The last time I watched a Michael Bay movie in theaters it was Transformers: Age of Extinction and despite the film’s Razzie nominations and its abysmal 16% Rotten Tomatoes score I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I liked so much I own it to watch at home. In fact, I just watched it the other day.
However, Transformers: The Last Knight was terrible. It was an absolute mess of a movie that I felt no connection to or love for, despite trying to watch it about four times. Then, at the end of 2021, I saw the trailer for Ambulance and I just knew in my heart it was going to be a good movie.
I’ve seen quite a few Jake Gyllenhaal movies and they have always been good films, except for Prince of Persia but that’s a whole other story. When I saw that he was starring in a Michael Bay film I figured this film would be pretty good. Sure enough, I was right.
Ambulance is Michael Bay’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes at 67%. It makes sense too because this movie is surprisingly fantastic. It’s an action-packed thrill ride of a film with so many twists and turns…literally. But the best thing about this movie wasn’t just the action scenes which were amped up from the get-go but the emotional center of the film, Yahya’s Will and his adopted brother, Gyllenhaal’s Danny.
If you had told me this movie was going to make a cry a little I would’ve laughed but yeah, I did. Michael Bay really gets you connected to the characters in this story in a way that most of his films don’t. It is their brotherhood that makes this movie worth remembering.
All in all, if you can, try to get to your local theater and watch this (preferably in IMAX) because it is a legitimately entertaining film. I’ll give it 4.5 out of 5 stars and 95 out of 100.
