DC Comics or Marvel: What’s Your Favorite

Superhero movies have become all the craze in the last decade when Hollywood realized these films make a crapload of money. And superhero films make a whole lot of money because a larger demographic can watch it. Grandparents, parents, teenagers, children, every generation can find a reason to get into these movies at their own pace and enjoy the riveting spectacle.

Marvel Studios has had the most success at acquiring an audience willing to drag themselves off of the couch, step outside the house, get into their car or whatever form of transportation, and head to the theaters to see what’s going to happen in the next chapter of the franchise’s world-building.

But you can’t deny that DC Comics has tried to put their own stamp into the superhero conversation with films that have started a conversation of their own. Unfortunately, the conversations haven’t been overly positive.

But these franchises don’t just pertain to the last decade of superhero galore. We must think back to the Batman movies in the 80s and 90s’, the X-Men films in the 2000s, and The Dark Knight trilogy which spanned from 2005 to 2012.

Of these franchises that have given us so many superhero movies over the decades, which is your favorite?

Honestly, I am torn to pick a favorite. On one side, Marvel has managed to deliver powerful stories over the last decade with superheroes that I legitimately care about. And then on the other side with DC Comics its collection of heroes and villains are far more spectacular. Wonder Woman, Superman, Shazam, Aquaman, the only hero that seems like a regular human is Batman who, like Iron Man, uses his brain to create the ultimate superhero alias.

But definitely, at the end of the day, I’d have to pick Marvel. If DC Comics could find a way to give its lovable stories in the same way that Marvel Studios has taken care of its characters I’d probably pick DC Comics. Until then, Endgame is enough to convert me to the Marvel side of the spectrum.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a tremendous day.

DC Comics or Marvel: Which Franchise Is Your Favorite?

Superhero movies. They have become an expected delight to look forward to every year. And the two arbitrators behind this movement is DC Comics and Marvel. For decades these franchises have released films that have inspired generations of fans and brought joy to millions and they are continuing to do so. In just a little over a month, Captain Marvel will be hitting theaters and there will surely be plenty of individuals, including me, rolling into theaters to see it. And that’s why I wanted to make this the topic of this week’s segment of Who’s Your Favorite? Enjoy!

DC Comics

When I think of DC Comics the first superhero that comes to mind is Batman but before Michael Keaton made Batman cool in the late 1980s’ there was Christopher Reeves’ iconic portrayal of Superman. I’ve seen Superman maybe once or twice in my younger years and while I don’t remember the film very much I still can grasp in the recesses of my brain the magic of the movie. Specifically, the scene when Superman–to bring Lois Lane back to life–uses his incredible ability to turn back time by flying around the Earth multiple times. You could say my mind was blown!

Movie Review Flashback: What I Think About ‘The Lego Batman Movie’

Five years ago I watched The Lego Movie and I fell in love with the film instantly. It’s one of the few times I actually cried laughing while watching a movie in the movie theaters. When they announced Batman was getting his own Lego movie I was SO excited…and then I watched the film.

I’ll leave it at that. You’ll get a greater understanding of how I felt about the movie in this review I wrote back in February of 2017. I hope you enjoy. 🙂

The Lego Batman Movie

Will Arnett, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Adam Devine in The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

The Lego Movie was great because it was hilarious. I mean it was a very, very funny movie. From the comical song “Everything Is Awesome” to the Millennium Falcon showing up with Lando, C-3PO, and Chewbacca trying to find Naboo so they could go to a party. And yes, Batman was the funniest character in The Lego Movie with his grumpy personality and his “sweet” ninja moves. This is the thing though. While I watched The Lego Movie it never exactly felt like I was watching a children’s movie. Yes it was an animated movie and yes it was for children but even I, at the age of fifteen, could enjoy it. With The Lego Batman Movie, I couldn’t and let me explain why.

A Spoiler-Free Review of Wonder Woman

I have just recently watched the new Wonder Woman movie and I’m proud to say…it was awesome!!! Now as a young woman for years I have had to watch men be the heroes. Yeah, there were a few women around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but they weren’t the ones to save the day. They were just part of the team and would probably never get their own movie. That’s why Star Wars has been so much fun to watch. When the galaxy needed saving I had the pleasure watching Jyn and Rey kick butt, take care of themselves, and be important role models to everyone around the world. In the superhero world, there weren’t any super powerful women. And even though Wonder Woman appeared briefly in Batman vs. Superman she still was just a sidekick, a part of a team. Well, she isn’t anymore. She is now front and center and is the new hero of superhero movies throughout Marvel and DC Comics.

I have to say, I was a little skeptical. When I saw all of the raving reviews I was excited but not convinced. What if these reviewers were saying it was good but really it was actually kind of terrible? What if was good to some people but I wouldn’t like it? I’m so happy that wasn’t the case. From the very beginning, I was engaged.

Wonder Woman’s homeland of Themyscira was breathtakingly serene and gorgeous. The story was engaging. And the Amazonians were amazing. They were diverse, strong, beautiful women who were ready to fight and defend themselves at any moment. It was amazing looking around the fictional world and seeing only women. There weren’t any men anywhere! I was beaming inside.

Then Chris Pine’s character, Steve Trevor, showed up and everything took a turn for the worse (and I don’t mean that in a bad way.) There was an epic battle upon the beach of Themyscira full of butt-kicking women, bows and arrows, and horses. Did I say it was epic? After the action sequence, Diana began to follow her destiny and her story truly began.

There were many awe-inspiring moments. One, in fact, was when she had to face a battalion of soldiers and it was so incredible it nearly brought me to tears. The visuals of seeing a woman be that powerful and that heroic is something I have never seen before in a movie. She jumped into the fray against all odds, her male companions had to follow her advance, it truly was a beautiful sight. And the choreography was very impressive. It was so fluid and perfect that I just have to applause Patty Jenkins for the incredible job that she did. I can tell she really put her heart and soul into this movie.

I enjoyed the fact that there was actually humor in the film. DC has been getting a lot of backlash for having overly serious, dour movies. I was glad to see them incorporate humor without it feeling forced or worse, for the movie to actually not be funny.

Now the movie isn’t perfect. There were a lot of cliches and slightly predictable moments. One of my least favorite aspects of the movie was the romance between Diana Prince and Steve Trevor.

Yes, I understand they’re supposed to have a love story and I know every DC Comics movie has one but I just felt that it was a little forced. The relationship between her and Steve didn’t seem realistic, it slightly dampened the strength of Diana, and if felt kind of unnecessary at times. Take Rogue One, for example, Jyn and Cassian could’ve easily had a love story but there wasn’t one because it would’ve been unnecessary and would’ve felt forced. That’s why when they died at the end of the film it was actually sad because they had literally just realized they liked each other. When Steve and Diana’s relationship comes to a crossroads I didn’t really care. I had no empathy for the two and was actually very glad about how things turned out. And I am a very sappy person. I’m a fan of love stories so when you mess up one I definitely feel a little offended.

The message the movie sent, however, was very profound and very important to the world we live in now. After all of these terrorist attacks and just crazy things happening it’s nice to go watch a movie that refills you with the hope that there’s something good in this world. And what mother or father doesn’t want to take their daughter to an empowering movie about a powerful woman overcoming some of the greatest odds.

Now if you’re wondering whether it’s appropriate for your children it totally is. There is an awkward conversation about procreation between Diana and Steve, Chris Pine is nude at one point, and there is an intimate kissing scene but besides that, the movie is perfectly okay.

And I’m happy to say there is a plot twist in the movie. One thing I love is when I try to figure out how a movie is going to end and something entirely different happens.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable film that you should definitely take the time to see. Out of a 100, I’ll give it a 93. It’s only because there were some considerable flaws that just couldn’t be overshadowed by the epicness of Wonder Woman in action. It’s undoubtedly the best DC movie so far, without question. And it is the best DC film since The Dark Knight. I’m definitely going to get it on Digital HD when it’s available just to at least watch the action scene on the beach and Wonder Woman in action on loop.

Well, that’s my post. I hope when you watch it you’ll enjoy as much as I did. And to all women and girls, Girl Power!

My Excitement for Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is coming out this Friday and I am beyond excited. For the last nine years, Marvel has dominated the superhero genre with their incredible storyline that has now spanned fifteen movies. And to their credit, most of the movies are very enjoyable. DC, however, has only in the same amount of time made about five movies. That’s a big difference. And to top it off most of the movies received terrible reviews despite all of the money the movies made. Now I personally enjoyed Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman but they still weren’t up to the standards of Marvel’s nonstop blockbuster machine. Now 2017 has come and I have to admit I am more excited to watch Wonder Woman than two of the Marvel films coming out this year (Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man.)  Here are the reasons why.

DC Comics Have Epic Superheroes

is (22)

When you compare the epicness between the two comic superpowers DC Comics will always win. Yes, Marvel has the flashy Iron Man, the heroic Captain America, and the thunder-wielding god Thor but they could never compete with the likes of the shadowy Batman or the immensely powerful but good-natured Superman or the extremely awesome Wonder Woman. Now ever since I learned anything about Wonder Woman I was instantly hooked. She had those bullet-deflecting bracers and the golden lasso of truth. That’s all she needed to win me over. Now she has a sword and a shield and Wonder Woman has reached her most epic incarnation. Even though Batman vs. Superman was a little long and a tad bit annoying at times the best parts of the movie clearly involved Wonder Woman. From when she sparred with Bruce Wayne in a mental contest (she won of course) to when she fought Doomsday like a boss I was thoroughly impressed. On top of that, the actress they chose to be the new Wonder Woman is perfect. Because she is Israeli her accent makes her seem like she could really come from some fictional island of women warriors. And she’s a naturally beautiful woman who embodies the essence of everything Wonder Woman’s supposed to be. Yes, Marvel has great superheroes I have learned to love but DCs’ superheroes will always be more epic.

This Will Be The First Female Superhero Film In Over A Decade

wdwmn_tsr_beach_online_master_4000x2490_master-rev-1

In a time when Hollywood is trying to be more inclusive, this is the perfect time to have a female superhero get her own film. Black Widow has been part of the Marvel Universe for seven years now. She has proven to be an interesting character in the movies and has grown into one of the most easily recognized heroes in Marvel. And yet she still hasn’t been given her own film yet. In fact, there still won’t be a female superhero-based film for Marvel until 2019! Isn’t that ridiculous? I know they’re trying to get there but they definitely could’ve done something better than they have. DC, however, has not let the poor reviews sway them and decided to invest all of their hopes and efforts into this new Wonder Woman and I can tell. The more I see the commercials for the upcoming film the more excited I’m getting. All I can think when I see those action scenes is this movie is going to be awesome!!! I can’t wait.

And Did I Say It Looked Epic?

Part of the reason why a movie is so enjoyable is the cinematography. A movie can be good but if it looks terrible I won’t watch it for two minutes. Wonder Woman is already proving to be a beautiful movie that’s going to really pop in IMAX. The environments, the fighting sequences, oh I’m getting giddy just thinking about it. I haven’t been this excited for a movie since…The Force Awakens came out which is saying something. And I love that they had a female director be the creative vision behind this film because it only makes sense. Let’s see Wonder Woman through a woman’s eyes instead of a man’s. Let’s see her tell the story of the powerful superhero.

Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out earlier this month but they did so much advertising it literally made me not watch the film. I’ll just wait to see it on Google Play. On top of that it looked terrible and surely enough it wasn’t as good as the first one was. In July Spider-Man is coming out but after watching four trailers for it I’m also not that excited. It’s going to be a typical Spider-Man movie except Peter Parker is actually being played by someone who looks like a teenager, Iron Man is in it (which is really the only reason I’m excited about the movie,) and it’s a Marvel movie so I know it’s going to be enjoyable. It doesn’t, however, scream epic or the best Marvel movie ever made. It’s just going to be a decent superhero blockbuster that’ll make people laugh and make people happy.

Wonder Woman is going to be an epic movie and it’s going to give even the best Marvel movies a run for their money. In fact, it’ll probably be better than ninety percent of the Marvel films that have come out. That’s why I’m excited to see this movie.

Well, that’s my post. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading it on this fine day wherever you are in the world. And if you’re a woman or girl and is just as excited as me to watch this film I say to you Girl Power!
