was, at the time, only a little cooler than Hawkeye. After Age of Ultron they finally started to reveal her background a little more and I was able to truly understand who she was. Then in Civil War you can really see how she’s become such a leader in the Avengers. She’s no longer the only female Avenger whose abilities are kind of boring and whose story is so-so. She is actually one of the toughest superheroes because she’s not like Captain America who has been scientifically enhanced. And she doesn’t have very impressive abilities like being able to shoot lasers or summon lightning. She only has her athletic skills, electric bracers, and her tiny black sticks to use and she can literally fight Ant-Man. That’s pretty awesome. I can’t wait to see her again in the next Avengers and I really hope that she gets her own movie soon. She deserves it.

4. Iron Man

55b6a28ef24fa.jpg

If you would’ve told me five years ago Iron Man would end up being my fourth favorite superhero I would’ve laughed. Iron Man is great but he has, surprisingly, diminished in awesomeness. While there were old characters getting cooler and great new characters appearing Iron Man has stayed the same since the very first Iron Man. Tony Stark has changed in the last nine years because he has faced a whole bunch of difficult challenges. Unfortunately as the list of Avengers grows larger Iron Man’s spot in the top drops further.

3. Captain America

537ba5b368b7d

I was first introduced to Captain America in the first Avengers which was not a great introduction. He was overly stern, didn’t fit in well with the team, and his outfit was horrendous. I didn’t like Captain America very much. In fact he was my least favorite Avenger. After The Winter Soldier my view of Steve Rogers was changed forever. He was actually a great leader and the most impressive thing about him is all he has is a shield and his scientifically enhanced endurance and strength. That’s why he rose to top three in the list. After the conflict he faced with Iron Man I can’t wait to see him in Avengers: Infinity War. Will he still be Captain America or will he be something different? I’ll have to wait and see.

2. Black Panther

537ba26276348

Black Panther is ridiculously cool. I had no knowledge of Black Panther until last year and I was so surprised. When I saw him on the trailers and commercials for Civil War I knew he was going to be awesome but he was even better than I expected. I still get excited every time I watch Civil War when he first attacks Bucky and he unfurls those deadly claws. That is an awesome part. He’s so cool that I can’t wait to see his standalone movie next year. I’m so excited to see his homeland of Wakanda and the people of that secluded country.

1. Doctor Strange

537ba85979532

I had no idea that after November 4th Doctor Strange would be my favorite superhero but he is. His powers are so amazing that I was stunned. I also loved that even though he could make mirror dimensions and could rewind time he still has his basic weapons like the fire lasso he used to fight those sorcerers. And not only is he cool but he has the best companion ever, the cloak. That cloak is so funny and great that it’s kind of a superhero of its own. Doctor Strange was so awesome that as I was watching the movie all I could think was how will he be with the Avengers? I mean can you imagine him floating in the air and while a great battle is happening around him with heroes like Captain America, Iron Man and The Hulk he’ll be up there making the world around him shift and bend in mind boggling ways. I’m so, so very happy that he’s going to be in Thor: Raganarok so I can get a taste of what him alongside The Avengers will be like. Until then I’ll enjoy watching him face off against Dormammu on Blu-Ray.

Well those are my ten favorite Marvel superheroes…for the moment. I can’t wait until May to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. Who knows. Maybe there’ll be another new hero from that movie who breaches my top ten list.

Why I Love My Local Indie Theater

unnamed

I love movie theaters because every single one is different. The AMC theater in Times Square is nothing like the theater in Disney World. Two theaters under the same franchise in the same town can be completely different. So when I went to my local indie theater for the first time to watch a beautiful documentary called The Eagle Huntress I was excited. What would a small theater that only plays indie films be like? I was pleasantly surprised. At the ticket counter unlike regular movie theaters there are special shirts specifically for the theater that you can buy. The popcorn bag sizes are cute and petite compared to the usual giant bags of popcorn. The soft drink sizes are also a lot more reasonable than a small soda you would get at AMC. There was local candy that I could get as well as the normal M&M’s.

The service was great; everyone was very friendly and helpful. That’s something you don’t experience in regular movie theaters. The theater only had three studios but they were very impressive. Two of the studios were large enough to fit about sixty people while the third studio that I went to could only hold about thirty people. The studios and the theater’s bathroom were very clean which is always nice.

As nice as this theater was I still love regular theaters because that’s where you can go see blockbusters in IMAX which is one of my favorite things to do. It’s refreshing to watch indie films though because they aren’t like blockbusters where something is exploding every twenty or so minutes. They instead are good movies that you really have to listen to which I love. If it wasn’t for my local indie theater I would’ve never known about Ahshopan’s great story in The Eagle Huntress. I can’t wait to go back to see another wonderful documentary or a movie that engages you in its quiet storytelling.

I will always love IMAX theaters for the wonderful memories they have given me all of these years but my local indie theater now has a special place in my heart.

My List of the Star Wars Movies from Worst to Best

There are now eight Star Wars movies to enjoy. All of them are better than the average movie but some do fall short of greatness. So on that note let me start the listing.

8. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

star-wars-attack-clones-ii-poster_53baa2e7-1

I love Star Wars. Ever since I was a baby Star Wars has filled my world with a magic unlike any other. Unfortunately this film is simply bad in terms of Star Wars standards. Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker is horrible. He comes across as a whiny brat whose struggling between his duty as a Jedi and his love for Padme. Padme goes from being the really cool queen of Naboo to a senator infatuated with a boy who she knew when he was nine years old (yuck.) Their scenes together, which are a large portion of the movie, completely ruin this film. The romance between them on Naboo is cringe worthy and the Tatooine sequence supposedly revealing the beginning of Anakin turning to the dark side falls short of anything meaningful. One of the worst scenes in the entire movie is when Anakin talks to Padme after his mother’s death. It’s supposed to be an intense scene but thanks to the terrible acting from Christensen it turns into a sort of joke.

Now the scenes with Obi-Wan are great. I love the cool Jedi library. His scenes on the amazing planet, Kamino and Geonosis are wonderful. His fight with Jango Fett, on Kamino and in the asteroid ring, are some of my favorite parts of this movie. Unfortunately this isn’t a movie only about him and that’s when the film drops considerably. One time when I watched this movie I skipped all of the Naboo scenes, which are the worst section of the film, and the movie was ten times better.

The last twenty or so minutes of the movie are okay. The arena part is decently entertaining, the large battle is alright, the lightsaber duel between Count Dooku, Obi-Wan, and Anakin is boring, the fight between Yoda and Dooku was supposed to be epic but fell very short (and that’s not a pun.) And I don’t even watch the final scene when Anakin and Padme get married because what’s the point. All in all, this is the worst Star Wars film.

7. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

star-wars-phantom-menace-i-poster_3c1ff9eb

I like The Phantom Menace. This movie introduced some really cool new characters to the Star Wars universe like Qui-Gon, who died, and Darth Maul, who was obviously resurrected in the cartoons. There are some good scenes like the pod race which I still enjoy to this day and the space battle. This film is number seven on my list however because it’s kind of boring, Anakin as a little boy is slightly annoying and Jar Jar Binks is the worst co-star of any of the Star Wars movies. Before the new Star Wars movies that have come out in the last two years Jar Jar didn’t annoy me that much. After seeing the great new characters that have been added to the Star Wars universe from The Force Awakens and Rogue One Jar Jar Binks is now barely watchable.

6.Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

star-wars-return-jedi-vi-poster_a10501d2

This might be a surprise that I put Return of the Jedi at #6 but it’s here for only one reason…the Ewoks. When I was younger I loved the Ewoks. They were these cool giant teddy bear aliens that lived on a beautiful forest moon. The last time I watched this movie the Endor scenes were so boring I struggled getting to the good scenes at the end. Now I love the scenes where Luke faces Emperor Palpatine and when he fights Darth Vader but the Endor sequence is too large a section of the movie.

5. Star Wars Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith

star-wars-revenge-sith-iii-poster_646108ce

This movie is enjoyable from the beginning to the end. Anakin is still annoying but he isn’t as bad as when he’s in The Attack of the Clones. Padme is a damsel in distress the entire movie but she’s not in the film too much so that’s good. The scenes with Obi-Wan are of course very enjoyable. Emperor Palpatine’s evil plan to wipe out the Jedi is still terrible to witness. And the duels between Obi-Wan and Anakin and Yoda and Palpatine is very entertaining. I love when Palpatine is throwing all of those pods at Yoda as they fight where the Senate has its hearings. That’s one of my favorite parts of the entire film. The best part of the movie to me is the last seven or so minutes. I love it when Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine are watching the Death Star being built, it’s cool seeing a glimpse at Alderaan which is a beautiful planet, and Obi-Wan giving Luke to Owen Lars and his wife before walking off at the end always gives me chills. This wasn’t the perfect way to end the prequel trilogy but it was much better than the other two prequels.

4. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

star-wars-new-hope-iv-poster_c217085b

A New Hope is a great film. I mean it’s literally the first Star Wars ever. There wouldn’t be all of these great Star Wars movies if it wasn’t for this one. As classic as this movie is it’s still quite boring. Now Rogue One helped make it interesting again but at the end of the day this movie still has the worst lightsaber duel and space battle out of all the films. And the remaining Star Wars movies are just better.

3. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

 avco_payoff_1-sht_v7_lg_32e68793

This is where things start getting very difficult. I really, really love The Force Awakens. It contains so many hints and clues to the next movie that I’m still discovering things, particularly from Rey’s vision. The new characters are great and I can’t wait to learn more about them in the next Star Wars film which finally has a name (hooray!) The action scenes are wonderful, the lightsaber duel between Kylo Ren and Rey is one of the best parts of the movie, and the end when Rey finds Luke is to me, the best ending of all the Star Wars films. Yet with all the positives this movie has to offer there comes one negative that I cannot ignore. The movie basically was A New Hope all over again. Now the movie had a few things that were different but if it wasn’t for the backbone of A New Hope helping this story along who knows what The Force Awakens would’ve been like. They did, however, make this movie better than the fourth Star Wars without a doubt but I wished it could’ve been a little more original. That’s why, as much as I love this movie, it’s third on the list.

2. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

star-wars-empire-strikes-back-v-poster_878f7fce

This was very, very tough. I love The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader is at his coolest in this film as he chokes people through screens and demands respect from everyone around him. Luke is being taught in the ways of a Jedi by Yoda himself who lives on the mysterious planet of Dagobah. Han and Leia are trying to avoid being captured by the Empire. We know how that turned out. All in all the story is very good. I love a movie that gets better and better as it progresses. By the time Luke gets his hand cut off by Darth Vader the film has already taken you on a rollercoaster ride that just doesn’t stop. And then after a brief conversation with an angry Luke Darth Vader says, “No, I am your father.” Drop the mike. That is one of the best lines in any movie ever. So after all this praise why is this movie at second place on my list? It’s because as great as this film is, and it is great, it’s just not at that the level these new Star Wars films are. If The Force Awakens wasn’t A New Hope revised it would be third on my list. So yes, The Empire Strikes Back is a wonderful movie but it’s not my favorite.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

rogueone_onesheeta_1000_309ed8f6

This was very difficult to decide. I love Rogue One, it was a great film, but was it really my favorite Star Wars movie? The more I thought about it I realized it was my favorite. This movie introduced some of the best new characters in the Star Wars universe, the action was superb, and the story was surprisingly great. Even though I knew how the movie was going to end I was still surprised at every turn. The last ten minutes were mind boggling. I mean when do you watch a film where everyone on the poster dies. That’s like watching an Avengers movie and all of the Avengers die. I also love it because this is one of those movies where you can keep seeing different things if you look in the background. That’s always fun. On top of that this film made A New Hope less boring which is a miracle. And last but not least, when a Star Wars movie has an awesome scene with Darth Vader like the one Rogue One had I can’t help but make this #1 on the list.

So this is my list of the Star Wars movies. Hopefully Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will end up being my new favorite Star Wars film. Until then I can’t wait until Rogue One comes out on Blu-Ray.

The Super Bowl Is Set

Both of the games yesterday were complete blowouts. The Atlanta Falcons annihilated the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots reigned supreme again. I had predicted that both of these games were going to be close. I was very wrong. In roughly two weeks these two dominant teams will face each other in the Super Bowl and I can only hope it’ll be a good game.

Who Will Win?

Maybe I’m blinded by their super impressive performance yesterday but I think the Falcons will be the Super Bowl champions. Yes the Patriots are very, very good but I believe the Falcons will win. Their offense is unstoppable. There are so many players they can utilize that defenses have no idea who Matt Ryan is throwing to. And no matter how good the Patriots’ defense might be they won’t be able to stop the Falcons. I am convinced of that. I hope this game won’t be a blowout.

Breaking News: The Title of Star Wars Episode VIII Is Finally Here

Yes! It’s finally official. The next Star Wars will be called The Last Jedi. I am so excited!!! The most exciting thing is the titles usually tell us exactly what the story is about. The Force Awakens was all about the force awakening in Rey. The force also truly awoke in Kylo Ren because now he’ll be getting completed in this next installment. So what is the title of this new Star Wars telling us? Is it simply telling us that this movie will be centered around Luke Skywalker or is it holding some deep secret that is yet to be seen? The reason why I’m saying this is because the Star Wars words are red instead of the usual friendly yellow. That means the tone of this next film is already different than The Force Awakens.

Now that the title is out that means the teaser is right around the corner and I can’t wait.

The Football Games Today

Last week had some fantastic games. The Green Bay Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys in the last nail biting, thirty-five seconds of the fourth quarter and the Pittsburgh Steelers just managed to escape going to overtime. Now today presents the last two playoff games before the Super Bowl and I am so excited.

The AFC Championship

As always the New England Patriots will be hosting the AFC championship. They will face the Pittsburgh Steelers tonight. The Patriots had a ridiculously easy schedule for the regular season. Their first playoff game was against the Texans who aren’t that great. Now they will finally face a very good team and I can’t wait.

I believe it’s going to be a close game. Both of these teams have good defenses, great quarterbacks, awesome receivers, but the Steelers have something the Patriots don’t have…a very good running back. Levion Bell is an astounding running back who I know will get over a hundred yards in this game. The Patriots are good, which is to be expected, but I don’t think they’ll be able to beat the Steelers. I predict the score will be 27-24 with Pittsburgh winning.

The NFC Championship

Of course this is the game I’m looking the most forward to. The Green Bay Packers will have to go against the Atlanta Falcons. I’m rooting for the Packers because after that awesome game last week it would be terrible if they had to go home. It would also be more exciting if the match-up in the Super Bowl was the Packers going against either the Steelers or the Patriots. I believe this game is going to come down to the wire. The Falcons’ offense is amazing and after last week’s performance they have become a real threat to win the entire Super Bowl. I think the neutralizer for the Falcons will be Aaron Rodgers. If he can evade their defense and put points on the board they have a serious chance of winning. I have no doubt this will be a shootout. The winner of this game will really come down to which team has the least amount of mistakes. I’m predicting the score will be 35-34 with the Packers winning.

I. Love. MOVIES!
