Lately I’ve been very into Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse again since it started coming on FX and since I’ve seen it three times in the past two weeks or so I figured I might as well revisit this post which perfectly sums up my adoration of this movie which has now become my favorite animated film of all time! Enjoy.

The trick to Into the Spider-Verse isn’t the story, the story is actually rather basic, nor is it the music (which is pretty great by the way.) There’s something else to this film that has me going back for more and that is the absolutely stunning animation.

The movie melds at least a half dozen genres in one movie and it is mind-blowing. From being uncannily realistic looking at times to appearing like a strip right out of a comic book and even having the cartoony look of a Looney Tunes cartoon mixed with manga animation plus some truly psychedelic visuals can leave one’s brain scrambled in sheer awe.

One of the best sequences in the entire movie is undoubtedly the final battle sequence involving all of the Spider-people and Kingpin and his goon squad. The action scenes are phenomenally choreographed and edited, the animation is out of this world, the visuals are ridiculous and leave your eyeballs barely able to register just exactly everything’s that happening, and it’s just freaking amazing!

As I watched this sequence last night all I could keep saying to myself was, “WOW!”

But that’s not all.

Like Black Panther, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a movie surrounding the origin story of a black superhero and the story never strays from that fact. In fact, it embraces it. The film slowly sheds Miles’ self-doubt and by the film’s conclusion he emerges as the one and only Spider-Man, a fact that he would never have believed was possible.

It’s a beautiful message for children (and adults) to hear, for we can all be superheroes (figuratively) in our own lives as long as we have the guts to take that leap of faith. Miles Morales is all of us and this story evolves him from being a kid who doubts to a kid who believes and it is just so darn inspiring! Ugh. I get pumped every time I watch this movie.

The Incredibles was the childhood film I would watch over and over again…and it was great! If I was a child watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I think it would be my favorite film between the two movies. Don’t get me wrong, The Incredibles is AMAZING in a very different way but Into the Spider-Verse just…makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I love this movie.

Okay, okay, okay, I need to stop rambling. As you can probably tell this has become one of my favorite movies of all time. I love it, I love it, I love it and I cannot wait to see whatever shenanigans the writers and directors can concoct for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.
