‘Star Wars’ Gets Its First Proper Love Story Since The Original Trilogy

When one thinks of Star Wars love stories don’t immediately come to mind but in fact Star Wars has one of my favorite movie love stories of all time, the romantic relationship of Han and Leia. Their love story transcended generations and was resolved in a heartbreaking but realistic way in The Force Awakens. There hasn’t been a Star Wars romance as passionate and worth caring about since them and that’s been a shame considering how great of a love story theirs really was.

The prequel trilogy was mainly created around the entire idea of Anakin and Padme’s secret love story and its lead up to Darth Vader’s eventual emergence but it was a TERRIBLE love story with corny conversations about sand and aggressive negotiations. Ugh. And then the latest three Star Wars movies haven’t spouted any concrete romances between any of the major characters except random moments like the infamously romantic hand touch between Kylo Ren and Rey or the awkward kiss between Finn and Rose on Crait. Besides that there hasn’t been any love stories. Just subtle or sometimes blatant hints to possible romantic relationships that could occur.

So I went into Solo knowing that Han and Qi’Ra had a romantic relationship but I figured it was going to follow the trend of its three predecessors by keeping the romantic aspect a little low-key. The movie isn’t on for five minutes before that theory is thrown out of the window as the film quickly establishes that Han and old flame, Qi’Ra, are definitely in love. And as the movie goes on it becomes more and more apparent on how strong that relationship truly is between the two characters.

Solo, on the surface seems to be an action/adventure flick but in essence it’s truthfully a film dabbling deeper in the romantic genre more than anything as it follows Han’s life and his quest to give himself, and Qi’Ra, a better life in the galaxy. If you’re someone who is a fan of love stories then this Star Wars film is definitely one to watch because it definitely has plenty of passionate smooching and leering gazes to satisfy anybody who’s been begging for romance in this new era of Star Wars.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! I’m about to start talking about some serious spoilers so I highly advise you to discontinue reading this now, if you haven’t watched this movie yet.

The Fierce Women of ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Solo might’ve been the first Star Wars movie under Disney to focus on a male lead but that didn’t mean there weren’t any fantastic women that helped elevate the movie with their special and specific roles. None of these women were treated as damsels in distress and that was a spectacular realization as I watched the film. So, in celebration of more incredible heroines joining the Star Wars universe, I’m writing this post displaying their various awesomeness.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! If you haven’t seen Solo and you would like to avoid spoilers then I advise you to discontinue reading this now. Thank you for heeding this warning and enjoy. 🙂

Val

When I saw Val in the first teaser for Solo I was super excited to see her in the movie and when she showed up she was definitely rather awesome. She was a tough, no-nonsense type of gal and those are always the coolest heroines. And she was a woman of color! Um…that’s awesome. Unfortunately we met her at the end of her road as she sacrificed herself during the Conveyex heist which was kind of shocking. I thought she was going to be around for a long while but she didn’t survive through the first thirty minutes of the movie and while that is a shame her involvement in the film was 100% superb. Maybe we’ll learn a little bit more about her in future books, cartoon, or the Forces of Destiny shorts.

L3-37

L3-37

Oh man, I loved L3-37. Her mission on liberating droids from their owners was not only hilarious but heroic at the same time and it kind of made me think of droids in a different light. I also loved how expressive her personality was despite the fact that she was clearly a droid. She was yet another character in Solo that I would’ve loved to see stick around for a little longer but the fact that she became one with the Falcon‘s interface is very special indeed. I’m a total L3-37 fan now. 🙂

Qi’Ra, the Mysterious Femme Fatale

Qi’Ra is one of the characters I’m most excited for in Solo: A Star Wars Story because she is still such a mystery. She’s one of the most prominent characters in the movie and yet I still feel like I don’t know anything about her except her name…which is awesome. That means that her role in the film is being kept secret for a reason and that’s always encouraging. But what I do know about her is that she isn’t just a pretty face.

She has style, she has grace, but there’s also this subtle hint of deadliness about her as well. She’s just as much of a scoundrel as Han Solo and I think we’re going to discover that at times in this movie.

In Star Wars we’ve never really been introduced to a major female character like this before. There was Leia, the strong-willed princess, Padme, the authoritative Queen/Senator of Naboo, Rey, the powerful but benevolent Jedi, and Jyn Erso, the tenacious rebel who wasn’t going to allow the Empire dictate the future of the galaxy anymore. And now there’s Qi’Ra who I can’t decipher if she’s a hero or one of the characters in this movie that’s going to turn Han into the person who would rather be, well, Solo (with the exception of his best friend, Chewbacca).

But that’s super exciting though. You can’t make a franchise worth watching if all of the characters are practically the same. Thankfully I only have a few days to see just exactly what type of new leading lady she will be.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day. May the Force be with you.

How Women Have Become the New Forces of ‘Star Wars’

I have loved Star Wars since I was a little girl during the days when the only woman I could look up to in a Star Wars film was Queen/Senator Padme Amidala, a woman who was reduced from being a no-nonsense leader to a sappy, damsel-in-distress who was utilized into the films only to further Anakin’s fall to the dark side. When I finally saw the original trilogy it was like a breath of fresh air meeting Princess Leia’s fiery, strong-willed character that didn’t even let intimidating villains such as Darth Vader make her bat an eye. But I was still in a dilemma. Here were these six films that had countless major male characters and only one main woman in each trilogy. It was such a bad disparity that in the Family Guy special of Return of the Jedi they joked that the only women in the galaxy was Leia and Mon Mothma.

Disney has since fixed that problem by adding more and more strong female characters of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities in their various films, tv shows, and games. So today I’m going to share the list of all of the incredible women that have become the new forces driving this incredible franchise forward for a new generation of Star Wars fans. Enjoy!

Rey

reyjakku.jpg

When Disney created this new trilogy that would kickstart a brand new dawn for Star Wars they could’ve easily placed a man at the helm like the two previous trilogies but they decided to go a different route and make Rey the new face of Star Wars. The thought of a woman being the new Luke was the last thing in my mind so imagine my surprise when I watched The Force Awakens for the first time and I found out Rey was the one who was going to be destined to be the next new hope. I couldn’t have been happier! My jaw practically dropped when she Force pulled Luke’s lightsaber out of the ground, ignited it, and stood ready to fight Kylo Ren like a Jedi.

When the movie ended with her finding Luke Skywalker on that cliff and the film insinuating that the legendary master would be the one to train her to become a Jedi I was legitimately overwhelmed with happiness.

Since then she has only grown stronger with the Force and has cemented herself even further as the new hope of the galaxy because she is officially now the last Jedi. When we see her again in Episode IX her journey, I’m sure, will lead to a rather satisfying ending that’ll be worthy of her awesomeness. 🙂

This Is Definitely the Best Poster for ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ So Far

The marketing for Solo: A Star Wars Story has officially begun to ramp up and a few days ago they brought out a new poster for the film which actually is the greatest poster they’ve made so far. Here it is.

MV5BMDU1MGJjZTktZmEzOC00MmI3LTk2MjctYThlN2YyZDdjODNhXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzUwNDYxMzY@._V1_SY1000_SX700_AL_

So this is the international poster for the movie and I love the Rogue One vibe it’s giving as it’s stacking all of the characters in a hierarchy type of fashion and it’s kind of really cool. I also like the sunrise color scheme. It hints that the dawn of a new big shot in town is coming and that will obviously be Han Solo. Awesome! I also love seeing all of the characters as well. It’s obvious that the four most important characters will be Han, Qi’Ra, Chewbacca, and Lando, which is super exciting. I have to admit, this poster is getting me a little pumped for this movie.

I’ve also just recently gotten the main gist of the movie which is this; Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) is putting together a sort of Avengers of smugglers for a big-shot gangster, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) to perform a heist job that’ll obviously pay them a lot of money. That sounds ridiculously awesome because there’s never been a story like that in Star Wars before. Maybe this movie is going to be really good after all because that sounds like an awesome plot. And I’m sure this movie will be full of shocking-but-not-that-shocking betrayals that’ll reveal how Han truly became his namesake; Han Solo.

All in all, I’m actually starting to get excited for this movie. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a beautiful day. May the Force be with you.

The Characters I’m Most Excited To See in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’: In Increasing Order

Solo: A Star Wars Story will be coming out in nearly three months and after an exciting article from Entertainment Weekly last week featuring the movie my knowledge of these new, and old, characters has been broadened. So, today I’m going to share with you the character’s stories I’m most interested in seeing in Solo. Enjoy!

Val

Thandie Newton in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

In the Entertainment Weekly article I discovered what this character’s name is as well as her involvement in the film. She’s an accomplice of Beckett’s and that makes her super interesting. I know for a fact just from briefly seeing her in the trailer that she’s totally shady. She looks like she’ll backstab you so fast. Awesome! In Star Wars we’ve never fully been introduced to the criminal underworld and the shady inhabitants of its enterprise and, like Rogue One, it’s going to be fascinating seeing another side of Star Wars that hasn’t been shown before.

Tobias Beckett

Woody Harrelson and Alden Ehrenreich in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

When I heard that Woody Harrelson had been cast in the movie as Han’s mentor I already knew he was going to play a crooked character and after seeing him in the teaser he practically screams swindler. I don’t exactly know, of course, how he’s going to betray Han but I have a deep feeling in my gut that he is at some point in the movie. In my last post about Solo I wrote about how exciting it was not seeing who the villain of the film was but maybe I did. Maybe Beckett is the villain. The cool thing is I only have a couple of weeks from three months before I find out the truth.
