‘Ambulance’ Is the Thrill Ride I Wasn’t Expecting!

The last time I watched a Michael Bay movie in theaters it was Transformers: Age of Extinction and despite the film’s Razzie nominations and its abysmal 16% Rotten Tomatoes score I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I liked so much I own it to watch at home. In fact, I just watched it the other day.

However, Transformers: The Last Knight was terrible. It was an absolute mess of a movie that I felt no connection to or love for, despite trying to watch it about four times. Then, at the end of 2021, I saw the trailer for Ambulance and I just knew in my heart it was going to be a good movie.

I’ve seen quite a few Jake Gyllenhaal movies and they have always been good films, except for Prince of Persia but that’s a whole other story. When I saw that he was starring in a Michael Bay film I figured this film would be pretty good. Sure enough, I was right.

Ambulance is Michael Bay’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes at 67%. It makes sense too because this movie is surprisingly fantastic. It’s an action-packed thrill ride of a film with so many twists and turns…literally. But the best thing about this movie wasn’t just the action scenes which were amped up from the get-go but the emotional center of the film, Yahya’s Will and his adopted brother, Gyllenhaal’s Danny.

If you had told me this movie was going to make a cry a little I would’ve laughed but yeah, I did. Michael Bay really gets you connected to the characters in this story in a way that most of his films don’t. It is their brotherhood that makes this movie worth remembering.

All in all, if you can, try to get to your local theater and watch this (preferably in IMAX) because it is a legitimately entertaining film. I’ll give it 4.5 out of 5 stars and 95 out of 100.

I thankyou for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.

Movie Review Flashback: ‘Okja’: Bong-Joon Ho Does It Again!

Before yesterday I had seen two Bong-Joon Ho movies (Parasite and Snowpiercer) both of which were really amazing and well-written. So yesterday I watched another film of his; the critically-acclaimed Netflix film Okja.

Okja is not a typical movie. It’s the story of a young Korean girl and her genetically mutated pig. I’ll leave the details of the film there because the story is so good and full of twists and turns that I’d like to keep a lot of the film under wraps in case you may want to watch it yourself.

What I will mention about the movie is its stellar cast. I’m talking Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, and Giancarlo Esposito. I have not seen a bad movie with these four actors (well, I saw one bad movie with Gyllenhaal, Prince of Persia) and once again Okja was amazing.

Bong-Joon Ho is the type of filmmaker that I would want to be if I decided to make movies because he just doesn’t care. He writes and directs the movies he wants to make and each of his films seem to have a resounding message against society and taking a retrospective look at our worst selves.

I am so happy he finally won an Oscar because this man is too brilliant not to have had one already and Okja is just another proof of that.

This movie made me laugh, it made me gasp, and yes, it made me cry. Okja can be light and airy but it can also be very, very dark. If you’re not into movies with darker subject material this movie may not be for you because it can get really upsetting after a while.

I’m giving Okja 100 out of 100 and 5 out of 5 stars. It was a freaking perfect film!

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.

Movie Review Flashback: ‘Prisoners’ Is a Creepy, Riveting Thriller

I love a good mystery and The Silence of the Lambs is the best one conceived on the big screen with Anthony Hopkins’ unforgettably iconic Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster’s perfect written heroine, Clarice Starling starring alongside one another in a thriller worth watching.

While trying to find something to watch on HBO Max I ran into Prisoners, a haunting thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal that came out in 2013. It sits at #200 on IMDb’s Top 250 movies and learning this I had to check it out. Here’s the synopsis.

When Keller Dover’s daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. Continue reading Movie Review Flashback: ‘Prisoners’ Is a Creepy, Riveting Thriller

‘Zodiac’: Another Creepy Thriller

I love a good mystery thriller. Movies like The Silence of the Lambs and Prisoners are films that get my heart racing, my eyes widening, and leaves me riveted! So of course, being the thriller lover that I am, I decided to watch Zodiac; a movie that features the real life crime story of a serial killer from the late 60s’ through 70s’ by the name of Zodiac who was terrorizing California.

Starring in the film were three Marvel alums; Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and its lead actor, Jake Gyllenhaal. They each injected a sense of life into the movie but it was Gyllenhaal who stole the show, his frantic youthful obsession with discovering the identity of the serial killer driving the story forward.

I really enjoyed the movie. It felt like a cross between Spotlight and Prisoners and its last twenty-thirty minutes were uber frightening. I found myself actually peeking through the fingers a few times because it was that scary.

Is this the best movie I’ve ever seen, no, but it was enjoyable.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day.

My Review of ‘Nightcrawler’

I’ve been hearing about this Nightcrawler movie for quite a while now. After watching Prisoners, which was another film that starred Jake Gyllenhaal, I found myself really intrigued to watch this movie. My impression, due to the film’s poster, was that Gyllenhaal’s character was some creepy guy who goes around killing people. I was way off.

Instead he is what is called a “Nightcrawler”; an individual who goes to crime scenes and films those scenes before selling the gruesome footage to news channels for a good sum of cash. And that’s all the movie was about.

A young psychopath who transitions from being an unemployed thief who will kill you if you happen to have a nice watch to becoming a nightcrawler entrepreneur.

I have now seen Gyllenhaal in four different roles.
