A Movie Ranking: Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy is no Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt nor is he even the likes of Channing Tatum or Jeremy Renner but he is one of Christopher Nolan’s favorite actors to work with and has utilized him in ways that have made him, as a Nolan fan, ultimately unforgettable. Today, I wanted to highlight him for this week’s A Movie Ranking. Enjoy!

5. The Dark Knight Rises

Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Matthew Modine, Anne Hathaway, Alon Aboutboul, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Daniel Sunjata in The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

In Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies Cillian Murphy plays Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow throughout the trilogy. In The Dark Knight Rises, he plays a small role as a judge under Bane’s cruel rule helping to prosecute Gotham’s righteous citizens. One of my favorite moments in the film is when he prosecutes one such Gothamite to exile instead of death but he exiles him by making him cross the treacherous frozen river. So, in actuality, he still charges him with death.

Fionn Whitehead in Dunkirk (2017)

Cillian Murphy’s role in Dunkirk is tantamount to the film’s quality as he plays the Shivering Soldier, a character who is suffering from serious anxiety and PTSD. Cillian Murphy is such a great actor and it is very apparent in this movie.

Batman Begins

Christian Bale and Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins (2005)

One of the reasons why Batman Begins was always a bit scary in my younger years is because of Scarecrow. I still remember watching this movie as a child and being totally freaked out when Scarecrow shows up with that mask covered in bugs due to the hallucinations people see when they see him.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Berenger, Michael Caine, Lukas Haas, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, and Dileep Rao in Inception (2010)

Inception is one of the best movies I’ve seen and Cillian Murphy plays such a great role in the film. Unlike the other Christopher Nolan movies where he plays one heck of a villain in this film we get to see him as a vulnerable young heir to a massive enterprise. It’s a different role of his and undoubtedly one of my favorite acting performances by him.

The Dark Knight

Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Heath Ledger, Sarah Jayne Dunn, Melinda McGraw, and Jennifer Knox in The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight is one of the greatest movies ever made, in my opinion. Cillian Murphy plays basically a cameo role in the film at the beginning of The Dark Knight and even though it’s small he still manages to have one of my favorite quotes in the film.

This has been a fun movie ranking.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day.

      1. It’s a little weird. He plays the main protagonist character in the movie, it goes from high sci-fi concept with kinda sketchy command of stellar physics to… well, I’ll leave that to you to see. Epic music though.
