I have just recently watched the new Wonder Woman movie and I’m proud to say…it was awesome!!! Now as a young woman for years I have had to watch men be the heroes. Yeah, there were a few women around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but they weren’t the ones to save the day. They were just part of the team and would probably never get their own movie. That’s why Star Wars has been so much fun to watch. When the galaxy needed saving I had the pleasure watching Jyn and Rey kick butt, take care of themselves, and be important role models to everyone around the world. In the superhero world, there weren’t any super powerful women. And even though Wonder Woman appeared briefly in Batman vs. Superman she still was just a sidekick, a part of a team. Well, she isn’t anymore. She is now front and center and is the new hero of superhero movies throughout Marvel and DC Comics.
I have to say, I was a little skeptical. When I saw all of the raving reviews I was excited but not convinced. What if these reviewers were saying it was good but really it was actually kind of terrible? What if was good to some people but I wouldn’t like it? I’m so happy that wasn’t the case. From the very beginning, I was engaged.
Wonder Woman’s homeland of Themyscira was breathtakingly serene and gorgeous. The story was engaging. And the Amazonians were amazing. They were diverse, strong, beautiful women who were ready to fight and defend themselves at any moment. It was amazing looking around the fictional world and seeing only women. There weren’t any men anywhere! I was beaming inside.
Then Chris Pine’s character, Steve Trevor, showed up and everything took a turn for the worse (and I don’t mean that in a bad way.) There was an epic battle upon the beach of Themyscira full of butt-kicking women, bows and arrows, and horses. Did I say it was epic? After the action sequence, Diana began to follow her destiny and her story truly began.

There were many awe-inspiring moments. One, in fact, was when she had to face a battalion of soldiers and it was so incredible it nearly brought me to tears. The visuals of seeing a woman be that powerful and that heroic is something I have never seen before in a movie. She jumped into the fray against all odds, her male companions had to follow her advance, it truly was a beautiful sight. And the choreography was very impressive. It was so fluid and perfect that I just have to applause Patty Jenkins for the incredible job that she did. I can tell she really put her heart and soul into this movie.
I enjoyed the fact that there was actually humor in the film. DC has been getting a lot of backlash for having overly serious, dour movies. I was glad to see them incorporate humor without it feeling forced or worse, for the movie to actually not be funny.
Now the movie isn’t perfect. There were a lot of cliches and slightly predictable moments. One of my least favorite aspects of the movie was the romance between Diana Prince and Steve Trevor.

Yes, I understand they’re supposed to have a love story and I know every DC Comics movie has one but I just felt that it was a little forced. The relationship between her and Steve didn’t seem realistic, it slightly dampened the strength of Diana, and if felt kind of unnecessary at times. Take Rogue One, for example, Jyn and Cassian could’ve easily had a love story but there wasn’t one because it would’ve been unnecessary and would’ve felt forced. That’s why when they died at the end of the film it was actually sad because they had literally just realized they liked each other. When Steve and Diana’s relationship comes to a crossroads I didn’t really care. I had no empathy for the two and was actually very glad about how things turned out. And I am a very sappy person. I’m a fan of love stories so when you mess up one I definitely feel a little offended.
The message the movie sent, however, was very profound and very important to the world we live in now. After all of these terrorist attacks and just crazy things happening it’s nice to go watch a movie that refills you with the hope that there’s something good in this world. And what mother or father doesn’t want to take their daughter to an empowering movie about a powerful woman overcoming some of the greatest odds.
Now if you’re wondering whether it’s appropriate for your children it totally is. There is an awkward conversation about procreation between Diana and Steve, Chris Pine is nude at one point, and there is an intimate kissing scene but besides that, the movie is perfectly okay.
And I’m happy to say there is a plot twist in the movie. One thing I love is when I try to figure out how a movie is going to end and something entirely different happens.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable film that you should definitely take the time to see. Out of a 100, I’ll give it a 93. It’s only because there were some considerable flaws that just couldn’t be overshadowed by the epicness of Wonder Woman in action. It’s undoubtedly the best DC movie so far, without question. And it is the best DC film since The Dark Knight. I’m definitely going to get it on Digital HD when it’s available just to at least watch the action scene on the beach and Wonder Woman in action on loop.
Well, that’s my post. I hope when you watch it you’ll enjoy as much as I did. And to all women and girls, Girl Power!
