‘Eternals’ After a Second Viewing

A few months ago I watched Eternals and upon my first viewing, I thought it was a good movie. Nothing overly special but nowhere near the searing Rotten score it garnered by critics. Yesterday evening I rewatched it for the second time and I’ve got to say, I was a bit blown away.

Eternals is the type of movie that benefits greatly from a second viewing because so many things make more sense. Like Ikaris’ robotic behavior and his unwavering duty to Arishem, the nuances between the heroes and their conflict with Arishem’s grand design, and so much more. I found myself deeply invested in the story and I’ve got to admit, I got a bit emotional a couple of times.

Eternals is at its best when Chloe Zhao dives deep into the epicness of this story. At times, the humor that mainly Kingo brings feels a little forced or a bit out of place in the ultra-seriousness of the story but the humor is there to remind us it is, in fact, an MCU movie.

The action, when there is some, is more brutal than most installments in the franchise. I found myself wincing and quite worried during the Deviant attack in the Amazon. Zhao made sure to let us know at all times that the Deviants were predators and they viciously attack as such. It’s no surprise one of the Eternals died during that sequence.

Ranking the Eternals

Well, considering that I already wrote my spoiler-free review yesterday it’s time to rank the Eternals. This is going to be fun!

10. Sprite

Lia McHugh does a decent job bringing Sprite, this almost fairytale-like character who never ages, to life but unfortunately, I never found much love for her as a character. In fact, after a while, she started to kind of get on my nerves so…

9. Kingo

I thought Kingo was going to be one of my favorite characters but honestly, he wasn’t. He was definitely the primary source of comic relief in the film and I liked his “finger guns” but there was something about Kumail Nanjiani’s performance that came off a little forced. It was almost like even he couldn’t believe he was getting the chance to play a rad Bollywood star alien superhero and you could feel that in his portrayal of the character.

‘Eternals’ Is NOT the Worst MCU Film At All But It’s Not One of the Best Either

The word for the past two weeks is that Eternals is a long, dense, incomprehensible mess of a movie that is incredibly flat despite some astonishing visuals. However, that’s just not the case.

Eternals is long, yes. Is it dense? For sure. But it’s not incomprehensible nor is it bad as the critics say.

A few hours ago I watched Eternals and I found myself engaged in the story that seemed to move along at a relatively fine pace that was full of fascinating characters who were each given impactful stories. Basically, everyone’s going to have a different favorite character for a different reason.

Eternals - Rotten Tomatoes

I’ve got a lot of thoughts about this one because it practically was perfect for the film that it was and yes, Chloe Zhao did embrace the complexity of the Eternals and crafted a powerful story that explores humanity and why this world is such a special place. Unfortunately, Zhao is a certain type of artist and her stamp mostly works for this movie but at times you can totally tell she is out of her league with this one.

I’m Seeing ‘Eternals’ Today!

Well, folks, I’m seeing Eternals today and I’ve got to say, this is the first time since The Rise of Skywalker that I’ve been this pessimistic about going to see a film. I am one to create my own opinions on a film and not listen to the critics but I can’t help noticing the Rotten Tomatoes score getting lower and lower.

But the audience is beginning to speak and they are struck by the withering reviews the critics left behind. They are calling the film epic, dark, mature, profound, and all-around incredible. So maybe I’ll join their ranks and find the film very enjoyable. One thing’s for certain. I’ll be providing a verdict in a matter of hours. I hope I have good news.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.

The First Reactions for ‘Eternals’ Paint an Epic-but-Long New Installment in the MCU

Well, the first reactions for Eternals are in and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some are calling the film “epic” and “sweeping” while others are calling it “convoluted” and “10-ish minutes too long.” Unfortunately, out of all the miniature (mostly spoiler-free reviews I’ve seen) none of the critics are calling it Marvel Studios’ best film. Here are some of reactions to give you an idea of what to expect with the upcoming film.

As Tickets for ‘Eternals’ Go on Sale Here Are Three New Posters

I’m not one to get prematurely excited for a film that hasn’t even come out yet but I am beyond pumped for Marvel’s latest film, Eternals, which features one of the most diverse casts of any superhero flick and will most likely usher in a new Era of MCU movies.

Now it’s been announced that tickets are on sale and they’re going fast so make sure you check out your local theater to reserve your preferred seats before they’re gone. Along with that surprise announcement more posters for the film were released. Enjoy!

Sometimes movie posters can be disappointing but these posters (and every poster/magazine cover) that have been made for this movie are probably the best in the MCU. Absolutely outstanding.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.
