The New Complexity of the Marvel Villain

I remember Marvel Studios years ago. Every movie was fun and some films were better than others but one element of the universe that was always lacking was the movies’ villains; Whiplash, Red Skull, Yellow Jacket, Ego, Secretary Pierce, Ronan, Ultron, etc.

These villains were, in a word, lame. And then we got Zemo.

In an instant, the typical antagonist whose grand plan was world domination was flipped on its head. The writers tricked us into thinking that this was Zemo’s motivations as the story unfolds with a predetermined conclusion that Zemo was about to unleash a small but mighty army of scary Super Soldiers onto The Avengers, only for that narrative to be flipped on its head when we realize Zemo’s only goal was to see The Avengers destroy one another.

And what were his motivations? His family was killed in Sokovia.

Suddenly Zemo wasn’t the typical Marvel antagonist. He was a man whose yearning for The Avengers’ downfall spawned from a place we can all understand; grief. That’s why when we reunite with him in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier the writers didn’t exactly portray him as this evil guy but as a smart individual who just so happens to not like The Avengers.

Marvel Studios Is Building Their Rebuttal to ‘The Suicide Squad’

Marvel and DC Comics have been copying each other’s characters and stories for decades. DC Comics has Bumblebee, Marvel has Wasp. Marvel has Ant-Man, DC Comics has Atom. DC Comics has Aquaman, Marvel has Namor. Marvel has Thanos, DC Comics has Darkseid. DC Comics has Green Lantern, Marvel has Captain Marvel. You get the memo. If one company makes a character or a storyline that’s working the other company jumps on the bandwagon as soon as possible.

The DCEU beat Marvel Studios at the punch with Wonder Woman but then Marvel Studios would come back two years later with Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel would go on to make the most money of the two, earning over a billion dollars at the box office. Marvel Studios however made Black Panther and are now about to unleash Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings onto the world while the DCEU don’t seem anywhere close to making a solo film featuring a predominant POC cast featuring a POC hero.

The Suicide Squad First Reactions Are In - Den of Geek

Now there’s The Suicide Squad, a film essentially made twice featuring a band of bad guys having to save the world from a terrible threat. 2016’s Suicide Squad was a flop but it got people still wanting more from DC Comics’ band of evil (or misguided) misfits. In steps James Gunn to take the reins.

Now The Suicide Squad is being touted by critics as a “must-see” and “James Gunn’s best film.” That’s not a surprise considering that he’s the mind behind Guardians of the Galaxy which is still considered to be one of the best comic book movies of all time.

Considering that fans are liking the idea of bad guy-teams having to save the day, it looks like Marvel Studios is building their own villain-crew to take over the big screen in a few years and they’re called the Thunderbolts.

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Has a Beautiful New Poster

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is going to be a great show, the newest trailer for the series has shown as much, and this new poster is honestly one of my favorite in the MCU. Here it is.

Why is this poster making me so happy? Well, first off, Sam and Bucky look great. (I love Bucky’s Wakandan arm.) Zemo is back and he’s got his mask! I love that so much. Agent 13 is back and cooler than ever. But most importantly, we get our first major look at a new character, US Agent who, equipped with what appears to be Cap’s shield and decked out in black-and-red, is looking exactly what I would expect an evil Captain America to look like.

There’s going to be a lot to this series and it’s already been said that the show will deal with Sam’s reluctance to be the new Captain America. US Agent is going to fill that void and from what I’ve seen from leaks he’s going to be really interesting in the story.

I love WandaVision and I can’t wait for this week’s newest episode but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is old-fashioned Marvel and I can’t wait to absorb every second of it.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a tremendous day.

Sharon Carter and Helmut Zemo Are Reported To Appear in the ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Series

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame brought dozens of characters laced throughout the MCU back to the fold, even Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster! There were still some characters, however, that didn’t make the list and one of the most striking lack of appearances was Sharon Carter.

She was established in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War as a love interest for Steve Rogers. The last time we saw her she had defied the Sokovia Accords, giving Captain America and Falcon their suits back, before FINALLY getting a long-awaited kiss from Steve Rogers which, now that I’ve seen Endgame, seems even ickier considering that Steve would end up going back in time and being with Peggy for the duration of his life. I now think of that scene in the same way that I think of that one unforgettable moment when Leia and Luke kissed in The Empire Strikes Back. *shudder* Yikes.

What makes it even worse is that Sharon would not get invited to the massive Avengers party, leaving her storyline very much in the dust. But now it seems that she will finally get the role that she deserves as it’s being reported that she may join Falcon and Bucky in the Falcon and Winter Soldier series on Disney+.
